How we make this list: we compare pricing pages, product documentation and public user reviews. Ratings come from G2, Capterra or Trustpilot, with the date we checked them.
Key takeaways
- Macrium Reflect is the imaging specialist reviewers trust most for restores that work at 2 a.m., on a subscription reported from 49.99 dollars per year for the home edition.
- EaseUS Todo Backup is PCWorld's overall pick for most users, at 39.95 dollars per year, with a perpetual licence at 59.99 dollars for buyers who refuse subscriptions.
- Acronis True Image at 49.99 dollars per year adds anti ransomware protection and optional cloud storage to imaging.
- AOMEI Backupper's free Standard edition covers most home needs; Professional is 39.95 dollars per year with a lifetime option around 69.95 dollars.
- Veeam Agent and Paragon's Community Edition are genuinely free imaging tools with enterprise and veteran DNA respectively. Windows' own backup remains too limited to be your only plan.

The best Windows backup software for most PCs
#1Macrium Reflect

Free planNo
Macrium Reflect built its reputation on the only test that matters: the restore worked. Its images mount, browse and bare metal restore with a dependability that made it the recommendation of IT technicians for their own machines, and Reflect X carries that engine into the subscription era.
Price it carefully because the channels disagree. Home edition figures near 49.99 dollars a year circulate in comparisons, while Macrium's business listings on G2 start at 65 dollars a device. Either way it is the premium imaging choice, bought for the night everything else has already gone wrong.
What we like- The imaging engine reviewers reach for first: fast incremental images, a rescue environment that boots on difficult hardware, and delta restore that rebuilds only what changed, Image Guardian shields your backup files from ransomware tampering, Reflect X moved the product to subscription with home pricing reported from 49.99 dollars per year, though G2's 2026 listing shows the Reflect annual plan at 65 dollars per device, a one time LTSC purchase is listed at 195 dollars for buyers who need a fixed version
Watch out for- The beloved free edition was retired
- There is now a 30 day trial instead, reported prices differ by channel, so confirm the current home figure at purchase, no bundled cloud storage: you supply the destination, Mac and Linux are outside its world
#2EaseUS Todo Backup
Best for: Best all round home backup4.8/5 on

Starting price$39.95 per year
Free planYes
EaseUS is the recommendation for the ordinary household PC: everything a home user needs, explained in plain language, at a price that can still be paid once. In a category marching to subscriptions, its perpetual licence is a differentiator its buyers mention by name.
Do the licence reading before choosing. Yearly suits a machine you will replace soon; perpetual suits the five year desktop; lifetime upgrades suit the user who hates this decision recurring. All three exist here, which is the point.
What we like- PCWorld's best overall for most PC users in its 2026 review, praising a mature suite of imaging, file backup, cloning and sync in an interface beginners survive, honest licensing choice: 39.95 dollars per year, a perpetual licence at 59.99 dollars, or lifetime upgrades at 79.99 dollars per its review pricing, a capable free edition exists for basic jobs, fast in testing: PCWorld's review cited a 700GB backup in 13 minutes, optional EaseUS cloud storage for the off site copy
Watch out for- No support for third party online storage in the current version per PCWorld, so cloud means its own, occasional interface quirks and sync module bugs were noted in review, nothing fatal, the perpetual licence's upgrade terms need reading: lifetime of the installation is not your lifetime, upsells for the company's other utilities appear in the free edition
#3Acronis True Image
Best for: Backup plus anti ransomware4.3/5 on

Visit acronis.com
Starting price$49.99 per year
Free planNo
Acronis is the one subscription answer to two fears: the dead drive and the encrypted one. Its anti ransomware layer is a real differentiator, actively reversing unauthorised encryption in its design, which no pure imaging tool here attempts.
Buy it at the tier whose cloud amount fits your data, because a backup suite whose cloud fills in month two protects nothing in month three. For local only backup to your own drive, Essentials at 49.99 dollars competes directly with Macrium, and the choice turns on whether you value Acronis's security layer or Macrium's restore focus more.
What we like- The fullest package: imaging and file backup plus active anti ransomware protection that watches for encryption behaviour and rolls files back, Essentials at 49.99 dollars per year for local backup, Advanced at 72.99 dollars adding 250GB of cloud storage, Premium at 124.99 dollars with 1TB, full disk images rebuild a complete system, not only documents, Microsoft 365 backup is available in its family of tools
Watch out for- The entry tier has no cloud storage, so the online copy starts at the Advanced tier, the suite does security, backup and utilities, and the interface and upsells show the sprawl, subscription only: perpetual Acronis is history, storage amounts are modest against dedicated cloud backup rivals
#4AOMEI Backupper
Best for: Strong free tier, cheap upgrades4.3/5 on
G2 (18 reviews, checked Oct 2026)

Starting priceFree; Pro $39.95 per year
Free planYes
AOMEI is the value engine of Windows backup. Its free tier is not a demo; it is the product most home users need, and its paid tier is priced like a utility rather than a platform. Households standardising several PCs feel the difference immediately.
Its natural buyer keeps backups local, a USB drive or a NAS, and wants cloning for the inevitable SSD upgrade. If your plan needs integrated cloud, Acronis or a backup service does that job more directly.
What we like- The free Standard edition already performs system, disk, partition and file backup with scheduling and bootable rescue media, which covers most home users at zero cost, Professional at 39.95 dollars per year adds dissimilar hardware restore, real time sync and cloning polish, with a lifetime licence reported around 69.95 dollars, disk cloning for SSD upgrades is a speciality users praise, the interface is the calmest of the Chinese suites in this list
Watch out for- Cloud backup runs through synced folders rather than a native cloud tier, support and documentation quality vary, free edition omits the features that matter in a hardware change restore, the company's promotional giveaway culture means prices online vary wildly
- Buy from its own store for the real terms
Starting priceFree

