Top Rated HIM Software for Hospitals in 2026: 7 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • No single product covers all of health information management. Hospitals usually combine an EHR's HIM module with separate tools for coding, CDI, release of information and document capture.
  • Dolbey Fusion CAC won the 2026 Best in KLAS award for computer-assisted coding with a score of 94.2, and MRO won the 2026 award for release of information with a score of 96.0.
  • None of the seven vendors publishes list prices. Every deal is a quote based on bed count, discharge volume, modules and EHR integration work, so plan for a sales cycle, not a credit card checkout.
  • Ownership is shifting. Solventum announced in August 2026 that it intends to separate its Health Information Systems business, and Streamline Health's eValuator now sits inside MDaudit after a 2025 acquisition. Get roadmap and support commitments in writing.

The best top rated HIM software for hospitals

#1

Solventum 360 Encompass

Best for: Large health systems unifying coding, CDI and audit
Visit solventum.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Solventum 360 Encompass homepage

Solventum 360 Encompass (formerly 3M 360 Encompass) is the platform many large hospital coding departments already know. Its pitch is consolidation: facility coding, professional services coding, clinical documentation integrity and audit run in one system, with links into computer-assisted physician documentation. For a health system tired of reconciling a coding tool, a CDI tool and an audit spreadsheet, that single workflow is the main draw.

The Audit Expert add-on deserves attention. It gives coders edits and second-level reviews at the point of coding, and the outpatient prebill review module uses AI to flag likely errors before a claim leaves the building. CDI teams can sort their worklists by focus DRGs, length of stay, severity of illness and risk of mortality, which matters when two specialists cover a 400-bed hospital.

The catch is timing. In August 2026 Solventum announced its intent to separate the Health Information Systems business, which reports put at about $1.4 billion in annual sales. That does not make the product risky to buy, but it does make contract language important. Get support terms, price caps on renewal and roadmap commitments written into the agreement.

What we like
  • Facility coding, professional coding, CDI and audit share one platform
  • Inpatient and outpatient prebill review catches coding errors before claims go out
  • CDI prioritization by focus DRGs, length of stay, severity and mortality risk
Watch out for
  • Corporate separation announced in 2026 adds roadmap uncertainty
  • Breadth means a long, staff-heavy implementation
#2

Dolbey Fusion CAC

Best for: Community and regional hospitals wanting top-rated CAC
Visit dolbey.com
Starting priceSee website

Dolbey Fusion CAC homepage

Dolbey is far smaller than Solventum or Optum, but its Fusion CAC product has a customer satisfaction record that larger vendors would like to have. KLAS named it Best in KLAS for computer-assisted coding again in 2026, with a score of 94.2, and Dolbey says the product has held that spot every year since 2017. For a mid-size hospital that wants a responsive vendor more than a sprawling suite, that track record is a real buying signal.

The product suggests ICD-10-CM, PCS and CPT codes for all patient types, so one platform can serve both hospital and professional coders. Chart prioritization pushes the most complex or urgent cases to the top of the queue to help cut DNFB (discharged not final billed) backlogs. The AutoClose feature codes simple outpatient visits on its own and sends them straight to billing, which frees experienced coders for inpatient work.

The weakness is scope. Fusion CAC is a coding and CDI tool, not a full HIM suite, so you will still need separate answers for ROI, document capture and deficiency tracking. Dolbey's productivity and accuracy figures (up to 25% and 10%) come from the vendor, so ask for references at hospitals your size.

What we like
  • 2026 Best in KLAS for computer-assisted coding
  • AutoClose codes simple outpatient visits with no manual touch
  • Built-in audit, CDI alerts and denial tracking modules
Watch out for
  • Smaller company than the big platform vendors
  • Pricing and contract terms only available through sales
#3

Optum Enterprise CAC and CDI 3D

Best for: Hospitals that want CAC and CDI on one NLP engine
Visit business.optum.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Optum Enterprise CAC and CDI 3D homepage

Optum sells this as a pair. Enterprise CAC handles hospital coding using Optum's Clinical Language Intelligence natural language processing, and CDI 3D runs on the same platform, so coders and CDI specialists look at the same encounter rather than handing records back and forth. Optum says the system can review 100% of records concurrently and flag cases with documentation gaps.

The module list is practical. Audit and Compliance Manager finds cases at risk for denial before billing. LYNX Outpatient Infusion Charging uses its own algorithm to charge infusion and injection services correctly, a common source of lost revenue. Analytics include data exports and Power BI dashboards, which helps if your finance team already works in Microsoft's reporting tools.

