The best sustainability reporting software

A major customer sends a 200-question sustainability questionnaire. An investor asks for your Scope 3 numbers. A regulator sets a disclosure deadline. Your data lives in spreadsheets, inboxes and three different systems, and the answers need audit trails. Sustainability reporting software exists for exactly this moment: one place to collect ESG data, calculate emissions, map frameworks and produce reports you can defend. These nine platforms are the ones companies actually buy.

Carbon accounting vs. ESG reporting vs. supplier ratings: buy the right category

These tools solve three different problems. Carbon accounting platforms (Persefoni, Watershed, Normative) measure greenhouse gas emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 and produce audit-ready footprints. ESG reporting platforms (Workiva, Novisto, Quentic, Position Green) collect data across environmental, social and governance topics and map it to frameworks like CSRD, GRI and SASB.

Supplier rating platforms (EcoVadis) assess your value chain rather than your own operations. Sphera spans EHS, operational risk and sustainability for industrial companies. Many companies need two of these, not one: a carbon tool plus a reporting platform is the common pairing. Define which problem is urgent before shortlisting.

#1

Workiva

Best for: Companies whose sustainability reporting must satisfy auditors and CFOs
Visit workiva.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)
Free planDemo
Workiva homepage

Workiva approaches sustainability from the finance side: the same platform that handles SEC reporting and SOX compliance now manages carbon accounting, double materiality assessments, framework mapping and disclosure drafting, with every number traceable and linked. For the CFO who needs ESG data with the same controls as financial data, that lineage matters.

It is an enterprise purchase with enterprise implementation. But when your sustainability report gets audited like your 10-K, Workiva's audit-ready architecture is the point.

What we like
  • The only platform here that unifies financial reporting, audit, risk and sustainability: numbers link across filings
  • Purpose-built for regulated, assured disclosures
  • Trusted by 6,700+ companies
Watch out for
  • Enterprise pricing and implementation
  • The breadth means it is more platform than point solution
  • Smaller companies will find it heavy
#2

Persefoni

Best for: Assurance-grade carbon footprints across Scopes 1, 2 and 3
Visit persefoni.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)
Free planDemo
Persefoni homepage

Persefoni is the carbon accountant's platform: Scope 1, 2 and 3 footprints built for assurance, with disclosure support for CSRD, California rules, TCFD, SASB and PCAF (financed emissions). Persefoni AI adds anomaly detection and a copilot for carbon accounting questions. It is recognized as a leader in the category by analysts.

If your need is broader ESG reporting rather than carbon depth, pair it with a reporting platform. But for the company whose disclosure hinges on defensible emissions numbers, Persefoni's rigor is the selling point.

What we like
  • Deep carbon accounting rigor: every method aligned to trusted standards, built for regulatory assurance
  • Strong Scope 3 capabilities from spend-based estimates to actuals
  • Pro and Advanced tiers for different complexities
Watch out for
  • Carbon-focused rather than full ESG
  • Enterprise pricing
  • The depth assumes a serious sustainability function
#3

Watershed

Best for: Fast, AI-accelerated carbon measurement and ESG reporting
Visit watershed.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)
Free planDemo
Watershed homepage

Watershed's pitch is speed with control: AI agents clean messy data, map emission factors and draft reports, while human review and transparent calculations keep auditors comfortable. It covers measurement, reporting and reduction planning, with deep climate data resources behind it.

The platform moves fast and prices like an enterprise tool. For the sustainability team under deadline pressure that needs credible numbers quickly, Watershed's automation is compelling.

What we like
  • AI agents accelerate data cleaning, mapping and report drafting without sacrificing controls
  • Strong analyst recognition (Forrester and Verdantix leaders)
  • 4.1Gt emissions under management signals scale
Watch out for
  • Enterprise pricing
  • The AI-forward positioning needs validation against your audit requirements
  • Newer than some competitors in the space
#4

EcoVadis

Best for: Rating and monitoring supplier sustainability performance
Visit ecovadis.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)
Free planNo
EcoVadis homepage

EcoVadis solves the supply-chain problem: instead of every buyer sending its own questionnaire, suppliers complete one standardized assessment covering environment, labor, ethics and sustainable procurement, verified by analysts and AI. Buyers get comparable scorecards; suppliers share one rating with all customers.

