A keyword combiner mixes two or three lists of terms into every possible combination, also called a cartesian product. You supply the building blocks, such as a list of intent words (buy, cheap, best), a list of products (running shoes, trainers) and an optional modifier list (online, near me), and the tool returns every keyword those lists can form in order. This saves the slow, error-prone work of typing combinations by hand and is the fastest way to build out a seed list for keyword research or a paid search account.
In PPC, combiners are a staple for building ad group keyword lists at scale. Once you have the raw combinations, you wrap each one in the right match type so Google Ads knows how loosely to match. The tool can output all four common formats for you.
| Match type | Syntax | What it matches |
|---|---|---|
| Broad | running shoes | Related searches, synonyms and variations, the widest reach. |
| Phrase | "running shoes" | Searches that include the phrase meaning, in a sensible order. |
| Exact | [running shoes] | The term and very close variants only, the tightest control. |
| Modified broad | +running +shoes | A legacy format where each plus word must appear; still used in older exports. |
In SEO, the same combinations make a strong seed list to drop into a volume tool, so you can see which mixes people actually search for before you commit to them. They also help you spot content gaps and map terms to pages.
Combined keywords are research inputs, not a content plan. Spinning up hundreds of near-identical pages from raw combinations, one per permutation, is the classic doorway-page mistake that search engines treat as thin, low value content. Use the list to find real demand, then group similar terms and build one genuinely useful page per intent.
