Best Audit Software in 2026: 9 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • In March 2026, the biggest name in audit software changed its name: AuditBoard rebranded to Optro, positioning as an AI-powered connected risk platform. The product is the same one used by over half the Fortune 500.
  • Audit software pricing is almost entirely quote-based and modular: mid-market deployments typically run $75,000-250,000 a year, large SOX programs $400,000-600,000. Map your modules before buying.
  • Optro, Workiva, TeamMate+, ServiceNow and Archer are the enterprise core for SOX, internal audit and GRC. LogicGate and MetricStream cover flexible GRC at different price points.
  • Trullion (from $3,000/year) is the AI-native newcomer for financial audit automation with a free trial and published pricing, rare in this category.
  • Drata covers the compliance-automation end: SOC 2 and framework readiness for companies heading toward their first audit.

The best audit software

Audit software runs the internal audit lifecycle: risk assessment, audit planning, fieldwork, workpapers, issue tracking and reporting, plus SOX controls testing and GRC. Nine tools below, from enterprise platforms to AI newcomers.

#1

Optro (formerly AuditBoard)

Best for: Mid-to-large enterprises running SOX and internal audit
Visit auditboard.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Optro (formerly AuditBoard) homepage

Optro is AuditBoard under its 2026 name, and the rebrand reflects where the product went: an AI-powered connected risk platform linking audit, risk, compliance and ESG with workpapers that update across modules automatically. For SOX Section 404 programs, it remains the default choice, named a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for GRC.

Pricing is custom and negotiated by modules, which is both the strength and the warning: buy only the modules you need, because costs scale with breadth. Smaller teams find the price and complexity barriers real. For mid-to-large enterprises wanting one audit and risk system, it is the benchmark everything else is measured against.

What we like
  • The market standard: used by over half the Fortune 500
  • Connected audit, risk, ESG and compliance in one platform
  • Strong executive dashboards and reporting
Watch out for
  • Custom modular pricing that stings as modules add up
  • Full value needs a dedicated admin
  • Complexity is overkill for small teams
#2

Workiva

Best for: Connecting audit work to financial reporting
Visit workiva.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Workiva homepage

Workiva's differentiator is connection: instead of audit living in one system and financial reporting in another, both work from linked data with full lineage. For public companies where SOX testing, financial close and regulatory filings overlap, that eliminates the reconciliation work that eats audit teams alive.

It is priced and sold as an enterprise platform, with custom quotes and real implementations. Finance-led organizations get the most value; pure internal-audit departments sometimes find it finance-heavy. If your audit pain is the gap between audit evidence and reported numbers, Workiva closes it.

What we like
  • Unique connected-reporting model: audit, financials and ESG draw from the same data
  • Strong for SOX and SEC reporting teams
  • Excellent data lineage
Watch out for
  • Quote-based enterprise pricing
  • Implementation needs planning
  • Strongest for finance-led teams rather than pure audit shops
#3

TeamMate+

Best for: Traditional internal audit departments that want proven workflows
Visit wolterskluwer.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
TeamMate+ homepage

TeamMate+ is the auditor's audit tool: built specifically for internal audit departments to manage risk assessments, audit plans, resource scheduling, time tracking and workpapers. It does not try to be a full GRC suite, and that focus is the appeal for teams that want audit done well rather than everything done adequately.

Wolters Kluwer ownership brings stability and integration with the broader tax and compliance portfolio. The interface shows its heritage, and GRC ambitions need a different platform. For chief audit executives who want a system their auditors will actually use, TeamMate+ remains the traditional pick.

What we like
  • Purpose-built for internal audit: risk assessment, scheduling, time capture and workpapers
  • Long track record with audit departments
  • Wolters Kluwer backing
Watch out for
  • Quote-based pricing
  • Interface feels traditional next to newer platforms
  • Less GRC breadth than Optro or Archer
#4

ServiceNow Integrated Risk Management

Best for: Enterprises already standardized on ServiceNow
Visit servicenow.com

Free planNo

ServiceNow IRM makes sense for one buyer: the enterprise already on ServiceNow. Then audit, risk and compliance inherit the platform's workflow engine, CMDB data and integrations, and control testing connects naturally to IT operations. For ServiceNow shops, it is the path of least resistance to automated control testing.

