How we make this list: we compare pricing pages, product documentation and public user reviews. Rankite is independent; if a vendor ever pays for a featured spot, that listing is clearly labeled Partner.
Key takeaways
- Awario at $29 a month is the cheapest credible monitoring tool, with boolean search and sentiment analysis for startups.
- Brand24 at $199 a month is the self-serve sweet spot for small businesses that need real-time alerts without enterprise contracts.
- Mention discontinued its budget self-serve tiers in 2025; it is now a quote-gated product around $599 a month, so older roundups mislead.
- Brandwatch, Meltwater and Talkwalker serve enterprise research and PR teams on custom contracts, typically $10,000-plus a year.
- Sprout Social and Hootsuite suit teams that need monitoring plus publishing in one seat, though listening depth costs extra.

The myth that keeps brands blind is that Google Alerts is enough. It is not, and the gap is bigger than most teams realize. Google Alerts misses most social conversation, catches only a slice of forums and Reddit, tells you nothing about sentiment, and cannot track an untagged brand mention on TikTok or a logo appearing in a YouTube video. The conversations that damage reputations rarely happen in places Google Alerts watches.
The correction is that monitoring is about speed and action, not counting mentions. A dashboard showing ten thousand mentions is trivia. An alert that reaches the comms team within minutes of a complaint going viral is crisis prevention. When you evaluate these tools, judge them on alert latency, sentiment accuracy, source coverage for your specific channels and what happens after a mention is found: can you assign it, reply to it, report on it.
The second misconception is that the budget tools from 2023 still exist at 2023 prices. They do not. Mention killed its self-serve tiers in mid-2025 and now starts around $599 a month on annual contracts. Brand24 moved its entry to $199 a month. The budget tier now belongs to Awario and BrandMentions. Shop from current pricing, not from memory.

Awario is the last true budget option in media monitoring. For $29 a month billed annually, startups get real-time web and social monitoring, sentiment detection, competitor tracking and even a lead-generation module that surfaces people asking for recommendations in your category. Boolean search lets you build precise queries instead of drowning in noise.
The limits are coverage-shaped. The media database is smaller than Brandwatch's or Meltwater's, TikTok is absent entirely, and integrations are thin. But for the small business that needs to know what the internet says about it without a four-figure contract, Awario is the honest answer. The 14-day trial is enough to judge whether the coverage reaches your corners of the web.
What we like- $29 a month is the lowest entry price here
- Boolean search operators for precise queries
- Sentiment analysis and lead discovery included
Watch out for- Smaller media database than enterprise tools
- No TikTok coverage at any tier
- Advanced integrations are limited
Starting price$199/month (billed annually)
Free planFree trial (14 days)
Brand24 is the self-serve standard for companies that have outgrown free tools but cannot justify enterprise contracts. Mentions stream in real time across social, news, blogs, forums and review sites, sentiment analysis works across dozens of languages, and the alerting is fast enough for actual crisis response. The pricing is published and purchasable by credit card, which is rarer than it should be in this market.
The price did move upmarket. At $199 a month billed annually for the entry tier, it is no longer the impulse buy it once was, and teams wanting years of historical data or true video transcription will hit walls. But for ongoing brand tracking with alerts you can act on, Brand24 remains the benchmark that competitors get compared against.
What we like- Fast real-time alerts with solid sentiment in 90+ languages
- Fully self-serve with transparent pricing
- Strong G2 ratings from SMB users
Watch out for- $199 a month entry prices out micro-businesses
- Historical data depth trails enterprise tools
- Video coverage is keyword-based, not transcribed
Starting price$79/month (billed annually)

BrandMentions occupies the gap between Awario and Brand24. The standout feature is historical depth: a decade of mention history lets you research how a narrative developed, not just what happened today. At $79 a month billed annually for the Starter tier, it delivers serious monitoring at less than half of Brand24's entry price.
The tradeoffs are polish and ecosystem. It is a smaller vendor with fewer integrations, and the analytics are less sophisticated than the enterprise tools. But for agencies and mid-size brands that need historical research plus ongoing tracking on a budget, the price-to-depth ratio is the best in this list. Verify the trial covers your needed sources before committing.
What we like- Up to ten years of historical mention data
- $79 a month entry undercuts Brand24
- Real-time web and social tracking
Watch out for- Smaller company with a thinner ecosystem
- Video analysis is captions-based, not true transcription
- No API on lower tiers