It does not replace your own carbon or ESG reporting. But if customers keep asking for your sustainability credentials, or you need to assess hundreds of suppliers, EcoVadis is the network everyone already uses.

What we like
  • The global standard for supplier sustainability ratings: 175,000+ companies rated across 180+ countries
  • One assessment shared across your customer network
  • AI plus 500+ analyst reviews for credibility
Watch out for
  • It rates suppliers rather than running your own reporting
  • Assessed companies pay for ratings
  • The questionnaire process takes effort for suppliers
#5

Novisto

Best for: End-to-end ESG data, carbon, risk and performance management
Visit novisto.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)

Novisto homepage

Novisto brings balance-sheet rigor to sustainability: centralize ESG data collection, automate carbon accounting across all scopes, manage climate and value-chain risk, and turn it all into board-ready performance insights. Reporting across 34 frameworks from one data map is a genuine differentiator, backed by Novisto AI and in-house ESG advisors.

It is an enterprise platform with enterprise onboarding. For the global company juggling multiple frameworks and wanting one defensible data foundation, Novisto's completeness stands out.

What we like
  • Complete suite: ESG data collection, carbon accounting, risk management and performance analytics in one
  • Map data once and report across 34 frameworks
  • Traceable, audit-ready numbers with in-house advisory
Watch out for
  • Enterprise positioning and pricing
  • The breadth requires implementation effort
  • Less known than Workiva in the US market
#6

Sphera

Best for: Industrial companies unifying EHS, risk and sustainability
Visit sphera.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)
Free planDemo
Sphera homepage

Sphera is the industrial giant's platform: environment, health, safety, operational risk, life cycle assessment and sustainability managed together, on proprietary data built over decades. Energy, chemical and manufacturing leaders use it to connect safety, risk and sustainability in one operational view.

Services companies will find it heavy. But for the industrial enterprise where EHS, risk and ESG cannot live in separate systems, Sphera's unified operational intelligence is unmatched.

What we like
  • Unique breadth: operational risk, EHS, product stewardship, LCA and sustainability in one platform
  • Deep industry expertise in energy, chemicals and manufacturing
  • Strong carbon management and Scope 3 capabilities
Watch out for
  • Enterprise complexity and pricing
  • The industrial focus is less relevant to services companies
  • Implementations are significant projects
#7

Quentic (formerly FigBytes)

Best for: European companies combining EHS and sustainability management
Visit figbytes.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)
Free planDemo
Quentic (formerly FigBytes) homepage

Quentic (which now includes FigBytes) offers modular EHS and sustainability software: combine modules for health and safety, environmental management, incidents, audits, legal compliance and sustainability reporting. With 1,200+ customers and Verdantix leadership recognition in both EHS and ESG reporting, it is a European heavyweight.

Pure sustainability teams may find the EHS breadth unnecessary. But for the European industrial or mid-market company that needs safety, environment and ESG in one system, Quentic's modular approach fits.

What we like
  • Unified EHS and sustainability modules: safety, environment, incidents, audits and ESG reporting in one
  • Strong European footprint with German hosting
  • Recognized leader in EHS and ESG reporting software
Watch out for
  • The FigBytes acquisition means checking the current product lineup
  • EHS depth exceeds what pure sustainability teams need
  • Enterprise pricing
#8

Position Green (formerly Greenomy)

Best for: EU companies navigating CSRD and ESG compliance
Visit greenomy.io
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)
Free planDemo
Position Green (formerly Greenomy) homepage

Position Green (now including Greenomy) targets the European compliance wave: a single sustainability data hub feeding CSRD reporting, carbon accounting, supply chain management and investor-grade disclosures, kept current by European sustainability experts. The modular design lets companies start with compliance and grow into performance.