As a standalone audit purchase it rarely wins: dedicated platforms go deeper on audit methodology. But inside a ServiceNow estate, the integration value compounds fast. Evaluate it with your ServiceNow team, not as an isolated audit decision.

What we like
  • Audit and risk ride on the ServiceNow platform IT already runs
  • Strong workflow engine and integrations
  • Unified with ITSM and security operations
Watch out for
  • Quote-based enterprise pricing
  • Full value needs ServiceNow commitment
  • Audit-specific depth trails dedicated platforms
#5

Archer

Best for: Highly regulated industries with complex risk programs
Visit archerirm.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Archer homepage

Archer is the old guard of GRC: the platform the biggest banks, insurers and energy companies built their risk programs on. Its depth in regulatory content, risk quantification and complex organizational structures remains unmatched for highly regulated industries.

The trade-offs are well known: heavy implementations, enterprise pricing, and a product that moves slower than LogicGate or Optro. For organizations where regulators effectively choose the tooling, Archer's track record is the argument. For everyone else, newer platforms deliver more agility per dollar.

What we like
  • Deep GRC heritage for banking, energy and healthcare
  • Strong risk quantification and regulatory content
  • Proven at the largest enterprise scale
Watch out for
  • Quote-based enterprise pricing
  • Implementations are heavy
  • Interface and pace of innovation trail newer rivals
#6

LogicGate Risk Cloud

Best for: Business users who want to build their own risk workflows
Visit logicgate.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
LogicGate Risk Cloud homepage

LogicGate's Risk Cloud is the agile GRC platform: a drag-and-drop builder with prebuilt applications for risk, controls, third-party risk and compliance that business users configure themselves. Deployment is measured in weeks, and reviewers praise the ease of use.

Pricing is quote-based with reported entry points around $1,000+ a year, which undercuts the enterprise giants significantly. The limits show at scale: reporting depth and the heaviest risk programs still belong to MetricStream or Archer. For mid-market companies and business-led risk teams, it is the sweet spot.

What we like
  • No-code builder lets risk teams create apps without IT
  • Prebuilt content for common frameworks
  • High user satisfaction (4.6/5) and fast deployment
Watch out for
  • Quote-based pricing (reported from ~$1,000+ annually)
  • Standalone reporting feels thin
  • Scales less far than MetricStream or Archer
#7

Trullion

Best for: AI-automated lease accounting and financial audit workflows
Visit trullion.com
Starting priceFrom $3,000/year
Free planFree trial
Trullion homepage

Trullion is the AI-native newcomer: it reads PDF and Excel contracts, extracts lease and revenue terms, and turns them into auditable journal entries and compliance workflows for ASC 842, IFRS 16 and ASC 606. Accounting teams and auditors get a single source of truth with full audit trails.

At $3,000 a year with a free trial, it is two orders of magnitude cheaper than enterprise audit platforms, because it solves a narrower problem brilliantly rather than everything adequately. It will not run your SOX program. But for financial audit automation and lease accounting, it is the most interesting new product in the category.

What we like
  • Published pricing from $3,000/year with a free trial, unique here
  • AI extracts data from contracts into auditable workflows
  • Clean interface, fast onboarding
Watch out for
  • Focused on accounting workflows (leases, revenue recognition) rather than full internal audit
  • Smaller vendor with a narrower install base
#8

MetricStream

Best for: Massive enterprises with AI-driven risk programs
Visit metricstream.com
Starting priceFrom $75,000/year
Free planNo

MetricStream is the maximum-strength option: AI-driven GRC with predictive analytics across interconnected risk programs, built for the world's largest regulated companies. When the risk program spans dozens of entities and regulators, MetricStream's federated model is designed exactly for that.

The $75,000-a-year starting point and quote-based enterprise pricing put it firmly at the top of the market. Implementations need specialized skills and real timelines. It competes with Archer at the high end and wins on AI and analytics depth. Mid-market buyers should not be here.

What we like
  • The heaviest GRC platform: AI, predictive analytics and federated data models
  • Built for banking, energy and healthcare at global scale
  • Deep risk insight
Watch out for
  • $75,000/year starting price, quote-based above that
  • Long implementations needing specialists
  • Overkill below true enterprise scale
#9

Drata

Best for: Growing companies automating their first compliance audits
Visit drata.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Drata homepage

Drata sits at the compliance end of the category: it automates the evidence collection, control monitoring and readiness work for SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA and other frameworks, connecting to your cloud stack to monitor controls continuously. For startups and scale-ups facing their first customer security review, it compresses months of work into weeks.

