Best OCR Software for Invoice Processing in 2026: 9 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • Veryfi ($500 a month, $0.16 per invoice) and Nanonets ($0.30 per page pay-as-you-go) are the most transparent API options.
  • Docsumo ($179 a month for 1,000 pages) bundles extraction with a review workflow, so your team only touches exceptions.
  • The cloud giants (AWS, Google, Azure) all charge about $10 per 1,000 pages for invoice parsing, but you build the application yourself.
  • Rossum and ABBYY are the enterprise picks; both are quote-based and aimed at high-volume AP teams.
  • Klippa is the European option with fraud detection built in.

The best OCR software for invoice processing

#1

Nanonets

Best for: pay-as-you-go invoice extraction
Visit nanonets.com
Starting price$0.30 per page (Starter, pay as you go)
Free planFree trial (credits-based)
Nanonets homepage

Nanonets is the most accessible entry point in this market. The Starter tier processes invoices at $0.30 per page with no monthly commitment, using pre-trained models for invoices, receipts and IDs, and you can start with free credits without a card. For teams that want custom models, the Pro tier adds visual workflow builders, retraining and advanced integrations.

The 2026 pricing restructure deserves attention. Nanonets moved toward block-based billing where a typical invoice consumes 4 to 6 blocks at $0.02 to $0.30 each, which lands around $1.20 to $1.80 per invoice on some paths, and Pro workflows are quoted at $999 a month. Run your real volume through their pricing page before committing. For low and irregular volumes, the $0.30-a-page Starter remains the simplest deal here.

What we like
  • True pay-per-page option with no monthly fee
  • Pre-trained invoice, receipt and ID models
  • Open-source OCR models available
Watch out for
  • Newer block-based pricing complicates estimates
  • Pro workflows jump to $999 a month
  • Support is email-first on lower tiers
#2

Docsumo

Best for: extraction with a built-in review workflow
Visit docsumo.com
Starting price$179 per month (Starter, 1,000 pages)
Free planFree trial (14 days)
Docsumo homepage

Docsumo sells the finished process, not just the extraction. Invoices are read, checked against validation rules and each other, and your team only sees what failed, with the reason attached. The Starter plan at $179 a month covers 1,000 pages, 3 users, unlimited document AI models and table extraction. Growth at $449 adds API access, 5,000 pages and integrations.

That positioning matters. Raw OCR APIs hand you JSON and leave the application to you; Docsumo hands you a workflow your AP team can run on day one. The limits to note: API access starts at Growth, and there is no on-premises deployment for regulated environments. For finance teams that want automation without engineering, Docsumo is the most complete package under $200 a month.

What we like
  • AI review queue so staff only touch exceptions
  • Pre-built invoice models with table extraction
  • 14-day trial with up to 1,000 pages
Watch out for
  • Starter caps at 3 users
  • API access needs the Growth tier
  • Cloud-only, no on-premises option
#3

Veryfi

Best for: a real-time OCR API with a genuine free tier
Visit veryfi.com
Starting price$500 per month (Starter, usage-based)
Free planYes (Free plan, 100 documents a month)
Veryfi homepage

Veryfi is built for developers who want invoice OCR working today. The models are pre-trained, so there is no training step, no templates and no humans in the loop; documents are processed in real time on Veryfi's own infrastructure. The free plan covers 100 documents a month across invoices, receipts, checks and statements. The Starter plan carries a $500 monthly minimum and includes roughly 3,125 invoices at $0.16 each.

The $500 floor is the whole story. Below that volume, the free tier or a pay-per-page competitor is cheaper; above it, Veryfi's per-document rates are among the lowest published. SOC 2 Type II certification and HIPAA readiness suit fintech and expense products. If you are building an app that reads invoices, start on the free tier and upgrade when the math flips.

What we like
  • Free tier with 100 documents monthly
  • Pre-trained models, no training needed
  • $0.16 per invoice on the Starter plan
Watch out for
  • $500 monthly minimum on paid plans
  • Receipts and invoices only on lower tiers
  • Custom document types need the Custom plan
#4

Rossum

Best for: enterprise AP automation at scale
Visit rossum.ai
Starting priceSee website
Free planFree trial (14 days)
Rossum homepage

Rossum pioneered the template-free approach: instead of configuring layouts per vendor, its AI reads invoices the way a person would, learning new formats on the fly. That made it the darling of enterprise AP teams processing tens of thousands of invoices, and its acquisition by Coupa embeds it in a broader spend management platform.

