Falcon Complete is the answer when the 3 a.m. question matters most. CrowdStrike's analysts do not escalate a confirmed intrusion to a sleeping customer and wait; they act, under authority granted in advance, and the company puts a warranty behind that promise. For organisations that can fund it and accept the platform commitment, it is the strongest managed operations offer in the market.
The commitment is the cost. Complete means Falcon everywhere, which means ripping out whatever endpoint tool you run now, and accepting that your detection and your response live or die with one vendor. Security leaders who lived through the 2024 Falcon outage will weigh that honestly. Those who standardise anyway get the deepest integration between sensor and responder available.
What we like- Falcon Complete analysts hold full response authority: they contain hosts, stop processes and remediate without waiting for your approval, backed by a breach prevention warranty of up to $1 million under its terms, built on the Falcon platform, so the people responding operate the same sensor that detected, elite threat hunting and intelligence from one of the most-used endpoint platforms in the world, strong identity and cloud coverage beyond the endpoint
Watch out for- Requires standardising on the Falcon platform
- Your existing EDR contract is replaced, not wrapped, premium pricing that climbs with modules, and Complete is quote-based, single-vendor concentration: a platform outage or failure is also your operations failure, an argument the July 2024 incident made concrete, less attractive where procurement policy demands tool diversity
#2Arctic Wolf
Best for: Mid-market, named concierge team4.7/5 on

Arctic Wolf built the mid-market category: companies too big to ignore security operations and too small to staff them. Its concierge model is the differentiator, a named team that knows your network, tunes your detections and sits in your incident calls. For an IT director who is also the security team, that relationship is the product.
Two diligence points. First, pin down response authority in the contract; the concierge advises well, but who isolates the host at night is a specific clause, not a vibe. Second, note the Cylance acquisition: Arctic Wolf now owns an endpoint product, so its tool-agnostic advice is worth testing the way you would test any vendor's.
What we like- Concierge Security Team model: named engineers and analysts who learn your environment rather than a rotating queue, works around your existing tools, with broad log ingestion across endpoint, network, cloud and identity, bundles managed risk services, including vulnerability assessment and security awareness training, one of the largest managed SOC operations in the market, serving mid-size through large organisations
Watch out for- Response is more advisory than Falcon Complete
- Containment actions typically run through your team or pre-approved playbooks, quote-based pricing with multi-year terms common, acquired BlackBerry's Cylance endpoint assets in February 2025, so its historically tool-agnostic stance now includes its own endpoint product to sell, service quality reports vary by the concierge team assigned

Red Canary is the specialist's choice. Its reputation rests on detection quality: fewer, better alerts, each backed by analyst investigation, built by a team that publishes its detection research openly. Organisations with a competent internal team that lacks overnight coverage and detection depth buy Red Canary to multiply that team rather than replace it.
The Zscaler acquisition is the open question to work through in procurement: integration plans, support for non-Zscaler stacks, and contractual protections if the product direction changes. None of that dents its current detection record, but a three-year contract should price the uncertainty in.
What we like- Widely credited with the best detection engineering in the MDR market: curated detections tested against real adversary behaviour, tool-agnostic: operates on top of leading endpoint platforms you already run, including CrowdStrike, SentinelOne and Microsoft Defender, transparent reporting, including its annual Threat Detection Report built from incidents across its customer base, collaborative response model with fast, well-evidenced escalations when action is yours to take
Watch out for- Collaborative means your team still executes much of the hands-on remediation, was acquired by Zscaler in 2025, so roadmap and platform strategy deserve diligence questions, pricing is quote-based and enterprise oriented, no bundled platform: you pay for your EDR and for Red Canary on top
#4Expel
Best for: Transparent managed operations4.6/5 on

