Best Vehicle Tracking Software in 2026: 9 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • The hardware-heavy players, Samsara, Verizon Connect, Motive and Geotab, all sell through quotes and multi-year contracts, so plan for a sales cycle and read the contract term before anything else.
  • Fleetio is the one with published pricing: from $4 per vehicle per month billed annually, plus a 14-day trial, which makes it the natural pick for fleets that want maintenance software without telematics hardware lock-in.
  • Dashcams and ELD compliance are where the real money is decided: most platforms charge separately for camera hardware and video plans on top of the per-vehicle tracking fee.
  • Teletrac Navman, now independent under Respida Capital, and Powerfleet (formerly Fleet Complete) are worth shortlisting if you run mixed fleets or operate across regions.

The best vehicle tracking software

A fleet owner with 20 trucks once told us his tracking bill looked nothing like the quote. The per-vehicle fee was fine; the surprise was the dashcam hardware, the video plan, the installation fees and the three-year contract he had signed to get the "discounted" rate. That is the pattern across this whole category. These nine platforms cover the working set of the US fleet market, from hardware-first telematics giants to software-only maintenance tools that pair with any tracker you already own.

#1

Samsara

Best for: Operations that want vehicle tracking, AI dashcams, maintenance and site visibility in one connected platform
Visit samsara.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote only)
Free planNo (no free trial advertised)
Samsara homepage

Samsara is the premium pick in fleet telematics and prices like it. The Connected Operations Platform combines GPS tracking with AI dashcams, driver safety coaching, maintenance workflows, fuel management and even site visibility, all feeding one dashboard. The safety story is the headline: the company reports 380,000-plus accidents prevented across its customer base, driven by real-time in-cab alerts and automated coaching. It is also the best-reviewed platform in the category on G2, ranked number one in fleet management for seven quarters running.

The catch is commercial, not technical. There is no published price anywhere; everything runs through sales, and discounts typically come attached to multi-year terms. Samsara makes most sense when you will actually use the breadth: safety program, maintenance, fuel, the works. If you only need dots on a map, cheaper tools do that job for a fraction of the cost.

What we like
  • True all-in-one connected operations platform spanning tracking, safety, maintenance, fuel and equipment
  • Strong AI dashcam program with real-time in-cab alerts
  • Rated number one in fleet management on G2 for multiple quarters
Watch out for
  • Pricing fully custom with multi-year contracts typical
  • Breadth means you pay for modules you may never open
#2

Verizon Connect

Best for: Mid-size to enterprise fleets wanting near real-time tracking with AI video and deep reporting
Visit verizonconnect.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote only)
Free planNo (no free trial advertised)
Verizon Connect homepage

Verizon Connect is the incumbent enterprise answer, built from Verizon's acquisitions of Fleetmatics and Telogis. The Reveal platform delivers near real-time GPS tracking with smart clustering maps, geofencing, driver scorecards and compliance tools including ELD and DVIR. The AI video side is genuinely strong: extended-view cameras give near 360-degree coverage, and distracted-driving detection flags phone use and fatigue in real time. OEM integration with Ford and GM means some vehicles connect with zero hardware installs.

The honest catch is the contract. Verizon Connect does not publish prices, and third-party reporting consistently describes multi-year terms, often three years, as the default. That makes the demo impressive and the renewal awkward if you did not negotiate the term. Get the full schedule of fees, including what happens at renewal, before you sign. For fleets already deep in the Verizon ecosystem, the bundled value is real.

What we like
  • Near real-time tracking with location updates as often as every 30 seconds
  • AI dashcams with extended-view cameras and distracted-driving detection
  • Strong OEM integrations with Ford and GM for hardware-free activation
Watch out for
  • No published pricing
  • Contracts commonly run 36 months, so negotiate term length early
#3

Motive

Best for: Trucking, logistics and field-service fleets that need ELD compliance plus driver safety
Visit gomotive.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote only)
Free planNo (no free trial advertised)
Motive homepage

Motive, formerly KeepTruckin, grew up in trucking and it shows. The platform was built around ELD compliance first, then expanded into AI dashcams, GPS tracking, equipment monitoring, maintenance, spend management through the Motive Card, and workforce management. More than 120,000 businesses run on it across trucking, construction, oil and gas, field services and agriculture. For a carrier that needs compliance handled properly alongside safety, the fit is natural.

