Best Driver License Scanning Software in 2026: 10 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • VeriScan by IDScan.net is the only tool here with a full public price list. It starts at $35 per month or $380 per year for one device, and forensic fake ID checks start at $155 per month.
  • Patronscan, Intellicheck, Scandit, Anyline, Regula and Microblink sell on quotes. Plan on a sales call before you get a number.
  • TokenWorks sells handheld and countertop scanners as a one-time hardware purchase starting around $745. Basic age verification needs no subscription.
  • If you are building your own app, Scanbot, Dynamsoft, Microblink and Anyline all read the PDF417 barcode on the back of US licenses on the device itself. Dynamsoft is the only one that publishes a starting price ($1,499 per year).
  • Mobile driver's licenses (mDLs) are becoming a real buying factor. VeriScan for iOS reads IDs stored in Apple Wallet, and Regula has added mDL verification to its SDK.

The best driver license scanning software

#1

VeriScan (IDScan.net)

Best for: Small businesses that want clear per-device pricing
Visit idscan.net
Starting price$35 per device/month or $380 per year (Basic)
Free planFree trial
VeriScan (IDScan.net) homepage

For a liquor store, dispensary, gym or front desk that wants to start scanning licenses this week, VeriScan is the easiest place to begin. You can see the price before talking to anyone. The Basic tier is $35 a month or $380 a year for a single device, and it scans all North American IDs and global passports, verifies age, runs 2D barcode security checks and uses standard lists.

The tiers go up quickly as you add features. Premium adds a cloud portal, syncing across devices, custom lists, alerts and third-party checks. Enterprise adds waivers, badge printing and integrations. The top VeriScan tier, ID Authentication, costs $155 per month and adds ultraviolet and infrared light scanning plus hologram and watermark checks. Offline use also depends on the plan. Basic lets you keep scanning without Wi-Fi for 5 days, and the higher tiers allow 14.

The catch is that Basic is a single-device product. Once you have two registers or an entrance plus a back office, you are paying per device on Premium or above. Budget for that before you sign up for an annual plan.

What we like
  • Public pricing on all main tiers
  • Reads US, Canadian and Mexican licenses plus passports
  • IOS app accepts Apple Wallet IDs
Watch out for
  • Cloud portal and multi-device sync require Premium at $65 per month
  • Forensic checks need specialty hardware and the $155 tier
#2

Intellicheck

Best for: Banks, auto dealers and retailers fighting identity fraud
Visit intellicheck.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Intellicheck homepage

Intellicheck makes the most sense when a fake ID costs you a car, a credit line or a high-value order, not just a fine. The company's real-time identity verification reads the authoritative data in DMV-issued driver's license barcodes across the US, US territories and Canada, and returns a result in under a second.

Rollout is flexible. Intellicheck lists five access modes. Mobile, Portal and Desktop work without integration, and Direct (REST API and SDK) and Capture (a white-labeled link the customer opens on their own phone) are for teams that want to build it in. The FAQ says the no-integration options can go live the same day, and API integration usually takes less than two weeks.

On pricing, Intellicheck sells a SaaS subscription where every customer pays based on verification volume and can add optional services such as Doc Verify, Face Verify and Doc Liveness. That suits high-volume operations. A single convenience store will likely find it more than it needs.

What we like
  • Mobile, web portal and desktop options go live the same day
  • Strong focus on the authoritative data in the DMV barcode
  • API and SDK for deeper integration
Watch out for
  • No public pricing
  • Built for fraud and KYC more than for simple age checks at a bar door
#3

Patronscan

Best for: Bars, nightclubs and venues with door security
Visit patronscan.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo (30-day money-back guarantee)
Patronscan homepage

Patronscan is built for the door at a busy venue. Its main selling point is the shared flagged network, so a patron banned at one participating venue can be flagged at another. Owners in hospitality often care about that more than about data entry speed.

On the technical side, Patronscan says it checks more than 8,500 data points and uses proprietary algorithms to spot small differences in fonts, spacing and layout. The hardware covers different settings. Guard and Guard+ are rugged countertop units for high-traffic entrances. Handheld 2.0 and 2.1 are portable, and 2.1 adds a cellular option. IVAC self-service scanners connect to doors, turnstiles or beer coolers for unattended age checks.

Pricing is the honest weakness. Patronscan quotes are built around your venue, industry and verification volume, so you cannot compare costs until you have talked to sales. The 30-day money-back guarantee takes some of the risk out of the first purchase.

What we like
  • Forensic checks on fonts, spacing and layout
  • Shared flagged-patron network
  • Hardware built for busy entrances
Watch out for
  • Quote-only pricing
  • The ID scanning is tied to Patronscan's own hardware
#4

TokenWorks (IDScanner.com)

Best for: Owners who want to buy a scanner once and skip subscriptions
Visit idscanner.com
Starting priceFrom about $745 one-time (AgeVisor Mini or IDVisor Smart V2, current sale price)
Free planNo (30-day money-back guarantee)
TokenWorks (IDScanner.com) homepage

TokenWorks takes a different approach from the subscription vendors. You buy a dedicated device and own it. On its current store page, the IDVisor Smart V3 lists at $945, the AgeVisor 3 at $995, and the AgeVisor Mini and IDVisor Smart V2 are on sale for $745. TokenWorks says no subscription is required for age verification and software updates are free for life, which makes the total cost easy to plan.