Veeam Agent is the professional's free gift. The same engineering culture that backs up banks images your home PC without charge, and restores it with the same seriousness. Technicians recommend it precisely because it behaves like infrastructure, not like an app.
If you can live with a utilitarian interface and supply your own destination drive, it is the strongest zero cost imaging on Windows, full stop. Households wanting hand holding should look at EaseUS instead and pay for the kindness.
What we like- A genuinely free, full machine backup agent from the company enterprises trust with their servers: volume level images, file backup and recovery media, backups target an external drive, a NAS or a Veeam repository, which home labs and small offices actually run, no account nagging or feature hostage behaviour in the free edition, paid editions add support and advanced features for business workstations
Watch out for- The free edition is one job done properly, not a suite: scheduling and retention options are simpler than the paid rivals, no consumer cloud storage built in, its language and logs speak IT, which home users may find dry, business features sit behind Veeam's licensing, quoted through its channels
Starting priceFree (Community Edition)
Free planYes
Paragon is the quiet veteran. Its Community Edition asks for nothing, not even registration, and images a drive with the competence of a company that has handled disks since the 1990s. For an occasional, deliberate backup, a monthly image before big changes, it is perfectly judged.
Regular, automated, monitored backup for a household belongs to the scheduled suites above. Paragon's free tool is the well made spare tyre: essential when needed, not the vehicle.
What we like- The Community Edition performs full disk imaging for personal use at no cost and, unusually, without demanding an account, Paragon's disk expertise is decades deep: its partitioning and file system tools are industry infrastructure, so the imaging sits on proven foundations, paid Hard Disk Manager extends into partitioning, migration and wiping in one toolkit, a calm, old school utility that does its job without a dashboard of offers
Watch out for- The free edition is personal use only and imaging focused
- Business use needs a licence, interface and release cadence feel traditional next to EaseUS, cloud features are not its game, support for the free edition is community level
#7NovaBACKUP

NovaBACKUP closes the list as the bundled alternative: one bill for the program and the cloud space, aimed at small businesses that want the 3-2-1 pattern without assembling it. Its PC with Cloud shape is exactly what Acronis charges 124.99 dollars for at the 1TB level.
Because its current pricing was not pinned in our sources, treat the first visit as the quote: confirm the dollar price, the cloud amount and the renewal. If they land near the historical euro figure, it is a fair, support led package.
What we like- Sold as a complete answer: local imaging and file backup with cloud storage bundled on its PC with Cloud plan, previously listed at 99.95 euros per year including 1TB of cloud space, US based support is part of its pitch to small businesses, disaster recovery imaging plus the off site copy in one product removes the two vendor juggle, long history in the small business backup market
Watch out for- Current US pricing needs confirming on its site, so this field says See website, less reviewed and less discussed than the leaders, so community knowledge is thinner, pricing in euros in some listings signals a less US centred operation than its support pitch suggests, home users get more hand holding from EaseUS
How we chose
We compared Windows backup programs in October 2026, rating them the way reviewers and technicians do: on restore reliability, imaging completeness, scheduling, and what the free editions genuinely include. Prices come from vendor pages and current review pricing, including PCWorld's October 2026 review pricing for EaseUS and G2's July 2026 Macrium listing; where channels disagree, the entry says so. We did not perform restores for this guide; reliability characterisations reflect the published review consensus, labelled as such.
The habits that make any of these work
Build the rescue media today. Every tool here can create a bootable USB that runs the restore when Windows will not. Make it, boot it once to prove it sees your backup drive, and label it. A backup program without tested rescue media is a plan for a day that will not come.
Keep one copy away from the PC. An external drive that lives plugged in dies with the machine, or is encrypted with it. Rotate two drives, or pair local imaging here with a cloud copy from a service. The tools differ; this rule does not, and it decides more outcomes than any feature table.
Schedule it, then check the log monthly. Backups fail quietly: a full destination, a changed drive letter, a laptop asleep at the scheduled hour. Sixty seconds reading the success log each month is the entire maintenance burden, and skipping it is how people discover a year of failures on the one day they need the file.
Test a file restore, not your faith. Restore one folder to a scratch location every few months. It takes minutes, proves the chain end to end, and teaches you the clicks before the day your hands shake. The best rated software in this list still cannot help an owner who has never opened its restore screen.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free Windows backup software?
Veeam Agent for a full machine image with professional reliability, AOMEI Backupper Standard for the friendliest free feature set, and Paragon's Community Edition for account free imaging. All three are genuinely free for home use; EaseUS also offers a free edition with basic coverage.
Is Windows' built in backup enough?
No. Windows 11's backup covers settings, apps lists and OneDrive folders; it does not image your system or protect local only data completely. Microsoft itself positions it as convenience, not disaster recovery. Pair it with any tool here for a real plan.
Subscription or perpetual licence?
For a PC you will keep three years or more, EaseUS's 59.99 dollar perpetual licence or AOMEI's lifetime option usually beats three years of 39.95 to 49.99 dollar subscriptions. Subscriptions win when you value the newest security features, as in Acronis, or expect to change machines and tools often.
What is the difference between imaging and file backup?
Imaging copies the whole drive as a recoverable system: Windows, programs and files, restorable onto a new drive in one operation. File backup copies documents and media only; after a drive failure you reinstall Windows and your programs first. Serious setups image the system drive and file back up the data that changes daily.
How much storage do I need for backups?
At least twice your used disk space for imaging with history: a 500GB drive half full wants a 1TB backup destination as a working minimum, more if you keep months of versions. Cloud storage in suites is sized separately; Acronis's 250GB Advanced tier suits documents, not full images of a large drive.
