How we make this list: we compare pricing pages, product documentation and public user reviews. Ratings come from G2, Capterra or Trustpilot, with the date we checked them.
Key takeaways
- Hapn is the only tool on this list that posts per-asset prices on its own site ($10 to $18 per asset per month). Every other vendor here quotes on request, so expect to go through a sales process.
- Construction-first platforms (Tenna, Clue, HCSS, Trackunit) go deeper on hour-based maintenance, job costing and attachments than general fleet vendors like Samsara and Motive.
- OEM data integration through AEMP feeds is now standard. Motive, HCSS and Tenna all pull data from major brands such as Deere, Cat, Komatsu and Volvo, so you need fewer aftermarket trackers.
- Ownership changes matter for long contracts. John Deere agreed to buy Tenna in December 2025, and Geotab announced a construction product (Geotab Build) in March 2026 with general availability planned for late 2026.

The best fleet visibility software for heavy equipment
#1Tenna
Best for: Mixed construction fleets with tools and materials4.6/5 on
Capterra (75 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit tenna.com

Tenna says it is built "from construction for construction," and you can see that in what it covers. The platform treats a 40-ton excavator, a light tower and a box of consumables as assets that each need a location and an owner. Many equipment managers track big iron in one system and small tools in a spreadsheet. Putting both in a single list is the main reason to shortlist Tenna.
You get many ways to track. Tenna supports GPS trackers, cellular, Bluetooth tags and QR codes, plus OEM telematics, AEMP feeds and ERP integrations. That lets you match the cost of the tracker to the value of the asset, instead of putting an expensive telematics unit on a cheap plate compactor.
The catch is the change in ownership. Deere and Company agreed to buy Tenna in December 2025, and reports at the time said Tenna would keep running as an independent business. That helps, but if most of your fleet is Cat or Komatsu, ask how mixed-fleet support will be protected before you sign a multi-year agreement.
What we like- Covers heavy equipment, vehicles, attachments, tools and consumables in one platform
- Pulls OEM telematics through AEMP integrations
- Offers GPS, cellular, Bluetooth and QR code tracking options
Watch out for- Pricing is quote-only
- Long-term roadmap now depends on John Deere ownership
#2Trackunit
Best for: Rental companies and large contractors2.8/5 on
G2 (6 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit trackunit.com

Free planNo
Trackunit supplies telematics to many rental fleets and equipment makers, and most of its customers are big rental houses and OEMs. Contractors get their own plan, but the strongest features were clearly built for rental work: capturing out-of-contract usage, branded customer portals and service triage.
It has the widest range of hardware on this list. Raw is the main telematics unit, Spot covers non-powered equipment, Kin is a small tag for tools, Pass controls operator access, and Beam gateways extend Bluetooth coverage across a site. Trackunit also offers IrisX, an AI data layer, and in 2026 it launched IrisX MCP, which connects fleet data to assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot.
The real weakness is fit for smaller buyers. Pricing is tailored and quote-based. With so many products, expect to spend real time on scoping calls working out what you need. A contractor with a few dozen machines may find a simpler tool gets them to the same map faster.
What we like- Separate pricing plans for contractors, rental firms and OEMs
- Large Bluetooth tag network for small and non-powered assets
- Volume pricing lowers the per-asset rate as you connect more machines
Watch out for- Product lineup is large and can feel complex for a 30-machine fleet
- No public price list
#3Samsara
Best for: Fleets that want trucks, dashcams and equipment on one platform4.5/5 on

Samsara makes the most sense when your trucks cause more trouble than your excavators. If you already use Samsara for dashcams and driver safety on your haul trucks, adding equipment gateways keeps everything in one account and one mobile app for your foremen.
The hardware is built for rough use. The Powered Asset Gateway Plus is rated IP67 and IP69K and stores data locally when cell coverage drops. Its internal battery provides more than 12 months of backup at two check-ins per day. Reports cover utilization, dormancy, time on site and trip history, and developer APIs let you pull data into your own systems.
It falls short on the equipment side. Construction-first platforms do more out of the box for hour-based preventive maintenance, rental tracking and job cost allocation. Samsara also does not publish prices, so get the per-asset rate, hardware cost and contract length in writing before comparing quotes.
What we like- Rugged powered gateway rated IP67 and IP69K with offline data logging
- Unpowered wallet-sized trackers for trailers and attachments
- One login for vehicles, AI dashcams and equipment
Watch out for- Pricing is not published
- Construction-specific maintenance and job costing are thinner than in specialist tools

