How we make this list: we compare pricing pages, product documentation and public user reviews. Ratings come from G2, Capterra or Trustpilot, with the date we checked them.
Key takeaways
- The cheapest credible option for a German company is the DNK platform, which is free of charge and covers the voluntary VSME report, but at the moment it works in German only.
- Paid tools built for small companies now start around €900 to €1,000 a year (ESG Lift from €890, Greener Ahead from €995), which is far below the monthly fees of enterprise suites.
- Most low-cost tools target the EFRAG voluntary standard (VSME, now called the Voluntary Standard or VS), not full CSRD with double materiality. If a customer or law demands full ESRS reporting, budget for a bigger platform.
- Pricing models differ: some tools charge a flat annual fee per company, one charges by headcount band, and the industrial-focused ones only quote on request.
- A free Excel template from EFRAG or a €699 Word template can be enough for a first report. Software earns its fee when you report every year, share the work across people, or need a CO2 calculation.

The best low-cost ESG reporting software for Germany
Starting priceFree
Free planYes
The DNK platform is the first place a German company with a tight budget should look. It is a free tool from the German Sustainability Code, financed with federal support, and it walks you through the voluntary standard module by module. A separate module exists for companies that fall under mandatory CSRD reporting.
What stands out is the price and the fact that it is an official channel. The platform launched in early 2025, and the DNK reported more than 3,000 registered companies in the first half of that year. You answer questions in a fixed order, so there is little to configure.
The catch is scope. The interface is in German, which matters if your finance or sustainability lead works in English, and you should not expect the supplier portals, ERP connections or carbon calculators that paid vendors sell. Treat it as a reporting form, not a data platform. If your report stays small and you can handle German, it is hard to beat.
What we like- No cost at all
- Backed by the German federal government
- Step-by-step guidance through the data points
Watch out for- Currently German-language only
- Fewer collaboration and CO2 features than paid tools
#2
ESG Lift
Best for: Small and mid-sized firms that want a fixed yearly price and German hosting
Visit esglift.com
Starting price€890 per year for 11 to 50 employees, excl. VAT
Free planNo
ESG Lift sells a simple package: the voluntary standard modules, a hybrid CO2 calculator, an AI writing assistant and PDF export. The price depends on company size rather than seats. On the pricing page, the 11 to 50 employee band costs €890 a year (about €74 a month, billed annually), and the 51 to 1,000 employee band costs €1,590 a year, both excluding VAT.
It suits owner-managed manufacturers, trade firms and service companies that received a first supplier questionnaire and want one clean report without hiring a consultant. The vendor also offers an optional onboarding package of €900 for three consulting hours, which is worth considering if nobody on your team has seen the standard before.
The honest weakness is the lack of a free plan or a long trial that I could confirm, so you may commit to an annual subscription before you know how well it fits. Check the contract terms and the data export format during the sales conversation. The smallest firms also get no listed price.
What we like- Published prices by headcount band
- Includes a CO2 calculator for Scopes 1, 2 and 3
- Hosted in Germany
Watch out for- Micro-companies (1 to 10 employees) must request a quote
- No free tier
#3
Greener Ahead
Best for: Companies that need VSME reporting and carbon accounting from one tool
Visit greenerahead.com
Starting price€995 per year (Sustainability Reporting)
Free planFree trial (14 days)
Greener Ahead is a newer vendor that publishes every price on its site. Sustainability Reporting costs €995 a year (about €83 a month), and Carbon accounting costs €1,495 a year. The 14-day trial gives you the full product with no card and no demo call, and your data stays readable when the trial ends instead of being deleted.
The per-company price with unlimited users is the main selling point. Colleagues and suppliers can answer data requests without creating an account, and the interface offers seven languages. That helps when HR, facilities and finance each hold a piece of the data.
Plan carefully if you need the numbers behind your climate disclosures. The reporting plan covers the disclosures, but full Scope 1, 2 and 3 accounting sits in the more expensive plan, so a realistic budget is closer to €1,500 than €995 for many buyers. I also found little public track record beyond the vendor's own site, so check references before you commit.
