Apple's two 15% rates aren't the same thing

Apple offers a 15% commission rate through two entirely separate mechanisms. The Small Business Program gives any qualifying developer 15% on every transaction from day one, regardless of purchase type. Separately, standard (non-program) developers automatically drop from 30% to 15% on a specific subscriber's auto-renewing subscription once that subscriber has remained subscribed for more than 12 consecutive months, a rule that applies subscriber by subscriber, not account-wide.

How the $1M Small Business Program threshold works

Developers who earned up to $1 million in App Store proceeds in the prior calendar year, plus brand-new developers, can enroll in the Small Business Program for the flat 15% rate. If a developer's proceeds cross $1 million during the current year, Apple applies the standard 30% rate for the remainder of that year, and re-qualification for 15% is possible the following year if proceeds fall back under the threshold.

What this calculator doesn't cover

This tool models Apple's standard worldwide commission structure only. It does not calculate the separate, often lower rates available to developers who adopt the EU's Digital Markets Act alternative business terms, which involve a different fee structure entirely, or any applicable taxes on the transaction.

FAQ

Apple App Store Fee Calculator: questions, answered

What is Apple's standard App Store commission?
30% on one-time purchases, in-app purchases, and the first 12 months of an auto-renewing subscription, for developers not enrolled in the Small Business Program.
How do I qualify for the 15% Small Business Program rate?
Developers who earned up to $1 million in App Store proceeds in the prior calendar year, along with new developers, can enroll in the Small Business Program to pay 15% on all transactions from day one.
Why does a subscription's commission change after one year?
Apple automatically reduces the commission on an individual subscriber's auto-renewing subscription from 30% to 15% once that subscriber has remained continuously subscribed for more than 12 months, as an incentive for developer retention.
Does the Small Business Program's 15% rate reset with a subscriber's second year?
No. The Small Business Program already charges 15% from the very first transaction, so there is no separate year-one versus year-two distinction for developers enrolled in it.
Are the rates the same in the EU?
Developers can opt into the EU's Digital Markets Act alternative business terms, which apply a different fee structure than the standard worldwide rates this calculator models.