The IDWedge line handles data entry rather than age checks. The IDWedgeKB scans IDs and fills forms instantly, with simple USB setup on PC and Linux. Hotels, rental counters and clinics retyping license details into older software are the best fit.

For fake ID detection beyond the barcode, TokenWorks sells the IDentiFake system. Acuant's AssureID powers IDentiFake to run dozens of forensic checks, including microprint and hologram detection. Keep in mind that a basic barcode reader will not catch a well-made fake with a valid barcode.

What we like
  • One-time hardware purchase
  • No subscription required for age verification
  • IDWedge models auto-fill forms on a PC
Watch out for
  • Hardware-first, so you buy a device rather than install an app
  • Advanced forensic checks sit on separate IDentiFake hardware
#5

Scandit ID Scanning

Best for: Retail and delivery teams scanning IDs on phones
Visit scandit.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planFree trial
Scandit ID Scanning homepage

Scandit is a good fit for retailers and delivery fleets that already give staff smartphones and do not want a separate scanner at every register. Scandit's ID Validate checks age and authenticity in a single scan, with no delay and no internet connection needed. That matters for curbside pickup and alcohol delivery, where signal is unreliable.

Small teams can skip development. ID Scan and ID Validate are also available in the turnkey Scandit Express app, which sends scanned data into the apps you already use. Developers can use the ID Scanner SDK instead.

Scandit does not publish ID scanning prices. Its pricing page describes fixed-cost and volume-based options, so you will need a quote. Scandit's sweet spot is chains and logistics companies with many devices, not a single bar.

What we like
  • Validation happens on the device with no internet needed
  • Turnkey Express app means no custom code
  • Works on standard iOS and Android phones
Watch out for
  • Quote-based pricing
  • The full feature set is aimed at enterprise retail more than single shops
#7

Regula Document Reader SDK

Best for: Global document coverage plus mDL checks
Visit regulaforensics.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planFree trial (30 days)
Regula Document Reader SDK homepage

Regula comes from forensic document examination, and its SDK reflects that. The Document Reader SDK reads and digitally verifies passports, ID cards, driver's licenses, visas, mobile driver's licenses and other ID documents. It is a good match for travel, rental and financial businesses that see both US licenses and foreign documents.

Regula has also moved early on digital credentials. The SDK now supports server-side verification of mobile driver's licenses that follow ISO/IEC 18013-5, the international standard for smartphone driving credentials. As more states issue mDLs, that support will matter more.

The trial is generous. Regula offers a 30-day free trial with full access to the SDK and no feature limits. The downside is cost visibility. Regula advertises usage-based pricing but does not publish rates.

What we like
  • Large document template database
  • Checks barcodes, MRZ and visual security features
  • Adds mobile driver's license verification
Watch out for
  • Usage-based pricing is not public
  • More than a small business needs for simple age checks
#8

Anyline

Best for: Field, roadside and enforcement teams
Visit anyline.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planFree trial
Anyline homepage

Anyline is designed for people working outside: transit inspectors, roadside assistance crews, police and field service teams. Anyline says all scans run on the device with ISO 27001-certified security, so no personal data reaches the cloud. Its marketing also says it reads damaged, dirty and glare-affected IDs, which is common in the field.

Document coverage goes well beyond the US. Anyline reads driver's licenses from the European Union, UK, North America (USA and Canada), Australia, GCC countries and more. That helps if your users or drivers come from several countries.

Contracts run annually. Anyline sells annual licenses and tailors each package to the customer. Expect a sales process instead of a sign-up button, though a trial app is available on request.

What we like
  • Offline-first, on-device processing
  • Reads worn or glare-affected cards
  • Covers the EU, UK, North America, Australia and GCC countries
Watch out for
  • Annual licenses only, priced per customer
  • No turnkey counter app for small retailers
#9

Scanbot SDK

Best for: Developers who want flat annual pricing and fully offline scanning
Visit scanbot.io
Starting priceSee website
Free planFree trial
Scanbot SDK homepage

Scanbot fits development teams that need clean, structured data from a license and want a predictable bill. Scanbot's US driver's license scanner reads the PDF417 barcode on the back and returns plain key-value pairs, and it runs fully offline with no server connection.

The pricing model is the main reason to choose it. Scanbot uses unlimited scanning with a fixed annual fee, so costs do not rise with volume. Scanbot says integration takes no more than a few hours, and documentation and demo apps are public.

Be clear about what it does not do. Reading a barcode tells you what is encoded, not whether the card is genuine, so a good fake with a valid barcode will pass. Scanbot has also been acquired by Apryse. Ask about long-term plans if you are committing to a multi-year build.

