Counts include emoji as single characters. This does not replicate platform-specific quirks like X's link shortening or weighted Unicode counting, treat it as a close estimate and confirm in the platform's own composer before publishing.

Every social platform enforces its own character limit, and checking one caption against eight different apps one at a time wastes time you do not have. Paste your text once into the box above and see instantly which platforms it fits, which ones it blows past, and by how much.

Character limits by platform

X allows 280 characters on free accounts, or up to 25,000 for paid Basic, Premium and Premium+ subscribers. Instagram captions can run to 2,200 characters. Facebook is the most permissive at 63,206 characters. LinkedIn posts allow up to 3,000 characters. Threads caps a standard post at 500 characters, with a separate 10,000-character text attachment available for longer writing. TikTok raised its caption limit to 4,000 characters. Pinterest allows 500 characters in a pin description. YouTube video descriptions allow up to 5,000 characters. These are the hard technical limits, the platform will not accept a post beyond them.

The technical limit is not what people actually read

Fitting under a platform's character limit is not the same as being read. Instagram truncates a caption in-feed at around 125 characters before showing "more." LinkedIn collapses a post at roughly 210 characters on desktop. Facebook shows about 477 characters before truncating. TikTok cuts captions off after roughly 100 to 150 characters. YouTube descriptions truncate around 150 characters before "Show more." Your hook, the reason someone stops scrolling, needs to land inside that visible preview window, well before you hit the technical ceiling this checker measures.

Writing once for many platforms

Teams repurposing one piece of content across channels often write to the tightest constraint first, X's 280 characters or Threads' 500, then expand for platforms with more room rather than writing eight separate versions from scratch. Use this checker as a first pass before you paste into each platform's own composer, since a caption that clears every limit here still needs a platform-specific hook to actually get read. If repurposing content across channels consistently is part of a bigger content operation you are trying to build, a free SEO audit is a good way to see where that content could also be earning organic search traffic.

FAQ

Social Media Character Limit Checker: questions, answered

What is the character limit for X (Twitter)?
Free X accounts are limited to 280 characters per post. Paid X subscribers on Basic, Premium or Premium+ get up to 25,000 characters, though most audiences still see only the free-tier length before a post gets cut off in a typical feed view.
What is the character limit for an Instagram caption?
Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters in a caption, but the feed only displays roughly the first 125 characters before truncating to a "more" link, so your hook needs to land well before the technical limit.
How long can a LinkedIn post be?
LinkedIn posts allow up to 3,000 characters, though only around the first 210 characters show on desktop before a "see more" prompt collapses the rest.
What is the character limit for Threads?
A standard Threads post allows 500 characters. Threads also lets you attach a separate text block of up to 10,000 characters for longer-form writing linked from the main post.
Does this tool count characters the same way each platform does?
This tool counts visible characters, including emoji as single characters. It does not replicate platform-specific quirks such as X's weighted counting for certain Unicode ranges or automatic link shortening, so treat results as a close estimate and always confirm against the platform's own composer before publishing.