Clue is built for the equipment manager, not the fleet safety officer. It brings yellow iron, trucks, tools and rentals into one place, then adds preventive maintenance schedules, work orders, inspections and dispatch. If your shop runs on a whiteboard and three spreadsheets, Clue is designed to replace all of them.
What stands out is how much of the maintenance and rental work sits right next to the map. You can see that a rented loader has been idle for nine days on the same screen where you schedule maintenance for an owned one, which is exactly the kind of decision this software is for. Clue also offers free resources such as a fault code guide and a CapEx planning template.
The catch is the buying process. There is no price list, only a request for a tailored plan. Because Clue is a smaller vendor, ask about support hours, implementation staff and how you would export your data if you ever leave.
What we like- Built specifically for heavy civil, earthmoving, utility and infrastructure contractors
- Combines location, utilization, work orders, inspections and rentals in one place
- Narrow construction focus keeps the interface relevant
Watch out for- Pricing requires a demo and a tailored plan
- Smaller company than the telematics giants
#5
HCSS Telematics
Best for: Contractors already using HeavyJob or Equipment360
Visit hcss.com

Free planNo
If you already estimate in HeavyBid and track jobs in HeavyJob, HCSS Telematics is the easiest choice. Telematics data flows into HCSS Dispatcher, Equipment360 and FuelerPlus, so engine hours can feed timecards and maintenance schedules without anyone typing numbers in twice.
The OEM Link feature is the practical win. Instead of buying aftermarket hardware for every newer machine, you bring in data from manufacturers such as John Deere, Cat, Volvo and Komatsu. It shows up in one web portal next to HCSS's own trackers for older or unsupported equipment.
The downside is that, on its own, HCSS Telematics is a fairly standard tracking product. The integrations are the reason to buy it. If you use a different job costing system, a standalone platform will probably serve you better.
What we like- OEM Link brings in data from Deere, Cat, Volvo, Komatsu and other brands
- Engine hours flow into HeavyJob timecards and Equipment360 maintenance
- Custom-drawn geofences that match real jobsite boundaries
Watch out for- Most of the value depends on owning other HCSS products
- Thin volume of public reviews

T3 came out of EquipmentShare's rental business. Its biggest advantage is that you can see rented machines without installing anything on them. If much of your fleet comes from EquipmentShare branches, those machines already report into T3. Add trackers to your own iron and you see both on one screen.
T3 does more than show location. Asset trackers report engine mileage and utilization, and geofences send SMS or email alerts when equipment moves outside business hours. The suite also includes apps that let crews clock in on site. EquipmentShare says T3 can pull OEM data that meets the AEMP standard through API feeds.
The real catch is neutrality. A platform owned by a rental company is naturally best at showing that company's equipment. If you rent from several providers, check how well other companies' rentals can be tracked before you commit.
What we like- Rented EquipmentShare machines show up alongside owned equipment
- Includes time clock apps, after-hours alerts and driver safety tools
- Integrates with Milwaukee One-Key for tool tracking
Watch out for- Strongest when you also rent from EquipmentShare
- Pricing not published
#7Motive
Best for: Truck-heavy fleets adding yellow iron4.4/5 on
G2 (3,257 reviews, checked Oct 2026)

Motive started out as an ELD company (electronic logging devices for trucks), and that history still shapes it. Contractors with many dump trucks and lowboys and a smaller group of heavy machines often find that Motive covers compliance well and handles equipment adequately.
For equipment, Motive pulls OEM telematics from brands like John Deere, Caterpillar, Komatsu and Volvo. You see engine hours, fuel remaining, fault codes and alerts for low oil or high temperature in one view. Asset gateways with GPS and Bluetooth can automatically pair equipment with the truck carrying it, which helps confirm deliveries.
The weakness is focus. Much of Motive's equipment monitoring page is about trailers and refrigerated cargo. Construction tasks like rental tracking and managing attachments are not its priority. Pricing is quote-based.
What we like- OEM integrations with John Deere, Caterpillar, Komatsu and Volvo
- Supports heavy equipment telematics via AEMP 2.0
- Strong ELD, dashcam and driver safety tools for on-road fleets
Watch out for- Equipment features are secondary to its trucking roots
- Quote-based pricing
#8
Hapn
Best for: Small and mid-size fleets that want published pricing
Visit gethapn.com
Starting price$10 per asset/month
Free planNo
Hapn is the only vendor here that tells you the price before you talk to sales. Per asset per month, it charges $10 for non-powered asset and vehicle tracking, $13 for equipment tracking with utilization and $18 for full equipment telematics with engine data. OEM data integration costs $4 per machine.
That makes budgeting easy. Say you have 40 machines with OEM feeds and 60 trailers and attachments. You can price that on a napkin, which you can't do with most competitors. Hapn also targets rental companies and publishes material on utilization tracking and off-rent status.
The trade-off is size and track record. Hapn is a smaller company, so ask directly about support coverage, hardware warranty and contract length. Look for reviews from fleets your size before you commit.
What we like- Published per-asset pricing tiers
- Separate $4 per month tier for OEM data integration
- Covers non-powered assets, vehicles and heavy equipment on one platform
Watch out for- Smaller vendor with less name recognition
- Fewer independent reviews than the market leaders
#9GPS Insight