The trade is that Motive is a broad platform sold through sales reps, with pricing quoted per fleet and no public price list. Reviewers generally praise the driver app and the compliance depth, while noting that advanced reporting is thinner than what dedicated analytics platforms offer. It is the safe default for trucking; it is less obviously the answer for non-trucking fleets, where Samsara or Verizon Connect may fit better.

What we like
  • Built for trucking workflows with FMCSA-registered ELD and strong compliance tooling
  • Integrated AI dashcams, spend management with the Motive Card, and maintenance in one platform
  • Serves 120,000-plus businesses across physical-economy industries
Watch out for
  • No published pricing
  • Some reviewers note limited advanced reporting versus specialist analytics tools
#4

Geotab

Best for: Fleets that want an open telematics platform with data depth and a huge integration marketplace
Visit geotab.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote only)
Free planNo (no free trial advertised)
Geotab homepage

Geotab is the data nerd's telematics platform. The GO device plugs into the OBD II port and streams location, speed, idling, diagnostics and fuel data into MyGeotab, where the real value is the ecosystem: more than 200 third-party marketplace add-ons, deep OEM partnerships that unify mixed-fleet data, and AI-powered insights across safety, sustainability and productivity. ABI Research ranks it number one in commercial telematics, and it connects around 6 million vehicles and assets globally.

The catch is how you buy it. Geotab sells through partners and resellers, which means the quote, the installation and the support you get depend partly on the partner you land with. Ask for references from fleets like yours before committing. It is also genuinely an enterprise-grade platform; a five-truck operation will find the depth unnecessary. For fleets that want their telematics data to flow into other systems, though, the openness is unmatched.

What we like
  • Open platform with 200-plus marketplace add-ons and strong OEM partnerships
  • ABI Research ranked it number one in commercial telematics
  • GO device plugs into the OBD II port with no wiring required
Watch out for
  • Sold through a partner and reseller network, so pricing and support quality vary by partner
  • The platform's depth can overwhelm small fleets
#5

Fleetio

Best for: Fleets that want maintenance management software without being locked to one telematics vendor
Visit fleetio.com
Starting price$4/vehicle/month billed annually (Essential plan; $5 billed monthly)
Free planFree trial (14 days, no credit card)
Fleetio homepage

Fleetio is the odd one out here, and that is its strength. It is fleet management software, not a GPS tracker: it does maintenance scheduling, work orders, inspections, fuel tracking and cost-per-mile analytics, and it pulls live telematics data from whatever devices you already run, including Samsara, Geotab, Motive and Verizon Connect. Pricing is published and simple: Essential at $4 per vehicle per month billed annually, Professional at $7, Premium at $10, with a 14-day trial and no credit card required.

The honest catch is in the name of this article: Fleetio does not track vehicles by itself. If you need live GPS, you pair it with a telematics provider and pay for both. For fleets whose real pain is maintenance chaos, downtime and cost tracking rather than dots on a map, it is the best-value software on this list. The company reached unicorn status in 2025, so it is not going anywhere.

What we like
  • Transparent per-vehicle pricing starting at $4 per month
  • Hardware-agnostic, integrating with Samsara, Geotab, Motive, Verizon Connect and others
  • Strong maintenance, work order and fuel management without GPS hardware of its own
Watch out for
  • Not a GPS tracker itself, so you still need telematics devices for live location
  • 5-vehicle minimum on subscriptions
#6

GPS Insight

Best for: Fleets that want to mix and match hardware types under one interface
Visit gpsinsight.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote only)
Free planFree trial (for qualified companies, per vendor materials)
GPS Insight homepage

GPS Insight has been in this business since 2004, and its pitch is flexibility: tracking-only hardware, engine diagnostics units, sensor-based devices, trailer trackers and asset trackers all feed the same web interface. That matters for fleets with mixed vehicle types, where one vendor's standard device does not fit everything. The platform ships 60-plus reports, 25-plus alert types and a camera media library, and the company offers free trials for qualified companies with no-contract device rentals.

The limitation is polish versus the giants. The interface is functional rather than beautiful, and integrations with maintenance platforms exist but the ecosystem is smaller than Geotab's or Samsara's. Pricing is quote-based, so you still go through sales. For a mixed fleet that needs different hardware on different asset classes, it is one of the most practical options here.

