X counts characters differently than a plain text editor, which is why a post can look short and still get flagged as too long. This tool counts your post the way X actually does, treats every link as a fixed 23 characters no matter how long the real URL is, and can split a longer draft into a clean, numbered thread.

How X counts characters (and why links are different)

Ordinary letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation each count as one character toward your limit. Links are the exception: X runs every URL through its t.co shortener, and every shortened link counts as exactly 23 characters in the post limit, regardless of whether the original URL was 20 characters or 200. This calculator applies that same rule, so a post with a long link will not show an inflated count the way a plain character counter would.

Standard 280 versus Premium 25,000 characters

Free and most verified accounts are capped at 280 characters per post. X Premium and Premium+ subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters in a single post, though anything past the first couple of hundred characters gets collapsed behind a 'Show more' link in the feed. Switch the account type at the top of the tool to check your draft against the limit that actually applies to you.

Splitting a long post into a clean thread

When a draft runs over the limit, the thread splitter breaks it at word boundaries so no word gets cut mid-way, and reserves room in each post for a small '(1/4)' style counter so the numbering itself never pushes a post over the limit. Copy the result and paste each numbered post into X in order, or into a thread-scheduling tool that accepts pre-split text.

FAQ

X Character Counter: questions, answered

Why does my link count as 23 characters?
X automatically shortens every link posted through its interface using its t.co service, and every shortened link counts as exactly 23 characters against your post limit, no matter how long or short the original URL was. This tool replicates that rule so the count you see here matches what you will see when you actually post.
What is the X character limit?
Standard accounts, including most free and verified accounts, are limited to 280 characters per post. X Premium and Premium+ subscribers get a much higher limit of 25,000 characters. Use the account type selector at the top of the tool to check your draft against the correct limit.
Do emojis count as more than one character on X?
Some emojis and non-Latin characters can count as more than one unit depending on how they are encoded, and X's own counting rules treat certain Unicode ranges as double weight. This tool counts by Unicode character, which is accurate for the vast majority of text, but if you are sitting exactly on the limit with heavy emoji use, double check the live counter inside X before posting.
How does the thread splitter decide where to break?
It splits your text at word boundaries, so it never cuts a word in half, and it reserves a small amount of space in every post for the numbering itself, like '(2/5)', so adding the counter never pushes a post over the character limit.
Can I use this for LinkedIn or Threads posts instead?
Not accurately. The 23 character link rule is specific to X's t.co shortener; other platforms either do not shorten links at all or use different rules. For a general count without platform-specific link handling, use a plain character counter instead.