The enterprise framing is total. Pricing is quote-based, with third-party estimates starting around $1,500 a month, and the 14-day trial includes 300 page extractions. If you process enough invoices that a 1% accuracy gain pays for the platform, Rossum is the benchmark. If you process hundreds, the tools above deliver 90% of the value at a tenth of the cost.

What we like
  • AI-native with zero-template setup
  • Purpose-built for transactional documents
  • Now part of Coupa's spend management suite
Watch out for
  • Quote-based enterprise pricing
  • Third parties estimate from $1,500 a month
  • Overkill under a few thousand invoices
#5

ABBYY

Best for: enterprise document capture with decades of pedigree
Visit abbyy.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
ABBYY homepage

ABBYY has been in the OCR business longer than most competitors have existed, and its technology still leads on difficult inputs: handwriting, low-quality scans, dozens of languages. The modern platform (Vantage) applies that engine to invoice processing with low-code skills for classification and extraction, plus process mining to find where documents stall.

Like Rossum, it is firmly enterprise: quote-based pricing, sales-led procurement, and more capability than a small AP team needs. Where ABBYY wins is messy, multilingual, multi-format document chaos at scale, especially in shared service centers. For straightforward PDF invoices in English, you are paying for depth you will never use.

What we like
  • Decades of OCR leadership
  • Strong handwriting and multilingual support
  • Process intelligence beyond capture
Watch out for
  • Quote-based pricing
  • Enterprise sales cycle
  • Complexity for simple invoice jobs
#6

Klippa

Best for: European teams that need fraud detection
Visit klippa.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planFree trial (EUR 25 credits)
Klippa homepage

Klippa is the European answer to this category, and it differentiates on trust: GDPR-native data handling plus document fraud detection that flags manipulated invoices, not just reads them. The DocHorizon platform covers invoice and receipt parsing alongside expense management flows, and you can start with EUR 25 in free credits.

Pricing is quote-only, which is the standard complaint about this whole category's upper half. For EU companies with compliance requirements, or any business worried about invoice fraud rather than just data entry, Klippa's combination is unique. For pure extraction at the lowest price, the pay-per-page tools above win.

What we like
  • EU-based with GDPR-native operations
  • Document fraud detection built in
  • Receipt and invoice parsing plus expense flows
Watch out for
  • Quote-only pricing
  • Smaller ecosystem than US rivals
  • Fraud features may exceed simple needs
#7

Amazon Textract

Best for: AWS-native engineering teams
Visit aws.amazon.com
Starting price$10 per 1,000 pages (AnalyzeExpense, first 1M pages)
Free planFree tier (limited)
Amazon Textract homepage

Textract is the engineer's choice: an API that returns structured data, priced at $10 per 1,000 pages for the AnalyzeExpense invoice API ($8 after the first million). Raw text detection is even cheaper at $1.50 per 1,000 pages. If your stack already runs on AWS and you have developers to spare, the unit economics are unbeatable.

The trade is everything around the API. There is no review queue, no validation workflow, no AP process; Amazon's human-review add-on is in maintenance mode, so you build flagging and review yourself. At $0.01 per invoice, Textract is the cheapest extraction on this list and the most work. Choose it when you have the engineering team to turn JSON into a process.

What we like
  • Cheap at $0.01 per invoice page
  • Deep AWS integration
  • Raw text detection from $1.50 per 1,000 pages
Watch out for
  • You build the whole application
  • No review workflow included
  • Human review add-on is in maintenance
#8

Google Document AI

Best for: Google Cloud teams that want managed parsers
Visit cloud.google.com
Starting price$10 per 1,000 pages (invoice/expense parser)
Free planFree tier (limited)
Google Document AI homepage

Google's Document AI offers prebuilt processors for invoices and expenses at $10 per 1,000 pages, with enterprise OCR at $1.50 per 1,000 pages for raw text. The parsers are strong, handwriting recognition is excellent, and the Workbench lets you train custom processors on your own document types.