For some buyers, the honest concern is not the software. Optum is part of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest payers in the country, and some hospital leaders are uncomfortable sending coding workflows through a payer-owned vendor. Ask directly about data use, firewalls between business units and what happens to your data at contract end.

What we like
  • Coding and CDI share one engine and one patient record view
  • Audit and Compliance Manager targets pre-bill audits at cases likely to be denied
  • Power BI dashboards and data exports included in analytics
Watch out for
  • Optum's ties to UnitedHealth Group make some providers uneasy
  • Modular packaging can make quotes hard to compare
#4

MRO

Best for: Outsourcing release of information with strong service
Visit mrocorp.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
MRO homepage

Release of information is the part of HIM that draws complaints from patients, attorneys and payers alike, and MRO has built its reputation on taking it off a hospital's hands. KLAS rated MRO number one for ROI in 2026 with a score of 96.0 out of 100, and the company says it has held that position for 12 years. If your HIM director spends too much time on request backlogs and subpoenas, MRO belongs on the short list.

Its Exchange Manager platform connects to EHRs and requester portals to automate the intake, retrieval and delivery of standardized requests such as risk adjustment, HEDIS and continuity of care. More complex requests go through a workflow engine with AI-assisted logging. MRO has also moved into clinical data abstraction (it absorbed Q-Centrix) and recently launched an AI abstraction engine called Prodigy.

The trade-off is control. MRO is a managed service with technology attached, so your team gives up some day-to-day oversight in exchange for staff and expertise. Read the service-level terms closely, including turnaround targets and who absorbs the cost of errors.

What we like
  • 2026 Best in KLAS for release of information, 12 years running
  • Exchange Manager automates payer, risk adjustment and continuity of care requests
  • Long-standing SOC 2 compliance
Watch out for
  • Mostly a service relationship, not software you run yourself
  • Covers ROI and data work, not coding or CDI
#5

Datavant

Best for: Digital ROI at health-system scale
Visit datavant.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo

Datavant merged with Ciox Health in 2021 and runs one of the largest release of information operations in the country. The company says 70% of the top 100 US health systems depend on its ROI solution. For a multi-hospital system that wants one vendor handling requests across every facility, that scale is the main argument.

Recent work points toward digital fulfillment. Datavant added ID.me identity verification to its Patient Request Tool in 2026 to cut friction when patients ask for their own records, and launched Provider Exchange to help providers retrieve outside records. It also offers coding, denials and audit services, and won a 2026 Best in KLAS award that included outsourced coding.

The downside of size is consistency. A vendor this large runs many local teams, and service can feel different from one site to the next. Ask for references from hospitals with your EHR and request mix, and make sure the contract spells out turnaround times and escalation paths.

What we like
  • Says 70% of the top 100 US health systems use its ROI solution
  • Patient Request Tool with ID.me identity verification
  • Large network for outbound record retrieval
Watch out for
  • Very broad company, so HIM is one product line among many
  • Service quality can vary by site and request type
#6

Hyland OnBase

Best for: Scanning, indexing and unstructured record content
4.4/5 on G2 (324 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit hyland.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Hyland OnBase homepage

Every hospital still drowns in paper and faxes: outside records, consent forms, referral packets. OnBase is Hyland's answer, an enterprise content platform with a large set of HIM-specific solutions. It handles express, front-office and batch scanning, routes documents for indexing and makes them viewable within the EHR so clinicians do not hunt through a separate system.

The HIM features go past storage. Medical records management tracks charts through coding, analysis and physician completion. DeficiencyPop lets physicians sign documents and fill in missing information from a web app. There is a release of information module, HIM productivity dashboards and governance rules for retention. Intelligent MedRecords uses generative AI to classify incoming documents, which can cut manual indexing time.

Know what it is not. OnBase passes documents to a third-party coding system rather than suggesting codes itself, so you still need a CAC product. It is also a highly configurable platform, and hospitals often rely on Hyland consultants or a certified partner to build and maintain workflows. Budget for that.

What we like
  • Covers capture, deficiency completion, ROI and retention in one content platform
  • Displays scanned documents inside the EHR
  • Generative AI classification of incoming records (Intelligent MedRecords)
Watch out for
  • Does not code charts itself and relies on a third-party coding system
  • Configuration often needs trained admins or consultants
#7

MDaudit (eValuator)

Best for: Pre-bill coding and charge audits
Visit mdaudit.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
MDaudit (eValuator) homepage

eValuator started at Streamline Health as a cloud tool that runs automated analysis of inpatient and outpatient coding and charge data before claims go out. MDaudit finished acquiring Streamline in August 2025, and eValuator and RevID now sit alongside MDaudit's billing compliance and revenue integrity software. For a hospital worried about coding errors and audit exposure, it adds a safety net on top of whatever coding tool you already use.

