How average position is really calculated

Multiply each query's ranking position by its impressions, add those products together, then divide by total impressions across all the queries. A page ranking position 3 for a query with 1,000 impressions and position 8 for a query with 500 impressions has an average position of (3 times 1,000, plus 8 times 500), divided by 1,500 total impressions, which works out to about 4.67, not the simple midpoint of 3 and 8.

This impression-weighted method is exactly how Google Search Console calculates the "Average Position" metric shown in its Performance report. Queries that generate more impressions pull the average toward their own position more strongly than low-impression queries do, which is why a page's average position can shift even when none of its individual rankings move, simply because the mix of impressions across queries changed.

Why a simple average of positions is misleading

Treating average position as a plain average of every ranking, adding up the positions and dividing by the count, ignores how much search demand each position actually represents. A page ranking position 1 for a high-volume query and position 20 for a near-zero-volume query would show a misleadingly poor "simple average" of about 10.5, when in reality almost all of its visible impressions are happening at position 1.

Weighting by impressions fixes that distortion by letting high-traffic queries count more heavily than low-traffic ones, which is a truer picture of where a page is actually showing up for the searches that matter.

FAQ

Average Position Calculator: questions, answered

What is average position in Google Search Console?
Average position is the impression-weighted mean ranking position of a page or query across all the searches Google Search Console recorded for it. It is calculated by multiplying each query's position by its impressions, summing those products, and dividing by total impressions, not by taking a simple average of the raw position numbers.
Why is average position impression-weighted instead of a simple average?
A simple average would let a query with almost no search volume count exactly as much as a query with thousands of impressions, which distorts the picture. Weighting by impressions means positions tied to more actual searches have proportionally more influence on the final average, giving a more accurate read on real visibility.
Can average position improve while impressions grow?
Yes, and it often does. As a page starts ranking for more, often lower-position, long-tail queries, total impressions can rise while the impression-weighted average position drifts slightly worse, simply because more of the newly captured impressions are coming from positions further down the results page rather than the page's original top rankings.
Is average position still a useful SEO metric?
It is useful as a trend indicator for a specific page or query over time, but it is a poor stand-alone success metric, since it says nothing about clicks, traffic value, or search intent. Most practitioners track it alongside impressions, clicks and CTR rather than judging performance on average position in isolation.