It is not internal audit software in the traditional sense: no audit planning, workpapers or SOX methodology. Think of it as the on-ramp: Drata gets you audit-ready, and the platforms above run the audit program once you have one. Many companies use both at different stages.

What we like
  • Continuous compliance monitoring across 20+ frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA)
  • Automated evidence collection from your tech stack
  • Auditor network built in
Watch out for
  • Quote-based pricing
  • Focused on compliance automation rather than internal audit methodology
  • Best before, not instead of, a real audit function

How we chose

We separated the category's three jobs: internal audit and SOX management, GRC platforms, and compliance automation, because buyers confuse them constantly. Every price above comes from the vendor or from 2026 comparisons that verified pricing against vendor sources; where pricing is quote-based we say so plainly instead of inventing numbers. We read G2, analyst coverage and practitioner communities, weighting SOX depth, implementation reality and pricing-model transparency. We used current 2026 names throughout, including the AuditBoard-to-Optro rebrand, so readers are not confused by outdated references.

SOX, internal audit or compliance: name the job first

These three jobs buy different software. SOX compliance (Section 404 controls testing for public companies) needs Optro, Workiva, or ServiceNow: control libraries, testing workflows, deficiency tracking and auditor-ready evidence. Internal audit needs audit planning, fieldwork, workpapers and issue management: Optro, TeamMate+, or Archer.

Compliance automation (SOC 2, ISO 27001 readiness) needs Drata or similar: continuous control monitoring and evidence collection, not audit methodology. Buying a SOX platform for SOC 2 readiness wastes six figures; buying Drata for a SOX program fails the external auditor. Name the job, then shortlist. Most companies over 500 employees eventually need two of the three.

The module trap: how audit software pricing really works

Enterprise audit platforms price by module: SOX, internal audit, ERM, third-party risk, ESG, each licensed separately. The base quote looks reasonable; the full program costs two to three times more. Mid-market deployments land at $75,000-250,000 a year; large public companies pay $400,000-600,000.

Defend against the trap with a module map: list the use cases you will run in year one, price exactly those, and get the cost of year-two modules in writing. Negotiate the renewal cap upfront, because year-three renewals are where vendors recover discounts. And budget implementation separately: it is never included, and it often runs 50-100% of the first-year license. The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest three-year cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is audit management software?

Software that runs the internal audit lifecycle: risk assessment, audit planning, fieldwork and workpapers, issue tracking, and reporting, plus SOX controls testing for public companies. It replaces the spreadsheets, shared drives and email threads that audit teams traditionally drown in.

How much does audit management software cost?

Mid-market deployments typically run $75,000-250,000 a year; large SOX programs $400,000-600,000. Pricing is modular and quote-based at the enterprise tier. The exceptions: Trullion from $3,000/year for AI audit automation, and MetricStream from $75,000/year at the high end. Implementation is usually separate.

What happened to AuditBoard?

AuditBoard rebranded to Optro in March 2026, positioning as an AI-powered connected risk platform. The product is unchanged: the same SOX, internal audit and GRC platform used by over half the Fortune 500. You will see both names during the transition; they refer to the same company.

What is the best audit software for a small audit team?

LogicGate Risk Cloud for flexible no-code GRC at a lower entry price; Trullion ($3,000/year) for AI-driven financial audit automation; Drata for compliance automation ahead of a first SOC 2. The enterprise platforms (Optro, Archer, MetricStream) are overkill below mid-market scale.

Workiva versus Optro: which is better for SOX?

Optro is the deeper pure audit and SOX platform with stronger audit methodology and workpapers. Workiva is stronger when audit must connect to financial reporting and SEC filings from the same data. SOX-first teams usually pick Optro; finance-led teams with reporting overlap pick Workiva.

Do we need audit software for SOX compliance?

Effectively yes, at any real scale. SOX Section 404 requires documented controls, testing, evidence and issue tracking that spreadsheets cannot sustain across hundreds of controls. Public and pre-IPO companies standardize on Optro, Workiva or ServiceNow for exactly this reason.