Expel's bet is that managed security should not be a black box. Its analysts work in a platform you can watch, with case timelines that merge machine triage and human judgement, so your team learns from every incident instead of receiving a monthly summary. Organisations burned by opaque MSSP tickets tend to find this model corrective.
The work is agreeing the playbook. Expel can act, advise or a mix by alert type, and the value of the service depends on those rules being set with care at onboarding rather than left at defaults. Treat the first month as a joint design exercise and the transparency pays off; skip it and you have bought a very visible queue.
What we like- Workbench platform shows customers exactly what analysts see: every alert, decision and action in a shared case timeline, automation handles triage enrichment, so human analysts spend time on real incidents, works across your existing stack, endpoint, cloud, SaaS, network and identity, response scope can extend to full remediation actions under agreed rules
Watch out for- Quote-based pricing aimed at mid-market and enterprise, transparency exposes how noisy your environment is, which some teams experience as work, not comfort, smaller brand than the platform giants, so board-level name recognition is lower, response authority is configurable, which means you must configure it, and document it, deliberately

ReliaQuest sells order to enterprises whose security operations sprawl across tools and teams. GreyMatter layers detection, investigation and response automation over the existing estate, and ReliaQuest's analysts work cases inside that shared picture. For a Fortune 1000 CISO with three SIEMs and four endpoint tools, that consolidation is the entire argument.
Below that scale the argument thins. A 300-person company does not have an operations sprawl to unify, and will get more value per dollar from Arctic Wolf, Expel or Huntress. ReliaQuest knows its segment; make sure you are in it before paying enterprise onboarding costs.
What we like- GreyMatter platform unifies detection, investigation and response across whatever SIEM, EDR and cloud tools an enterprise already runs, strong fit for large organisations consolidating multiple SOC functions and tools into one operational view, curated detection content and threat intelligence feeding automated triage, serves many of the largest US enterprises, with the scale to staff complex environments
Watch out for- Enterprise pricing and onboarding effort to match, value rises with stack complexity
- Smaller environments pay for unification they do not need, response model is built around your SOC as much as instead of it, so assess the staffing you still carry, platform breadth means the buying process involves several internal stakeholders

Rapid7 is the platform consolidation pick for the mid-market. Many organisations already run InsightVM for vulnerability management; adding Rapid7's MDR means the analysts responding to an incident can see the exposure context of the affected asset without a second vendor, and procurement deals with one contract.
Set response expectations precisely. Rapid7 investigates thoroughly and guides response, but the hands that isolate hosts are often yours, so overnight authority needs to be agreed and staffed on your side. Buy it for the combined visibility and the single-vendor economics, with eyes open about the response model.
What we like- MDR sits inside a wider platform, InsightVM vulnerability management and InsightIDR, so detection and the exposure data behind it live in one relationship, analysts work from full telemetry with documented response workflows, published per-asset pricing benchmarks exist in the market for its MDR, giving buyers a negotiation anchor, good fit for mid-market teams standardising on one vendor for scanning, SIEM and response
Watch out for- Response authority is more advisory than Falcon Complete
- Containment often runs through your team, best value assumes you adopt the platform
- À la carte buyers get less of the integration benefit, Rapid7's breadth has meant shifting product packaging, so confirm current bundles in the contract, customer success feedback places it mid-pack among MDR leaders

eSentire's heritage is the network. Where newer MDR is endpoint-first, eSentire built its name watching network traffic and logs together, which still matters in environments with operational technology, legacy systems and lateral movement risk that endpoint agents cannot see. Law firms and financial firms with evidentiary standards value its investigation depth.
It is a quieter name in 2026 shortlists, which cuts both ways: less marketing inflation, more diligence work for you. Ask for recent reference customers in your industry and test the containment workflow, not the detection claims, in any proof of concept.
What we like- One of the original MDR pioneers, with deep network-level visibility alongside endpoint and log monitoring, multi-signal investigations suit regulated industries, law firms, finance and healthcare among them, where evidence quality matters, 24/7 SOC with named response actions and threat containment support, strong fit where network telemetry is as important as endpoint data
Watch out for- Quote-based enterprise pricing, less prominent in current analyst shortlists than CrowdStrike or Arctic Wolf, which affects internal selling, network depth is wasted on fully cloud-native estates with little network to watch, acquired and integrated into OpenText's orbit in recent years, so confirm product investment in diligence
#8Huntress