Non-European companies have less reason to choose it. But for the EU company facing CSRD deadlines, a platform built around European regulation is the pragmatic choice.

What we like
  • Built for European regulation: CSRD-ready ESG data collection, carbon management and reporting
  • Modular design that scales with your maturity
  • 1,000+ companies onboard
Watch out for
  • The Greenomy transition means verifying the current offering
  • EU regulatory focus is less relevant outside Europe
  • Enterprise pricing
#9

Normative

Best for: Companies wanting carbon accounting with a built-in expert
Visit normative.io
Starting priceSee website (quote-based)
Free planDemo
Normative homepage

Normative's differentiator is human: every account gets a named climate strategy advisor who knows your data and methodology, handling the questions that usually require expensive consultants. Underneath, the engine covers Scopes 1-3 with traceable, GHG Protocol-aligned calculations verified by TÜV SÜD.

It is a carbon platform, not a full ESG suite. But for the company that wants audit-ready emissions numbers plus an expert on call, Normative's advisor model is distinctive. Note that Normative and Greenly are joining forces, so confirm the current product structure.

What we like
  • Every account includes a named, GHG Protocol-certified Climate Strategy Advisor
  • 349,000+ verified emission factors with TÜV SÜD-verified methodology
  • 100% success rate on SBTi submissions claimed
Watch out for
  • Carbon-focused rather than full ESG
  • The Greenly merger means watching how the combined offering evolves
  • Enterprise pricing

How we chose

We selected established sustainability software vendors with real enterprise adoption, covering carbon accounting, ESG reporting, supplier ratings and EHS. For each we opened the vendor's site and confirmed the product is current. Two transitions to note: FigBytes is now part of Quentic, and Greenomy is now part of Position Green; we list the current brands and mention the former names once. Pricing in this category is quote-based, so we wrote "See website" throughout.

Start with the framework, not the software

Before demoing anything, list the frameworks and regulations you must satisfy: CSRD, California SB 253/SB 261, SEC climate rules, GRI, SASB, TCFD, CDP, or customer questionnaires. Each platform maps to frameworks differently, and the wrong choice means manual workarounds for your most important disclosure.

Then assess your data reality: do you have utility bills and spend data organized, or is everything in inboxes? Carbon platforms need activity data; reporting platforms need topic owners across departments. The companies that struggle most with these tools are not the ones with the wrong software but the ones that bought software before assigning data owners. Get the framework list and the data owners first; the platform choice gets much easier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sustainability reporting software?

Workiva for audit-grade reporting tied to finance; Persefoni or Watershed for carbon accounting depth; Novisto for end-to-end ESG, carbon and risk; EcoVadis for supplier ratings. The best choice depends on whether your urgent problem is emissions data, disclosure drafting, or supply chain assessment.

How much does sustainability reporting software cost?

All nine vendors price by quote, based on company size, entities, users and modules. Expect five to six figures annually for enterprise platforms, plus implementation. None publish list prices, so budget conversations start with a demo and scoping call.

What is the difference between carbon accounting and ESG reporting software?

Carbon accounting (Persefoni, Watershed, Normative) measures greenhouse gas emissions across Scopes 1-3. ESG reporting (Workiva, Novisto, Quentic, Position Green) covers the full environmental, social and governance spectrum and maps data to disclosure frameworks. Many companies need both.

Which software is best for CSRD compliance?

Workiva, Novisto, Quentic and Position Green all support CSRD reporting with double materiality assessments and framework mapping. Position Green is built specifically around European regulation. Confirm CSRD module depth in demos, since implementations vary.

What happened to FigBytes and Greenomy?

FigBytes is now part of Quentic, the European EHS and sustainability software provider. Greenomy is now part of Position Green. Both combinations aim to offer broader ESG and carbon management platforms; verify the current product lineup when evaluating.

Do I need EcoVadis if I have carbon accounting software?

They solve different problems. Carbon software measures your own emissions; EcoVadis rates your suppliers' (or your company's) sustainability performance for buyers and customers. Companies often use both: carbon tools for their footprint, EcoVadis for supply chain credentials.