Mention requires a correction to every old roundup. The Solo, Pro and ProPlus plans that made it a budget staple are gone, discontinued in July 2025 after Agorapulse acquired the company through a court-ordered process. What remains is a single Company plan, quote-gated and reported around $599 a month on annual contracts, with publishing and engagement features retired entirely in early 2026.
Evaluated as what it is now, a mid-market listening product, it is competent: broad source coverage, real-time alerts, sentiment and influence scoring. But nobody should buy it expecting the old $49 tool. If your budget is under $500 a month, Awario, BrandMentions and Brand24 are the current alternatives. Mention now competes a tier up.
What we like- Extensive source coverage including review sites
- Real-time alerts with influence metrics
- Now backed by Agorapulse's resources
Watch out for- Self-serve tiers discontinued in July 2025
- Current Company plan is quote-gated around $599 a month annual-only
- Publishing features retired in 2026
Starting price$199/seat/month

Sprout Social is for teams where a mention becomes a task. The unified inbox pulls mentions, comments and messages into one queue where the social team can reply, assign and report without switching tools. Sentiment and engagement analytics are strong, and the publishing side means the same team that listens also posts.
The pricing is the honest catch. At $199 per seat per month billed annually, plus extra for advanced listening, a five-person team pays five figures a year before the listening depth matches a dedicated tool. Sprout wins when the workflow is listen, reply, publish, report in one place. Pure research teams get more depth per dollar from Brandwatch or Talkwalker.
What we like- Unified inbox turns mentions into replies in one workflow
- Strong analytics and competitor insights
- Publishing, scheduling and listening in one seat
Watch out for- $199 per seat per month before listening add-ons
- Costs scale brutally with team size
- Listening depth trails dedicated research tools
Starting price$99/user/month (billed annually)

Hootsuite plays the value card against Sprout. At $99 per user per month billed annually, teams get scheduling, publishing and social monitoring in one platform, with deeper listening available through the Talkwalker-powered add-ons. For the social team that needs competent monitoring alongside its publishing workflow, the price gap matters.
The listening is good rather than great. Dedicated research features, historical depth and advanced analytics trail the specialists, and the best listening capabilities sit on higher tiers. Hootsuite fits the team whose primary job is publishing with monitoring as support. Research-first teams should look elsewhere.
What we like- $99 per user per month undercuts Sprout significantly
- Listening via Talkwalker integration on higher tiers
- Scheduling and monitoring in one login
Watch out for- Listening depth depends on tier and the Talkwalker add-on
- Per-user pricing scales with team size
- Analytics trail Sprout's polish

Brandwatch is the research heavyweight. No tool here matches its historical conversation archive, stretching back to 2010, or its analytical depth for consumer intelligence: audience segmentation, trend analysis, image recognition and AI-assisted insight discovery. Global brands run their market research on it.
Everything about it is enterprise. Pricing is custom with a median around $50,000 a year, the platform demands trained analysts, and buying involves a real sales process. Small and mid-size companies will drown in both cost and complexity. But when the question is "what does the market think and how is it changing," Brandwatch is the reference answer.
What we like- Largest conversation database with history back to 2010
- AI sentiment and image recognition
- The standard for consumer intelligence research
Watch out for- Custom pricing with a ~$50,000 annual median
- Requires trained analysts to use well
- Implementation is a serious undertaking

Meltwater is the PR professional's monitoring tool. Its editorial and news coverage is the deepest in the industry, which matters enormously for comms teams tracking print, broadcast and online journalism rather than just social chatter. The platform extends into media outreach and measurement, covering the full PR workflow.
Social-native brands will find the social listening less deep than Brandwatch or Talkwalker, and pricing starts in five figures annually on custom contracts. Meltwater earns its place when traditional and digital media coverage drives the communications strategy. For social-first monitoring, the specialists above deliver more.
What we like- Unmatched global news and editorial media coverage
- PR workflow from monitoring to outreach to measurement
- Strong in regulated and traditional media
Watch out for- Custom pricing typically $10,000-plus a year
- Social listening depth trails Brandwatch
- Contracts draw mixed reviews

Talkwalker built its reputation on global listening: dozens of languages, image recognition that finds your logo in photos nobody tagged, and dashboards flexible enough for complex multinational organizations. The AI capabilities around visual and trend analysis are genuinely ahead of most rivals.
The acquisition by Hootsuite adds uncertainty about the standalone product's future, and pricing is enterprise-custom. Single-market brands will not use half of what they pay for. But for the global brand tracking conversation across twenty markets in fifteen languages, Talkwalker remains one of the two or three credible options.
What we like- Excellent multilingual coverage for global brands
- AI-powered image and video recognition
- Custom dashboards for complex organizations
Watch out for- Enterprise custom pricing
- Now part of Hootsuite, which complicates the product future
- Overkill for single-market brands

