Top Investment Management Software in 2026: 9 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • Most advisory firms run one all-in-one platform (Orion, Black Diamond, Advyzon, Tamarac) or pair a portfolio system with analytics tools (Addepar, YCharts, Kwanti).
  • Pricing is almost entirely quote-based in this category. Kwanti is the only one here with a free 30-day trial published openly; none publish per-advisor prices except by demo.
  • Addepar fits firms with complex portfolios, alternatives and family-office clients; YCharts and Kwanti fit advisors who need research, proposals and client-facing visuals fast.
  • Nitrogen (formerly Riskalyze) is the risk-alignment and proposal specialist; AdvisorEngine is the digital client-experience pick inside the Franklin Templeton orbit.

The top investment management software

Month-end at a growing RIA follows the same script: performance reports to build, billing to run, trades to rebalance, and clients asking what their portfolios actually own. The software on this list decides whether that script takes a day or a week. These nine platforms cover the real market for advisory firms, from all-in-one operating systems to specialized analytics tools.

#1

Orion Advisor Solutions

Best for: RIAs that want portfolio accounting, CRM and trading in one contract
Visit orion.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo
Orion Advisor Solutions homepage

Orion is the closest thing this industry has to a default platform. The company combines portfolio accounting, the Redtail CRM, trading, financial planning, compliance, a client portal and Denali AI, plus turnkey investment solutions (TAMP and OCIO) for firms that want to outsource portfolio management. Orion's own FAQ cites the 2026 T3/Inside Information survey naming it the top market-share vendor in CRM, portfolio accounting and all-in-one software.

The practical appeal is consolidation: one vendor for reporting, billing, trading and CRM means one data set and one support relationship. The trade-off is a sales-led process and an implementation that touches the whole firm. Orion fits independent RIAs and enterprises that want a single platform; firms that only need reporting or billing will find lighter tools cheaper.

What we like
  • All-in-one breadth: portfolio accounting, Redtail CRM (an Orion company since 2022), trading, planning, compliance, client portal and an AI layer
  • TAMP and OCIO investment solutions available inside the same vendor
Watch out for
  • Quote-only pricing with enterprise sales process
  • Breadth means longer implementation than point tools
#2

Black Diamond (SS&C)

Best for: Firms that want wealth tech backed by a large global vendor
Visit sscblackdiamond.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo
Black Diamond (SS&C) homepage

Black Diamond is now the brand for SS&C's unified wealth offering: the company folded its wealth products under SS&C Black Diamond Wealth Solutions, covering portfolio management, reporting, billing, client portal, oversight and trust solutions. The pitch is the end-to-end client lifecycle in one ecosystem, with data flowing across modules instead of stitched together with integrations.

Company materials cite more than $4.6 trillion in assets on the platform and 3,300+ firms. As with everything in this category, pricing is custom-quoted. Black Diamond fits firms that value vendor scale and want portfolio management, reporting and billing from one large provider. Buyers should ask in the demo how the unified branding changed the product they evaluated under the old Black Diamond name.

What we like
  • Unified wealth offering covering portfolio management, reporting, billing, client portal and trust solutions
  • Backed by SS&C Technologies with deep resources
  • 3,300+ firms on the platform per company statements
Watch out for
  • Quote-only pricing
  • The 2025 brand unification means older reviews reference the standalone Black Diamond product
#3

Addepar

Best for: Complex portfolios with alternatives, private investments and multi-custodian assets
Visit addepar.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo
Addepar homepage

Addepar is the data platform for firms whose portfolios do not fit in a spreadsheet. It aggregates portfolio, market and client data across asset classes, including alternatives and private investments, and serves more than 800 firms with client presence in 30+ countries, per company statements. Family offices, OCIOs and RIAs with sophisticated clients are the core audience.

The strength is accuracy and completeness: one reconciled data set for reporting, billing and analysis across custodians and asset types. Addepar's open platform connects to 100+ partners, so it slots into larger stacks rather than replacing them. Pricing is custom and the implementation effort is real. Firms with straightforward equity and bond portfolios will not need this depth; firms with alternatives, multi-entity ownership and complex reporting will.

What we like
  • Data aggregation across every asset class including alternatives and private markets
  • Deep performance reporting built for complex ownership structures
  • Open platform with 100+ software, data and services partners
Watch out for
  • Custom pricing aimed at larger firms and family offices
  • Implementation is a project, not a sign-up
#4

Envestnet Tamarac

Best for: RIAs that live in trading, rebalancing and performance reporting
Visit envestnet.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo
Envestnet Tamarac homepage

Tamarac is Envestnet's platform for independent RIAs, and trading is its center of gravity. Portfolio rebalancing, trading, compliance workflows, performance reporting, billing, CRM and a client portal come together, with newer additions like Report Studio for building client reports and a proposal tool for portfolio construction. Company materials cite more than 1,800 firms on the platform.

RIAs that rebalance models across hundreds of accounts are the natural fit: tax overlay, direct indexing and model management are built in rather than added on. Tamarac also serves as the TAMP technology for firms that outsource. The buying process is enterprise-style with custom quotes. Firms evaluating Tamarac should get the module list in writing, since Envestnet sells many products and "Tamarac" alone does not define the contract.