What we like- Unlimited users with no per-seat pricing
- All Basic and Comprehensive VSME datapoints
- Trial includes everything without a sales call
Watch out for- Carbon accounting is a separate, higher-priced plan
- After the trial the account becomes read-only until you pay
#4
esg2go
Best for: Small DACH companies that also need an ESG rating for customer requests
Visit esg2go.org
Starting priceCHF 550 per year (Light+)
Free planNo
esg2go is built around the rating questionnaires that large buyers send to suppliers. The Light plan (CHF 300 a year) covers the rating only. Light+ (CHF 550 a year) adds the CO2 calculator with a reduction path, GRI reporting and VSME reporting. Professional (CHF 750 a year) includes 1.75 hours of advice per license from a professional you choose.
It fits a German or Austrian supplier whose customers ask for a rating plus a standard report, and who wants to pay once a year without a sales process. An add-on for EcoVadis preparation costs CHF 645.
Two things to weigh. Invoices in francs add a small exchange-rate step for a German company, and phone support beyond the included hours is billed per minute (CHF 3.00). It is also less of a data platform than the others, so teams with several sites and many contributors may outgrow it.
What we like- Rating, CO2 calculator and VSME reporting in one low annual fee
- Phone advice available
- Adviser hours in the Professional plan
Watch out for- Priced in Swiss francs
- The cheapest tier covers rating only, not reporting
#5
ExecutESG
Best for: Companies that want to test a VSME tool for two weeks before paying
Visit executesg.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planFree trial (14 days)
ExecutESG, part of ExecutGroup, offers tiered plans for the voluntary standard. VS (VSME) Core covers the Basic and Narrative modules, Scope 1 and 2 calculators, PDF and CSV export and one user seat. VS (VSME) Pro adds accounting software integration for Scope 3 and more narrative disclosures. Monthly and annual billing are both offered, with annual saving up to 17 percent.
A free five-minute readiness assessment shows how prepared you are before you register, which is a good way to test the waters. The platform also has a consultant partner program, useful if an adviser will manage reports for you.
The weakness is transparency at the time of writing: the prices on the pricing page did not render for me, so confirm the current figures before you shortlist it. Also check whether Scope 3 and extra seats force you into the Pro plan, because the single seat on Core can become a bottleneck.
What we like- 14-day trial on paid plans
- Free readiness assessment
- Export to PDF and CSV
Watch out for- Prices did not display on the pricing page I could read
- The entry plan has one user seat and Scope 1 and 2 only
Starting price$299 per year (Pro)
Free planYes
EcoDiligence takes a different angle. Instead of a long report, you maintain one ESG Passport and reuse it when customers send questionnaires. The Free plan includes one passport with PDF and QR output and limited bill parsing. Pro costs $299 a year and adds up to 10 passports, a VSME Comprehensive add-on and a pre-filled VSME digital template in Excel.
That makes it a cheap fit for a supplier that gets the same questions from five different customers, or for an adviser who manages a few small clients. Its own comparison page states openly that it is one of the products being compared, so read its claims with that in mind.
The limit is that clients of an adviser get no seats of their own, and emission factor profiles cover a set of dedicated countries rather than being tuned for Germany. It also bills in US dollars. Choose it if questionnaires are your main pain, not if you need a fully guided, audit-style report.
What we like- Free plan with one ESG Passport
- Low Pro price with a 30-day money-back guarantee
- One dataset reused across repeated requests
Watch out for- Built around questionnaires and passports rather than a full report workflow
- German-specific features are not documented
#7
Tanso
Best for: Manufacturers that need VSME data pulled from ERP systems
Visit tanso.de
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Tanso is the most industrial option here. Its VSME tool lets you define the report scope, collect data across sites and departments, map it to disclosures and export a report. Carbon data from the company carbon footprint module flows into the climate disclosures, and later you can switch on double materiality and ESRS data points without changing systems.