Critical Mention covers the medium everyone else ignores: broadcast. Real-time monitoring of TV and radio with closed-caption keyword search means a PR team knows within minutes when a brand gets mentioned on air, with clips ready to share internally. For industries where broadcast still moves reputation, healthcare, finance, politics, this is essential infrastructure.
It is not a social listening tool with broadcast added; it is a broadcast tool with web monitoring attached. Pricing is custom and enterprise-grade, and international coverage is limited. Buy it when broadcast mentions matter to your stakeholders. Everyone else should spend the budget on social and web depth.
What we like- Real-time TV and radio monitoring with closed-caption search
- Broadcast clips ready for reporting
- The standard for broadcast-heavy PR
Watch out for- Custom enterprise pricing
- Limited international broadcast coverage
- Social and web monitoring is secondary
The alert-speed test
Set up the same brand query in your top two contenders during their trials and manufacture a test: publish a post mentioning the brand on a mid-size forum or social account, then time how long each platform takes to surface it. Alert latency varies enormously, from minutes to hours, and it is the single most important operational metric for crisis monitoring.
While the trials run, check sentiment accuracy on your actual mentions. Every vendor demos sentiment on clean examples. Your brand's reality includes sarcasm, industry jargon and ambiguous product names. Pull fifty real mentions and score the sentiment labels yourself. A platform that gets seventy percent right with fast alerts beats one that gets ninety percent right tomorrow.
How we assembled this list
We started from vendor pricing pages and documentation, then cross-checked against October 2026 pricing benchmarks and public reviews on G2 and Capterra. Every published price above reflects 2026 plan pricing, including the post-2025 reality that Mention's self-serve tiers no longer exist and Brand24's entry sits at $199 a month. Where vendors publish no pricing, we say so instead of repeating estimates.
We did not claim hands-on testing of any platform. We weighted monitoring-specific capabilities over adjacent features: source coverage, alert speed, sentiment accuracy, historical depth and broadcast monitoring. Pure social schedulers without real listening and free alert tools without meaningful coverage did not make the cut.
Coverage gaps to check before you pay
Every monitoring tool has blind spots, and vendors bury them. TikTok coverage ranges from genuine video transcription (Meltwater, Talkwalker) to keyword matching on captions (Brand24) to nothing at all (Awario). Private communities, Discord servers and closed groups are largely invisible to all of them. Review sites, forums and regional news vary wildly by vendor.
Map your actual risk surface before buying. A B2B SaaS company lives on G2, Reddit and LinkedIn. A consumer brand lives on TikTok, Instagram and review sites. A regulated company lives in news and broadcast. Ask each vendor to show live results for your brand on your three most important sources during the trial. The demo query is always flattering; your query is the truth.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Alerts enough for brand monitoring?
For catching major news pickups, partially. For everything else, no. It misses most social conversation, has no sentiment analysis, cannot track untagged mentions or logos, and offers no workflow for acting on what it finds. It is a supplement, not a strategy.
How much should a small business budget for media monitoring?
From $29 a month for Awario to $199 for Brand24, depending on alert speed and coverage needs. Most small businesses land between $50 and $200 a month. Below that, combine Google Alerts with manual social searches until the budget exists.
What happened to Mention's cheap plans?
Agorapulse acquired Mention in 2025 and discontinued the Solo, Pro and ProPlus self-serve tiers that July. The remaining Company plan is quote-gated at roughly $599 a month on annual contracts. Any roundup still listing Mention under $100 is out of date.
Do we need broadcast monitoring?
Only if TV and radio mentions move your reputation or your stakeholders ask about them. Consumer brands, healthcare, finance and public affairs often do. Most SaaS and ecommerce companies can skip it and spend the budget on social and web depth.
How accurate is sentiment analysis really?
Good enough for trends, unreliable for individual mentions. Sarcasm, slang and domain jargon defeat every engine some of the time. Use sentiment for directional reporting and crisis triage, and have a human read anything that triggers an alert.
Can one tool replace our social scheduler and our listening platform?
Sometimes. Sprout Social and Hootsuite combine publishing with competent monitoring, which suits teams that reply more than they research. Research-heavy teams need a dedicated listening platform alongside the scheduler. Match the tool to whether your team acts on mentions or studies them.