What we like
  • Trading and rebalancing workflows built for RIAs, including UMA support and tax overlay
  • Report Studio for client-ready reporting
  • CRM, billing and client portal included
Watch out for
  • Quote-only pricing
  • Envestnet's broader product sprawl means buyers should confirm exactly which modules are in the proposal
#5

Nitrogen

Best for: Advisors who win business with risk conversations and proposals
Visit nitrogenwealth.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo
Nitrogen homepage

Nitrogen is the company formerly known as Riskalyze, and the rebrand brought a broader platform: Risk Center, Research Center, Income Center, Tax Center and Legacy Center, plus an AI engine called Nucleus. The core idea is unchanged: quantify each client's risk tolerance as a Risk Number, align the portfolio to it, and use that alignment to win prospects and keep clients through volatile markets.

The company reports 1,000+ proposals generated daily on the platform and an 85% share of the risk-center category by its own count. Advisors praise the client-facing visuals, which translate portfolio risk into something clients actually understand. Nitrogen does not replace portfolio accounting or trading systems; it pairs with them through 50+ integrations. Firms that compete on client experience and proposal quality should demo it.

What we like
  • The Risk Number framework for client risk alignment, invented by the company
  • Risk, Research, Income, Tax and Legacy centers plus proposal generation
  • 50+ integrations with portfolio and CRM systems
Watch out for
  • Custom pricing with no published plans
  • Strongest as a client-engagement layer paired with a portfolio accounting system, not a replacement for one
#6

Advyzon

Best for: Firms that want one modern all-in-one platform without acquisition patchwork
Visit advyzon.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo
Advyzon homepage

Advyzon's argument is architectural: one product, one codebase, one engineering team, instead of a platform assembled through acquisitions. The result covers portfolio management, performance reporting, trading and rebalancing, CRM, billing, secure document storage, client portals and mobile apps, plus investment solutions through Advyzon Investment Management (AIM), including a model marketplace.

The company cites a ninth straight year at #1 in client satisfaction for all-in-one platforms in the 2026 T3/Inside Information survey. Pricing is custom-quoted like everything else here. Advyzon fits independent RIAs and growing firms that want the all-in-one breadth of Orion or Tamarac with a modern, unified build. Enterprise buyers should confirm the Enterprise Solutions scope matches their compliance and oversight needs.

What we like
  • Single platform and codebase for portfolio management, reporting, trading, CRM, billing and document storage
  • Advyzon Investment Management (AIM) for outsourced models and UMA programs
  • Strong client-satisfaction scores cited in industry surveys
Watch out for
  • Custom-quoted pricing
  • Smaller brand footprint than Orion or Envestnet, which matters to firms that buy on vendor scale
#7

AdvisorEngine

Best for: Firms investing in digital client experience and onboarding
Visit advisorengine.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo
AdvisorEngine homepage

AdvisorEngine is the digital wealth platform for advisory firms, owned by Franklin Templeton. The platform covers CRM, digital onboarding and account opening, portfolio management tools, performance reporting, fee billing and a client portal, with APIs for firms that build custom experiences. Company materials describe serving 1,200+ wealth management firms.

The positioning is the client experience: onboarding, portal and engagement tools designed to make the firm's value visible to clients daily. AdvisorEngine fits firms modernizing their client-facing technology, including broker-dealers and RIAs that want digital account opening alongside traditional advice. As with the rest of this list, pricing is quote-based, so buyers should scope the CRM, onboarding and portfolio modules they actually need.

What we like
  • Purpose-built advisor CRM, digital onboarding and account opening, portfolio management tools and client portal
  • Backed by Franklin Templeton
  • API-driven for custom integrations
Watch out for
  • Custom pricing
  • Wealth-management focus means buyers outside that lane should look elsewhere
#8

YCharts

Best for: Advisors who need research, visuals and proposals without a terminal budget
Visit ycharts.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planFree trial (length on website)
YCharts homepage

YCharts is the investment research platform for advisors who refuse to pay for a Bloomberg terminal. It combines market data, security research, portfolio construction tools, proposal generation and client communication visuals, with newer AI features for surfacing insights and drafting recommendations. The company reports 15,000+ financial professionals on the platform and recognition as an investment research market leader in Kitces research.

Advisors use YCharts to build proposals, visualize strategies and communicate with clients in plain language. It integrates with portfolio management systems and Excel, so it works as the research layer on top of an accounting system like Orion or Tamarac. Pricing is custom-quoted. Firms that already own a research terminal will not need it; firms that build proposals in PowerPoint will wonder why they waited.

What we like
  • Deep investment research data with charting and visuals clients understand
  • Portfolio construction, proposal generation and risk tools
  • Integrations with portfolio management systems and Excel
  • Free trial offered on the vendor homepage
Watch out for
  • Quote-only pricing
  • A research and engagement tool, not a portfolio accounting or trading system
#9

Kwanti

Best for: Growing firms that want institutional-grade analytics with a trial
Visit kwanti.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planFree trial (30 days)
Kwanti homepage

Kwanti brings institutional-caliber portfolio analytics to firms that cannot justify enterprise contracts. The platform covers portfolio analysis, performance data, stress testing, model management and proposal generation, with a model marketplace that includes strategies from firms like Fidelity Investments and WisdomTree, per company announcements.