What we like
  • Supports multiple hardware types, from OBD plug-ins to trailer trackers, in one platform
  • 60-plus reports and 25-plus alert types
  • No-contract rental options on devices
Watch out for
  • Quoted pricing only
  • The product line is broad enough that demos need to be scoped to your hardware
#7

Azuga

Best for: Fleets that want driver behavior scoring, safety coaching and gamified driver rewards
Visit azuga.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote only)
Free planNo (no free trial advertised)
Azuga homepage

Azuga, a Bridgestone company, built its reputation on driver behavior. The platform scores drivers on speeding, braking, acceleration and idling, then layers on a driver rewards program that gamifies safe driving, an approach that tends to land better with drivers than pure monitoring. Hardware is instant-install OBD, portable between vehicles, and the same platform covers asset tracking, dashcams, eLogs for ELD compliance and field service management.

The honest catch is the parent company. Bridgestone ownership brings resources but also means the roadmap follows a tire giant's strategy, not a startup's. Pricing is quote-based through their configurator, so budget a sales conversation. For fleets where driver buy-in is the difference between a safety program that works and cameras drivers resent, the rewards angle is a genuine differentiator.

What we like
  • Driver scoring and safety rewards program that uses positive reinforcement instead of pure surveillance
  • Instant-install OBD hardware that moves between vehicles
  • Field service management and eLogs in the same platform
Watch out for
  • Pricing runs through a quote quiz, not a price list
  • Owned by Bridgestone, so long-term product direction follows the parent
#8

Teletrac Navman

Best for: Global and mixed fleets needing GPS tracking, video telematics, routing and ELD from one vendor
Visit teletracnavman.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote only)
Free planNo (no free trial advertised)
Teletrac Navman homepage

Teletrac Navman is the global veteran of this list, managing more than 750,000 vehicles and assets worldwide. The platform covers the full spread: GPS tracking, AI video telematics, driver scorecards, routing and dispatch, ELD compliance and fleet maintenance, with integrations into dispatch and TMS systems like McLeod Software and Shipwell. It serves everyone from small operators to the US Department of Homeland Security.

The thing to know is the ownership change. The company transitioned to an independent entity under Respida Capital, a software-focused private equity firm. That is not a red flag by itself, but it is a reason to ask about the product roadmap and support structure before signing a long contract. For fleets operating across countries or running mixed asset types, the global platform depth is hard to match at this price point.

What we like
  • Global footprint with 750,000-plus vehicles and assets under management
  • Combines tracking, AI video telematics, routing and dispatch, ELD and maintenance in one platform
  • Strong integration list including McLeod, Trimble and Shipwell
Watch out for
  • Now independent under Respida Capital ownership, so confirm the roadmap post-acquisition
  • Quoted pricing only
#9

Powerfleet

Best for: Fleets wanting simple, out-of-the-box global tracking with video and compliance
Visit fleetcomplete.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote only)
Free planNo (no free trial advertised)
Powerfleet homepage

Powerfleet is what Fleet Complete became after the merger, and its own website now carries the Powerfleet brand while keeping the fleetcomplete.com domain. The Unity platform offers real-time GPS tracking, asset visibility, AI dash cameras with in-cab coaching, ELD compliance and an open API, positioned as simple out-of-the-box telematics for fleets that do not want a science project. It operates across North America, Europe, Mexico and Australia.

The honest catch is the transition. Reviews, forum threads and third-party documentation still say Fleet Complete, and some integrations may reference the old branding. Confirm during the demo that you are looking at the current Unity platform and not legacy Fleet Complete materials. Pricing is quote-based. For fleets that want capable tracking without the enterprise sales machinery of Samsara or Verizon, it deserves a demo slot.

What we like
  • Intuitive platform with real-time tracking, video telematics and ELD compliance
  • Operates across North America, Europe, Mexico and Australia
  • Unity platform with open API for integrations
Watch out for
  • Rebranded from Fleet Complete after the Powerfleet merger, so older reviews and documentation reference the old name
  • Pricing quoted only

Dashcams and ELDs: the add-ons that decide your total cost

The base tracking fee is only the first line of the invoice. Dashcams are the biggest add-on: expect separate hardware costs per vehicle plus a monthly video plan, and AI features like distracted-driving detection usually sit on the higher video tier. Samsara, Motive, Verizon Connect, Geotab, Azuga, Teletrac Navman and Powerfleet all sell cameras; Fleetio does not, since it is software-only.

