Hashtags only help if the count and the mix are right. Too few and you miss reach, too many and you look spammy or, on Instagram, risk hitting a hard cap that stops your caption from saving at all. The counter above reads your caption, tells you the total and unique hashtag count, flags repeats, and checks it against Instagram's documented limit.

How many hashtags should you use

Instagram enforces a hard ceiling of 30 hashtags per post or comment; cross it and the save simply fails. Inside that ceiling, more is not automatically better. Most creators get their best reach from a tight set of 3 to 8 hashtags that actually describe the content, mixing one or two broad tags with several specific, less crowded ones. TikTok, X, Facebook and LinkedIn do not publish a hard hashtag cap, but hashtags still share space with your caption's character budget and a wall of tags reads as spam on every one of those platforms.

Total count versus unique count

The total count includes every hashtag in your text, repeats and all. The unique count treats #SEO and #seo as the same tag and only counts it once. When the two numbers do not match, you have a duplicate sitting in your caption, using up one of your limited slots without adding any extra reach. The tool lists every unique tag it found so you can scan for accidental repeats or typo'd versions of the same hashtag.

Hashtag placement: caption versus first comment

On Instagram, hashtags work the same whether they sit in the caption or in the first comment posted right after. Putting them in the caption is simpler; moving them to a comment keeps the caption itself short and readable for a human audience. Either way, paste the text into the counter above before you post to confirm you are inside the limit and free of duplicates.

FAQ

Hashtag Counter: questions, answered

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Instagram caps posts and comments at 30 hashtags each. Go over that and the caption or comment will simply fail to save, so the counter above flags it the moment you cross 30 on the Instagram setting.
Does this counter work for platforms other than Instagram?
Yes. Paste a caption written for any platform and it will count total and unique hashtags the same way. Instagram is the only platform with a documented hard cap of 30, so that is the only limit this tool enforces; for others it shows the count so you can judge against your own style.
Why is my total hashtag count different from the unique count?
Total counts every hashtag that appears, including repeats. Unique counts each hashtag once, ignoring case, so #SEO and #seo count as the same tag. If a caption repeats a tag by accident, the two numbers will not match, which is a quick way to spot duplicates.
Does the tool remove duplicate hashtags automatically?
No, it only counts and flags them. Duplicate or near-duplicate hashtags waste your limited slots without adding reach, so once you see the unique count is lower than the total, scan the list below and delete the repeats yourself.
Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
Either works for reach on Instagram; the algorithm treats both the same. Many creators use the first comment to keep the caption itself clean and readable, then drop the full hashtag set there instead. This counter works the same way no matter which one you paste.
Is this hashtag counter free to use?
Yes, completely free with no signup and no limit on how many times you run it. Paste your text, read the counts, and edit until you are happy.