The standout in this category: a free 30-day trial with all features enabled and no software to install, which makes evaluation genuinely self-serve. Kwanti reports thousands of advisor users and industry awards for portfolio analytics. It pairs with portfolio accounting and trading systems rather than replacing them. For a growing RIA that needs better analytics and proposals this quarter, Kwanti is the easiest yes on this list.

What we like
  • Portfolio analytics, stress testing, model portfolios and proposal generation in a web-based platform
  • Model marketplace with third-party strategies
  • Free 30-day trial with all features enabled
Watch out for
  • Custom pricing after the trial
  • Analytics and proposals focus means it complements rather than replaces a portfolio accounting system

How we chose

We started with the categories buyers search: investment management software, portfolio management software and wealth management platform. For each candidate we opened the vendor's homepage, read product documentation and pricing pages, and cross-checked features and company claims against public reviews on G2, Capterra and practitioner discussion on Reddit and advisor forums. We compared platform breadth, analytics depth, client-experience tools, integrations and fit for independent RIAs versus enterprises. Where a price could not be verified on the vendor's own page, we wrote "See website" rather than guessing.

What actually separates these platforms

The first decision is architectural: all-in-one platform or best-of-breed stack. Orion, Black Diamond, Advyzon and Tamarac aim to be the operating system: portfolio accounting, trading, reporting, billing, CRM and client portal from one vendor. Addepar, YCharts, Kwanti and Nitrogen are specialists that layer onto those systems. Most firms pick one platform and one or two specialists; almost nobody runs two all-in-ones.

The second decision is the client mix. Firms with alternatives, private investments and multi-entity families need Addepar's data depth. Firms that compete on service and growth need Nitrogen's risk and proposal tools or YCharts' research visuals. Firms that want to outsource portfolio management should look at the TAMP and OCIO options inside Orion, Tamarac and Advyzon (AIM).

The third decision is commercial. Nothing here publishes per-advisor pricing, so the quote process is the pricing page. Ask every vendor for the same scope: number of advisors, accounts, modules and integrations, with year-one total including implementation. Kwanti's free trial is the only self-serve evaluation on the list; use it to calibrate what the quoted platforms must deliver to justify their contracts.

The quote game: how to buy without overpaying

Treat every demo as a pricing negotiation, because that is what it is. Enterprise wealth tech is sold, not bought: list prices barely exist and discounts move with quarter-end timing, contract length and the competitive shortlist. Bring at least three vendors into the final round and let each know they are competing. The firms that get the best terms are the ones with a written comparison.

Scope the contract tightly. Quote-only vendors bundle modules generously in the proposal and bill for all of them at renewal. Strike the modules you will not use in year one, and ask for the renewal price in writing, not just the year-one discount. Ask what implementation costs, who does data migration, and what the early-termination terms are.

Finally, check the integrations before the price. A platform that does not connect cleanly to your custodian, CRM and planning software will cost more in manual work than any discount saves. Ask each vendor to name three reference firms at your size and asset range, and call them. In a category where nobody publishes prices, references are the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does investment management software cost for an RIA?

Almost no vendor publishes prices, so expect custom quotes. Kwanti offers a free 30-day trial to evaluate before any quote. Typical advisory-platform contracts run from a few thousand to tens of thousands per year depending on advisor count, modules and assets, but treat any number you read online as unverified until it appears in your written quote.

What is the difference between Orion, Black Diamond and Tamarac?

All three are all-in-one wealth platforms covering portfolio accounting, trading, reporting, billing and client portals. Orion includes the Redtail CRM and an AI layer; Black Diamond is SS&C's unified offering with trust solutions; Tamarac is Envestnet's RIA platform with deep trading and UMA workflows. The differences that matter are integration fit with your custodian and CRM, and the commercial terms.

Do I still need YCharts or Kwanti if I have Orion or Tamarac?

Many firms do. The all-in-one platforms handle accounting, trading and reporting; YCharts adds research depth and client-facing visuals, Kwanti adds analytics and proposals, and Nitrogen adds risk alignment. They are complements, not replacements.

What is Addepar used for?

Addepar aggregates portfolio, market and client data across asset classes, including alternatives and private investments, for complex wealth. Family offices, OCIOs and RIAs with sophisticated clients use it for accurate reporting and analysis across custodians and ownership structures.

Is Riskalyze still available?

Riskalyze rebranded as Nitrogen. The Risk Number framework and risk-alignment tools continue under the Nitrogen name at nitrogenwealth.com, expanded with research, income, tax and legacy centers.

Can I try any of these before buying?

Kwanti publishes a free 30-day trial with all features. The rest sell through demos and sales conversations. Ask every vendor for a sandbox or pilot with your own data before signing a multi-year contract.