What we like
  • Fixed annual fee with unlimited scans
  • Works fully offline
  • Integration typically takes a few hours
Watch out for
  • Reads the PDF417 barcode only, with no forensic fake ID detection
  • Now owned by Apryse, so check the roadmap
#10

Dynamsoft Barcode Reader

Best for: Developers adding license barcode parsing on a budget
Visit dynamsoft.com
Starting price$1,499 per year (usage-based)
Free planFree trial
Dynamsoft Barcode Reader homepage

Dynamsoft is a general barcode SDK, and driver's licenses are one of its documented use cases. That makes it a practical pick for internal tools, kiosks and line-of-business apps that need to pull a name, address and date of birth from a license into a form. Dynamsoft's usage-based plans start at $1,499 per year, and flat annual fee options are available for predictable budgets.

It runs almost anywhere. Dynamsoft offers web, mobile and server/desktop SDKs, and offline licensing is available for locked-down environments. You can request a trial license from the site.

The trade-off is the same as Scanbot's. You get accurate data capture but no authenticity checks. Third-party reviewers on Capterra also say having to upgrade the license for new SDK versions is frustrating, so ask how upgrades are handled before you sign.

What we like
  • Published starting price
  • Web, mobile and server/desktop SDKs
  • Offline licensing available
Watch out for
  • General barcode SDK rather than an ID verification product
  • No fake ID authentication

How we chose

We started from what buyers actually ask for: software that reads US driver's licenses quickly and accurately, and in many cases catches fakes as well. For each candidate we checked the vendor's own pricing page, product pages and developer documentation. We confirmed that driver's license scanning is a core, documented feature and not just a line in a brochure. Public reviews on G2, Capterra and Reddit helped us spot recurring complaints, such as license upgrade friction and per-device costs.

We then compared what affects day-to-day use: per-device versus volume versus flat pricing, contract length, offline use, mobile versus dedicated hardware, integrations and data export, and which company size each tool suits. We did not run hands-on lab tests. Where a vendor does not publish prices, we say so instead of guessing.

What to check before you buy an ID scanner

Decide whether you need data capture or fake detection

This is the biggest fork in the road. Reading the PDF417 barcode gets you name, date of birth, address and expiry, which covers age checks and data entry. It does not prove the card is real, because a fake can carry a valid-looking barcode. If underage sales or fraud would cost you your license or real money, look at tools with forensic checks (UV, infrared, hologram or font analysis) such as VeriScan's ID Authentication tier, Patronscan, TokenWorks IDentiFake, Intellicheck or Regula.

Match the delivery model to your team

There are three models: - Turnkey apps and devices (VeriScan, Patronscan, TokenWorks, Scandit Express, Intellicheck Mobile). These can be running in a day. - Integrations (Intellicheck Direct, VeriScan Enterprise, IDWedge form filling). These push scan data into your POS, CRM or dealer management system. - SDKs (Microblink, Anyline, Scanbot, Dynamsoft, Regula). These need a developer, but you get full control of the experience.

Do the multi-year math

Per-device subscriptions look cheap with one register and add up across five locations. One-time hardware has a higher upfront cost but no monthly bill. Volume-based pricing scales with traffic, which is fine until a busy season. Ask every vendor about contract length, renewal increases and what happens to your stored scan data if you cancel.

Ask about privacy, retention and offline mode

Scanning licenses means storing personal data. Check whether processing happens on the device or in the cloud, whether you can set retention to delete records right away, and whether the tool works when Wi-Fi drops. Also ask whether the tool can read mobile driver's licenses. Customers are starting to show them at the counter.

Frequently asked questions

Can a phone app scan a driver's license as well as a dedicated scanner?

For reading the barcode, yes. Modern phone cameras read PDF417 barcodes reliably, and apps from VeriScan, Scandit and Intellicheck do it well. Dedicated hardware still wins for high-volume entrances and for forensic checks that need UV or infrared light.

Does barcode scanning catch fake IDs?

Only partly. Barcode checks catch fakes with malformed or inconsistent data, but a well-made fake can carry a correctly formatted barcode. To catch those, you need tools that also examine the card's physical security features or compare it against known templates.

How much does driver license scanning software cost?

It depends on the model. VeriScan starts at $35 per device per month. TokenWorks devices start at about $745 one-time, and Dynamsoft's SDK starts at $1,499 per year. Patronscan, Intellicheck, Scandit, Regula, Anyline, Scanbot and Microblink quote prices based on volume and features.

Is it legal to store data from scanned driver's licenses?

Rules differ by state and industry. Some states limit what businesses can keep from a license scan and for how long. Choose software with adjustable retention settings, and check your state's rules or ask counsel before you store scans long term.

Which option is best for a single small store?

A single location doing age checks usually does well with VeriScan Basic or a TokenWorks device. Both are quick to set up and have predictable costs. Move to a forensic tier if you see sophisticated fakes or your license is at risk.

Do these tools read mobile driver's licenses?

Some do. VeriScan's iOS app reads IDs in Apple Wallet, and Regula supports ISO/IEC 18013-5 mDL verification in its SDK. Ask each vendor directly, because support is changing quickly.
