Line breaks are the invisible characters that push text onto a new line. They are helpful inside a document, but when you copy text out of a PDF, an email or a spreadsheet, you often inherit a break on every line. The result will not reflow into clean paragraphs. This tool strips those breaks the way you choose, then hands you tidy text you can paste anywhere.

How to remove line breaks

Paste your text into the box above and pick a mode. The tool does the rest live, so you never hit a submit button.

  1. Remove all line breaks. This joins every line into one continuous block using your separator, a single space by default. Set the separator to a comma, a pipe or nothing at all when you need a different join. Use this to unwrap text that arrived broken line by line.
  2. Remove only extra blank lines. This keeps one line break between paragraphs and deletes the doubled or tripled empty gaps in between. Pick it when the structure is fine but the spacing is messy.
  3. Trim each line. Strips leading and trailing spaces from every line, which clears the stray indents that paste in from email and PDF columns.
  4. Remove extra spaces. Collapses any run of two or more spaces down to one, so justified text stops leaving big gaps mid-sentence.

The stats line under the result tells you how many lines and characters you started with and how many characters remain, so you can see at a glance how much got cleaned.

When you need to strip line breaks

The most common case is pasting from a PDF. Reports, whitepapers and invoices store a hard break at the edge of each visual line, so the text lands chopped into fragments. Joining with a space rebuilds flowing sentences in seconds. The same happens with plain-text emails, code comments and anything copied out of a narrow column.

Cleaning copy for a CMS is the next big one. When you move a draft from a Google Doc or Word file into WordPress, Webflow or a headless editor, rogue breaks can create empty paragraphs and broken spacing that hurt readability and, by extension, your rankings. Tidy text in means clean HTML out. Data prep is the third: if you are pasting a column of values into a single field, or flattening a list into a comma-separated string, switching the separator turns line-broken data into exactly the format your spreadsheet or import needs.

Line breaks vs paragraph breaks

These two get confused, and the difference is what makes this tool useful. A line break is a single new line, one press of Enter, that moves text down without signaling a new idea. A paragraph break is a fuller gap, usually a blank line, that marks the end of one thought and the start of another. In editors and HTML, paragraph breaks become real structure your readers and search engines rely on.

That is why the two modes exist. Remove all line breaks ignores the distinction and flattens everything into one block, which is what you want when the breaks are pure noise. Remove only extra blank lines respects paragraphs and trims just the surplus gaps, which is what you want when the structure is correct but the spacing got sloppy. Choose by asking whether the breaks carry meaning or are simply in the way.

FAQ

Remove Line Breaks: questions, answered

How do I remove line breaks from text?
Paste your text into the tool above and pick a mode. Remove all line breaks joins every line into one continuous block using your chosen separator, usually a single space. Remove only extra blank lines keeps your paragraphs but collapses the empty gaps between them. The result updates as you type, so you can copy it straight out.
What is the difference between removing all line breaks and removing blank lines?
Removing all line breaks flattens the text into a single line or block with no hard returns at all. Removing only extra blank lines leaves one line break between paragraphs and deletes the doubled or tripled empty lines in between. Use the first to unwrap text, the second to tidy spacing while keeping structure.
Will this tool change or store my text?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with plain JavaScript. Nothing you paste is uploaded, logged or sent to a server, so it is safe for drafts, client copy or anything you would rather keep private.
Can I trim spaces and remove double spaces too?
Yes. Tick Trim each line to strip leading and trailing whitespace from every line, and tick Remove extra spaces to collapse runs of two or more spaces into one. Both options pair well with either mode when you are cleaning text pasted out of a PDF or email.
Why does text from a PDF have a line break on every line?
PDFs and many emails store a hard line break at the end of each visual line rather than at the end of each paragraph. When you paste that text it keeps those breaks, so it will not reflow. Removing all line breaks and joining with a space rebuilds clean, flowing sentences you can drop into a CMS or document.