ELD compliance is the second decision. If you run regulated trucks, Motive's FMCSA-registered ELD, Geotab's certified ELD, Verizon Connect's compliance suite and Teletrac Navman's ELD all cover hours of service, but the compliance module is often priced separately from base tracking. GPS Insight and Azuga cover eLogs too. Price the full stack, tracking plus cameras plus compliance, per vehicle per month, before you compare any two vendors. That number, not the headline tracking fee, is what you will actually pay.

Per-vehicle pricing, contracts and the fine print

Almost nobody in this category publishes prices, and that is deliberate. Samsara, Verizon Connect, Motive, Geotab, Azuga, Teletrac Navman and Powerfleet all quote per fleet, with the number moving on vehicle count, hardware choice, contract length and which modules you add. Third-party estimates put the big platforms roughly in the $20 to $50 per vehicle per month range, but treat those as rumors: your quote is the only real number.

The contract term is the lever that matters most. Multi-year terms, often 36 months, are where the discounts hide, and they are also where buyers get stuck when the service disappoints. Ask for the monthly rate on a 12-month term as your baseline, get the early termination fee in writing, and confirm what happens to your data and your hardware if you leave. Ask whether installation is included or billed per vehicle, and whether the dashcam video plan is bundled or separate.

The exception that proves the rule is Fleetio, with published per-vehicle pricing from $4 per month and a real trial. It is also the only one here that does not sell you hardware, which is why it can afford the transparency. Whatever you choose, get three quotes, price the full three-year cost including hardware and cameras, and never sign a contract whose term you did not choose on purpose.

How we chose

We started with the categories buyers search: vehicle tracking software, GPS fleet tracking software, fleet tracking system and fleet management software. For each candidate we opened the vendor's own homepage and pricing page where one existed, checked claims against public reviews on G2 and Capterra and practitioner discussion on Reddit and fleet forums, and compared live tracking quality, dashcam and safety features, ELD compliance, maintenance tooling, integration breadth and fleet-size fit. Where a vendor publishes no price we wrote "See website" rather than repeating third-party estimates.

Frequently asked questions

How much does vehicle tracking software cost per vehicle?

Expect roughly $20 to $50 per vehicle per month for the full platforms (Samsara, Verizon Connect, Motive, Geotab), though none publish prices and your quote will vary. Dashcams and ELD modules usually add more. Fleetio is the transparent outlier at $4 to $10 per vehicle per month for maintenance software, with GPS tracking coming from a separate telematics provider.

Do I need dashcams, or is GPS tracking enough?

GPS tracking tells you where vehicles are and how they are driven; dashcams prove what happened. Fleets focused on insurance claims and liability almost always add cameras, and the AI coaching features genuinely reduce incidents. If your main problem is dispatch and customer ETAs, tracking alone is fine.

What is ELD compliance and which tools cover it?

The ELD mandate requires most commercial truck drivers to log hours of service electronically. Motive, Geotab, Verizon Connect, Teletrac Navman, Azuga, Powerfleet and GPS Insight all offer ELD or eLogs solutions, usually as a priced module on top of base tracking. Confirm the device is FMCSA-registered before you buy.

Can I use Fleetio with the GPS tracker I already have?

Yes, that is the point of it. Fleetio integrates with Samsara, Geotab, Motive, Verizon Connect, Azuga and others, pulling live location and diagnostic data into its maintenance platform. It is software-only, so it never replaces your tracker; it sits on top of it.

How long are the contracts?

The big telematics vendors typically sell 12 to 36-month terms, with the best per-vehicle rates on the longest terms. Always ask for the 12-month price as a baseline and get the early termination fee in writing. Fleetio bills monthly or annually with published prices, and GPS Insight offers no-contract device rentals.

Should I worry about the Teletrac Navman and Powerfleet ownership changes?

Not automatically, but ask the questions. Teletrac Navman is now independent under Respida Capital, and Fleet Complete rebranded to Powerfleet after its merger. In both cases, confirm the product roadmap, support structure and contract terms in writing before signing a multi-year deal.