Like Textract, it is a toolkit rather than a product. You get parsed fields; the validation rules, exception queues and accounting integrations are your code. For Google Cloud shops with ML-savvy teams, it is the natural pick. For finance teams that want software rather than a project, Docsumo or Nanonets will be live months sooner.

What we like
  • Prebuilt invoice and expense parsers
  • $0.01 per page pricing
  • Strong handwriting recognition
Watch out for
  • Application layer is yours to build
  • Processor configuration takes learning
  • Costs add up with add-on processors
#9

Azure Document Intelligence

Best for: Microsoft-centered organizations
Visit azure.microsoft.com
Starting price$10 per 1,000 pages (prebuilt invoice/receipt)
Free planFree tier (limited)
Azure Document Intelligence homepage

Microsoft's Document Intelligence (formerly Form Recognizer) rounds out the cloud trio at the same $10-per-1,000-pages price for prebuilt invoice and receipt models, with meaningful volume discounts at committed scale. Custom models train on as few as five samples, and the Power Automate and Logic Apps connectors give Microsoft shops a low-code path to a working process.

The low-code connectors are the differentiator here: a Power Automate flow that watches an inbox, extracts invoice fields and writes them to SharePoint or Dynamics is achievable without a development team. Pure developers may still prefer Textract's ecosystem. For the Microsoft 365 organization, this is the path of least resistance.

What we like
  • Prebuilt invoice and receipt models at $0.01 per page
  • Integrates with Power Automate and Logic Apps
  • Custom models with a few samples
Watch out for
  • Full application still needs building
  • Volume discounts require commitments
  • Portal experience lags AWS

How we chose

We compared official pricing pages, vendor documentation and third-party pricing research in October 2026, focusing on tools that specifically handle invoice extraction rather than generic OCR. We separated finished platforms (with review workflows and integrations) from raw APIs (where you build the application), because the total cost differs enormously. We did not run accuracy tests. Where vendors publish no pricing, we marked it as See website.

The per-page math that decides everything

Invoice OCR pricing looks chaotic until you convert everything to cost per invoice. Textract, Google and Azure charge about $0.01 per page. Nanonets Starter charges $0.30 per page. Veryfi charges $0.16 per invoice on Starter. Docsumo's $179 plan works out to about $0.18 per page at full utilization.

But the per-invoice cost is only half the equation. A $0.01 API that needs two weeks of engineering and ongoing maintenance is more expensive than a $0.18 platform that works on day one, unless your volume is enormous. The breakeven usually sits around a few thousand invoices a month: below it, buy the platform; above it, build on the API. And always trial on your own messiest invoices, since accuracy on clean PDFs tells you nothing about phone photos of crumpled receipts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best OCR software for invoice processing?

Nanonets is the best pay-as-you-go option at $0.30 per page, Docsumo is the best complete workflow at $179 a month, and Veryfi is the best developer API with a free tier. For enterprise AP at scale, Rossum and ABBYY lead but require custom quotes.

How accurate is invoice OCR in 2026?

Modern AI-based tools claim up to 99% field accuracy on clean invoices, with 70 to 90% straight-through processing (no human touch) on mature implementations. Accuracy drops on handwritten, low-quality or unusual layouts, which is why every tool here includes a human review step.

How much does invoice OCR cost per invoice?

Cloud APIs (AWS, Google, Azure) cost about $0.01 per page. Mid-market platforms run $0.16 to $0.30 per invoice (Veryfi, Nanonets, Docsumo). Enterprise platforms are quote-based but third parties estimate from $1,500 a month for Rossum.

Can OCR software integrate with QuickBooks or Xero?

Yes. Docsumo, Nanonets and Veryfi all offer integrations with major accounting platforms either natively or through Zapier and APIs. Confirm your specific accounting version supports the integration before buying.

Do I need to train the OCR model on my invoices?

No, not with modern tools. Nanonets, Veryfi, Rossum and the cloud prebuilt models work without training. Custom training is available for unusual document types but is optional for standard invoices.

Is my invoice data used to train shared models?

It depends on the vendor. Some vendors explicitly state customer documents are not used to train shared models; others may use data for service improvement unless you opt out. Ask directly and get the answer in writing if this matters to you.