That growth path is the reason to consider it. A mid-sized manufacturer that expects its customers to push for more than VSME can start small and avoid re-entering data. Case studies on the vendor site are written for mechanical engineering and similar industries.
The price is the open question. Tanso does not publish prices on the page I read, so I cannot call it low-cost, and I list it for firms that may outgrow the cheaper tools. Ask for a written quote that names the modules, the number of sites and the contract length.
What we like- Collects data from ERP systems and a carbon footprint module
- Can grow into CSRD with the same data
- Export to DOCX and PDF
Watch out for- No public pricing
- Aimed at industrial companies, so it can be more than a small office business needs
How we chose
I built this list from public information, not hands-on testing. For each tool I read the vendor's pricing page or product page, checked what the plans include, and compared the claims with public reviews and independent comparison pages where they existed. I looked at German-market fit (language, hosting, VSME coverage), pricing model, free tiers, user limits and how clearly the vendor states prices.
A tool had to support the voluntary EFRAG standard and be affordable for a company with fewer than a few hundred employees. I left out products priced from several hundred euros a month and tools whose homepage or price I could not confirm. Prices change, so check the vendor's own page before you buy.
Know which standard you actually need
The voluntary standard is the heart of most small-company reporting. According to CSR Tools, it is in force as Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/1560 since 24 September 2026 and is open to companies not subject to mandatory CSRD reporting. The same source says that from financial year 2027, companies subject to CSRD cannot demand more information from value-chain partners with up to 1,000 employees than this standard covers. That is a strong argument for using it as your default answer to customer requests.
If you are directly in scope for CSRD, the tools above are probably not enough. The DNK platform has a separate module for mandatory reporters, and Tanso describes a path into ESRS, but you should confirm the details with the vendor.
Decide whether you need software at all
EFRAG offers a free Excel digital template for the standard, and CSR Tools sells a German and English Word template at €699 plus VAT. For a first report prepared by one person, either can be enough. Software starts to pay off when several colleagues contribute, when you need a CO2 calculation, or when you want to reuse last year's data.
Check the real cost
Compare more than the headline figure. Ask about VAT (German vendors quote prices excluding it), contract length, user limits, price increases at renewal, onboarding fees and whether CO2 accounting is included. Greener Ahead's split between reporting and carbon plans shows how a €995 tool can become a €2,490 bundle.
Test the data export
Your report is a record you will update each year. Before you commit, confirm you can export your data in PDF and Excel or CSV, and that you can move to another provider later. Also check data residency and a data processing agreement, which matter under GDPR.
Frequently asked questions
Is there free ESG reporting software for German companies?
Yes. The DNK platform is a free tool from the German Sustainability Code for creating reports under the voluntary standard, though it is currently available only in German. EcoDiligence also has a free plan, but it covers a single ESG Passport rather than a full report.
How much does low-cost ESG reporting software cost?
Among the vendors with public prices, plans start around €890 to €995 a year (ESG Lift and Greener Ahead) and CHF 550 a year (esg2go Light+). Adding carbon accounting or consulting raises the total, for example Greener Ahead's carbon plan at €1,495 a year or ESG Lift's €900 onboarding package.
Do small German companies have to report under CSRD?
Not automatically. The voluntary standard exists for companies outside mandatory CSRD scope, and many small firms use it to answer customer, bank and tender requests. Check your own legal status with an adviser, because the rules have been changing.
Can I just use a template instead of software?
For a first report, often yes. EFRAG's Excel template is free, and a Word template costs €699 plus VAT from CSR Tools. You maintain the file yourself each year, so software is better if several people contribute or you need calculations.
What is the difference between VSME and the Voluntary Standard (VS)?
They are the same idea under a new name. EFRAG's VSME has become the Voluntary Standard, and several vendors say they are renaming their modules. Ask your vendor how quickly its tool follows the updated version.