Huntress closes the list because most companies are small, and most of this market ignores them. It delivers the essential shape of security operations (watched endpoints, human-reviewed alerts, someone competent responding) at published prices a 40-person company can approve without a board paper. Its growth through the MSP channel reflects how small firms actually buy IT.
Know the ceiling. Huntress is not the answer for a regulated enterprise with a complex cloud estate, and its awareness training and identity tools, while useful, are younger than its core EDR. For its segment, though, the alternative is usually no operations at all, and against that baseline Huntress is an easy recommendation.
What we like- Built specifically for small and mid-size businesses and the MSPs that serve them, the segment the enterprise providers price out, published pricing, which is rare enough in this market to count as a feature, human analysts review automated detections, with managed EDR, Microsoft 365 identity monitoring and security awareness in one stack, fast deployment measured in hours, not onboarding quarters
Watch out for- Depth and customisation trail the enterprise providers
- Complex estates will outgrow it, response authority is good for its segment but not Falcon Complete grade, MSP channel model means many small buyers purchase through a provider, adding a layer, platform breadth is still growing compared with its endpoint roots
How we chose
Providers were included if managed detection and response, a staffed security operations function, is a core offer today, across enterprise, mid-market and small business segments. Ordering weighs response authority first, then detection reputation, stack fit and segment focus. Pricing is shown as See website because every provider here contracts per environment; the one honourable exception in spirit, Huntress, publishes rates that vary by product bundle, so verify the current figure on its pricing page. FeaturedCustomers' Winter 2026 customer success report, which rates Arctic Wolf, CrowdStrike, Expel, Rapid7, Red Canary and ReliaQuest among its market leaders and top performers, was used as a cross-check.
The contract clauses that decide your outcome
Response authority, in writing: which actions the provider may take without approval (host isolation, account disablement, process termination, mailbox rule removal), and which need your sign-off. Everything else is commentary on this clause.
Time commitments with numbers: mean time to acknowledge, to investigate and to contain, by severity, with reporting against them. A provider that will not commit to times is telling you its queue is the product.
Exit and evidence: your logs, your case history and your detection content at the end of the contract, in usable form, and what happens to monitoring during a dispute. Switching operations providers mid-incident is the worst negotiation position in security; the exit clause is written for that day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MDR and a traditional MSSP?
A traditional managed security service provider monitors your tools and sends alerts and tickets. An MDR provider investigates those alerts with its own analysts and takes, or directs, response action. The practical test is the 3 a.m. question: an MSSP phones you about the fire; an MDR is authorised to start putting it out.
How much does a security operations service cost?
Pricing is per endpoint, per user or per log volume, and almost always quoted. Market reporting puts mainstream MDR from the high teens of dollars per asset per month at the platform end to six figures a year for enterprise concierge services. Huntress publishes small business rates; everyone else negotiates. Compare quotes on identical scope: endpoints, identities, cloud workloads and log volume.
Can one of these companies replace our internal security team?
It replaces the operations shift, not the function. You still own risk decisions, access approvals, vendor management and the response actions the contract reserves to you. Most mid-market buyers keep one internal security lead and rent the 24/7 desk; enterprises more often blend provider operations with an internal SOC, as ReliaQuest's model assumes.
Why does response authority matter so much?
Because intrusion damage scales with dwell time. Ransomware operators move from first access to encryption in hours, often overnight. A provider authorised to isolate a host in minute ten prevents the incident that a provider who must wake your IT manager in hour two can only describe. The authority is granted in the contract, in advance, or it does not exist when it counts.
We already have an EDR. Which providers work with it?
Red Canary, Expel, Arctic Wolf and ReliaQuest are built to operate over leading third-party endpoint platforms. CrowdStrike's Complete requires Falcon itself, and Huntress supplies its own managed stack. If your EDR contract has years to run, that fact alone narrows this list to the tool-agnostic half.