The appeal is coverage. Instead of a coding manager sampling a small share of charts, the software screens accounts automatically and sends the risky ones to a human. MDaudit publishes customer case studies with dollar figures, but as with any vendor ROI claim, ask how the results were measured.

This is not a replacement for a CAC or CDI product, so treat it as an add-on. Because the merger is recent, ask how eValuator will connect with the rest of the MDaudit platform over the next two years and whether pricing will change at renewal.

What we like
  • EValuator reviews coding and charge data on inpatient and outpatient accounts before billing
  • Pairs pre-bill review with MDaudit's billing compliance and audit tools
  • Cloud-based, which lightens IT work
Watch out for
  • An audit layer, not a coding or document system
  • Recent merger means product consolidation is still in progress

How we chose

We started with the core jobs a hospital HIM department handles: coding, clinical documentation integrity, release of information, record capture and deficiency management, and pre-bill audit. For each vendor we read the official product pages, documentation and recent company announcements. Then we checked independent signals such as the 2026 Best in KLAS results and public reviews on G2, Capterra and Reddit HIM communities. We did not test the products ourselves.

We kept only vendors that sell to US hospitals today and have a clear HIM product. We weighed EHR integration, company stability, support reputation and fit for hospitals from roughly 25 to several hundred beds. We left out EHR vendors' own HIM modules (Epic, Oracle Health, MEDITECH) as standalone picks because they come with the EHR rather than being bought separately. None of the seven vendors publishes prices, so every price field reads See website.

Choosing HIM software: what hospital buyers should check

Start with your EHR, not the vendor list

Your EHR already includes chart deficiency tracking, a master patient index and often a basic ROI and coding workspace. List what it does well and where your team works around it. Most hospitals buy third-party HIM tools to fill specific gaps, such as weak code suggestions, slow ROI turnaround or piles of unindexed scans.

Separate software from service

Coding, CDI and document tools are mostly software you run. ROI vendors like MRO and Datavant are largely managed services. That changes how you judge them. For software, look at accuracy, workflow and integration. For services, look at staffing, turnaround times, error accountability and how requester fees are handled under your state's rules.

Ask about integration and data export

Find out exactly how each tool connects to your EHR (HL7, FHIR, vendor-specific APIs), who builds the interfaces and who pays for upgrades. Ask for the format and timing of a full data export if you leave. With ownership changes at Solventum and Streamline in the past two years, exit terms are not a formality.

Plan the timeline and the contract

Enterprise HIM contracts usually run for several years. Implementations take months, not weeks, once you include interface work, code-set testing and coder training. Push for renewal price caps, service-level credits and a named implementation lead. Ask for references from hospitals with your EHR, bed count and payer mix, and call them yourself.

Measure before you buy

Pull baseline numbers for DNFB days, coder productivity per hour, query response rates, denial rates tied to coding and ROI turnaround. Vendors will quote their best results. Your own baseline is the only way to tell whether the tool paid off after go-live.

Frequently asked questions

What does HIM software do in a hospital?

Health information management software supports the people who manage the legal medical record. That includes coding encounters for billing, clinical documentation integrity reviews, tracking chart deficiencies, scanning and indexing outside documents, and releasing records to patients, payers and attorneys. Most hospitals use a mix of their EHR's HIM module and specialized tools.

Which HIM tools are rated highest by hospitals?

KLAS Research's 2026 Best in KLAS awards are the most cited independent ranking. Dolbey Fusion CAC won computer-assisted coding, MRO won release of information, Microsoft Nuance CDI won clinical documentation integrity and CodaMetrix won autonomous coding. The rankings measure customer satisfaction, so also check fit for your EHR and size.

How much does HIM software cost for a hospital?

None of the vendors in this guide publishes prices. Quotes depend on bed count, annual discharges, modules, EHR integration and whether services are included. ROI services are often paid for partly through fees charged to requesters, within state and federal limits, so ask how that is set up.

Can a small or critical access hospital use these tools?

Yes, though fit varies. Community hospitals often look at Dolbey and MDaudit's eValuator, and ROI vendors serve facilities of every size. Large platforms such as Solventum 360 Encompass are built with bigger coding departments in mind, so ask whether a smaller package is available.

Is autonomous coding ready to replace hospital coders?

Not for most inpatient work. Tools like Dolbey's AutoClose and dedicated autonomous coding vendors handle simpler outpatient and professional encounters well and send clean charts straight to billing. Complex inpatient cases still need certified coders, and auditors should review samples of automated output.