GPS Insight serves construction, utility, government and field service fleets, and its equipment tracking centers on run time. Accurate engine hours matter most to companies that bill customers by usage or need clean hours for job costing. That is where GPS Insight focuses.
You get a good choice of devices. Battery, solar and wired options let you track generators, trailers and heavy machinery, and long-life battery units cover assets with no power source. It also integrates with AI dashcams for the vehicle side.
The catch is that GPS Insight is a general fleet platform first. Its maintenance, rental management and attachment tracking are lighter than Clue's or Tenna's. It suits buyers who mainly need location, hours and theft alerts.
What we like- Battery, solar and wired trackers, some rated for up to 10 years of battery life
- Run-hour data supports usage-based billing
- Alerts for unauthorized movement and off-hours use
Watch out for- Pricing is quote-based
- Less construction-specific depth than dedicated equipment platforms
How we chose
We started with vendors that sell directly to construction, rental and heavy equipment fleets, and dropped any that only track on-road vehicles. For each remaining tool, we read the vendor's product pages, pricing pages and documentation, and checked its OEM and AEMP integration claims. We also read public reviews on G2, Capterra and Reddit, looking for repeated complaints about contracts, hardware and support.
We then judged fit for small and mid-size US contractors. We looked at whether pricing is published, how many asset types the platform covers, how it handles older machines without factory telematics, and what it connects to (ERP, job costing, maintenance). We did not test the tools ourselves. We only list prices we could confirm on the vendor's own site. Everything else is marked See website.
What to check before you sign
Count your assets by type first
Split your fleet into three groups: machines with factory telematics, powered equipment without it, and non-powered assets like attachments and trailers. Machines with OEM telematics may only need a data integration fee, while the other two groups need trackers. That split changes your quote more than any feature list.
Ask how OEM data is handled
AEMP feeds from Deere, Cat, Komatsu and Volvo are common, but how often they update and which data they include varies. For each brand you own, ask whether the platform shows fault codes and fuel, or only location and hours.
Get contract terms in writing
Many telematics vendors push multi-year agreements that include hardware. Confirm the contract length, what happens to the hardware if you cancel, any caps on renewal prices, and whether you can export your full asset history as a CSV or through an API.
Match the tool to your back office
If you run HCSS, its integrations save more time than anything else here. If your accounting or ERP system is from another vendor, ask for a live demo of that exact integration, not just a logo on a slide.
Watch the newcomers
Geotab announced Geotab Build at CONEXPO in March 2026. It is meant to bring on-road vehicles, construction machinery and tools into one platform, with general availability planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. If you already use Geotab for trucks, ask your reseller about timing before you switch platforms.
Frequently asked questions
What is fleet visibility software for heavy equipment?
It is software that shows where every machine is, whether it is running and how many hours it has logged. It usually gets this data from GPS trackers and OEM telematics feeds. Most platforms add geofences, theft alerts, utilization reports and maintenance reminders based on engine hours.
How much does heavy equipment tracking cost?
Most vendors quote on request. Hapn is the exception: it lists rates from $10 per asset per month for basic tracking up to $18 for full equipment telematics, plus $4 for OEM data integration. With most providers, expect hardware and installation costs on top of the software fees.
Do I need trackers if my machines already have OEM telematics?
For newer machines, often not. Platforms such as HCSS, Motive and Tenna pull data from manufacturers like Deere, Cat, Komatsu and Volvo through AEMP integrations. You only need trackers for older machines, non-powered assets and brands without a supported feed.
Can one platform track tools and attachments too?
Yes, several can. Tenna, Trackunit and Samsara offer Bluetooth tags or unpowered trackers for attachments and small equipment. T3 integrates with Milwaukee One-Key for power tools.
How long does setup take?
OEM integrations can be connected quickly once you share your equipment list and approve data sharing. Installing aftermarket trackers takes longer because each machine has to be scheduled around job demands. Plan to roll out in phases, starting with your most valuable or most rented assets.
