How we make this list: we compare pricing pages, product documentation and public user reviews. Rankite is independent; if a vendor ever pays for a featured spot, that listing is clearly labeled Partner.
Key takeaways
- If you already pay for Ahrefs ($29/month Starter) or Semrush ($139.95/month Pro), use their bundled rank trackers before buying a dedicated tool.
- Dedicated trackers win on price per keyword: SE Ranking ($52/month annual, 500 keywords) and Mangools ($29.90/month annual, 200 keywords) cost a fraction of suite pricing.
- Agencies tracking thousands of keywords should compare AccuRanker (from $224/month, on-demand refreshes) and Advanced Web Ranking (from $139/month, 7,000 keywords, unlimited users).
- AI search visibility (ChatGPT, AI Overviews) is now a real feature: Nightwatch and AccuRanker track it alongside classic rankings.

The best keyword rank tracking software
Rank tracking used to be simple: check where you stand on Google once a day. Then local packs, mobile splits, and now AI answers fragmented the whole idea of a ranking, and the tools split with it. Suites bundle tracking as a side feature. Dedicated trackers compete on speed, volume and reporting polish. These nine cover both species, with the real prices and the keyword math that decides which one fits your list.
#1
Ahrefs
Best for: Teams already paying for Ahrefs' backlink and research data
Visit ahrefs.com
Starting price$29/month (Starter, 50 tracked keywords)
Free planYes (free rank tracker for sites you own, limited)
Nobody buys Ahrefs for rank tracking alone, and that is the point. If the subscription already exists for backlinks, keyword research and audits, the Rank Tracker is a capable bonus: Starter at $29 a month covers 50 keywords, Lite at $129 covers 750. The data moat (link index, content database) is unmatched.
As a standalone tracker it is overpriced. Weekly default updates on lower tiers lag the daily trackers, extra seats cost $40 to $60 a month, and there is no white-label reporting. Rule of thumb: if Ahrefs is already in the stack, use its tracker. If rank tracking is the job, buy a dedicated tool and skip the suite.
What we like- The deepest backlink database behind the tracker
- Lite ($129/month) covers 750 keywords with 6 months of history
- Credit-free plans from Standard up
Watch out for- Rank Tracker is a side feature, not the product
- Weekly (not daily) updates on lower tiers
#2
Semrush
Best for: Content teams wanting research, audits and tracking under one login
Visit semrush.com
Starting price$139.95/month (Pro plan)
Free planYes (limited: 1 project, 10 keywords)
Semrush's Position Tracking is the daily-update tracker inside the industry's broadest suite. Pro at $139.95 a month ($117.33 annual) covers 500 keywords daily; Guru at $249.95 covers 1,500 with historical data; Business at $499.95 covers 5,000. One dataset spans keyword research, backlinks, site audits, PPC and social.
The consolidation has a price. Pro lacks the content toolkit and historical data, so serious users land on Guru at roughly $208 a month annual, and additional seats run $45 to $100 each. API access needs Business. For an agency or content team that uses the whole suite, the per-tool cost is reasonable. For pure rank tracking, the dedicated tools below do more per dollar.
What we like- Position Tracking with daily updates inside a full PPC, content and social suite
- Huge keyword database
- Multi-location tracking on Guru
Watch out for- Expensive if tracking is all you need
- Plan names were restructured in 2026, so confirm which ladder your checkout shows
#3
AccuRanker
Best for: Agencies where fresh data and on-demand refreshes matter
Visit accuranker.com
Starting priceFrom $224/month (Professional plan)
Free planNo (14-day free trial, no credit card)
AccuRanker answers "where are we right now" in minutes instead of tomorrow. The on-demand refresh is the killer feature for agencies: a client calls after a launch, you refresh, you answer. Professional from $224 a month covers 2,000 to 5,000 keywords; Expert from $764 covers 10,000 to 25,000. Annual billing saves 10 percent.
The entry price filters the audience. At roughly 11 cents per keyword per month, a 300-keyword small business is the wrong buyer entirely. This is agency and enterprise infrastructure, now with LLM prompt-tracking tiers from $229 a month for AI search visibility. Model it at agency scale and the speed justifies the premium.
What we like- On-demand ranking refreshes on top of daily updates, the fastest data in the category
- Handles very large keyword volumes cleanly
- Looker Studio and API on higher tiers
Watch out for- Rankings only, so most teams pay for a second tool for audits and links
- No plan under 2,000 keywords, which prices out small sites
#4
SE Ranking
Best for: Freelancers and small agencies wanting a full suite cheaply
Visit seranking.com
Starting price$52/month (Essential, billed annually)
Free planNo (14-day free trial, no credit card)
SE Ranking is the value suite. Essential at $52 a month (annual) covers 500 daily-tracked keywords, site audits, keyword research and backlink monitoring in one invoice. Pro at $95.20 covers 2,000 keywords; Business at $207.20 covers 5,000. For a freelancer or small agency, it replaces two or three subscriptions.
The depth ceiling is real: the keyword database and link index do not match the big two, so enterprise SEO teams keep Ahrefs or Semrush alongside. Count your actual keyword list before choosing a tier, because device splits and local variants consume the allowance fast. For everyone under the enterprise tier, the price-to-feature ratio is the best in the category.
What we like- Rank tracking plus audits, research, backlinks and local SEO in one subscription
- Zip-code level local tracking
- White-label reports included
Watch out for- Research and backlink depth trail Ahrefs and Semrush
- Keyword allowances burn faster than expected with competitor and local variants
#5
Nightwatch
Best for: Teams needing daily local data plus AI search visibility
Visit nightwatch.io
Starting priceSee website (pricing varies; confirm at checkout)
Free planNo (14-day free trial, no credit card)
Nightwatch is the tracker for the fragmented SERP. Classic rankings, local packs to ZIP-code granularity, and AI visibility (ChatGPT, Claude, AI Overviews) run in one dashboard, which replaces a separate LLM-monitoring subscription. White-label reporting is included on paid plans, with GA4, Search Console and Looker Studio integrations.
Pricing needs care: the vendor blog advertises one figure while recent reviews of the vendor page show another, so confirm the checkout total before budgeting. Setup takes a day or two. For agencies reporting local SEO plus AI visibility to clients, the combined coverage is currently unique at this tier.
What we like- Daily tracking across Google, Bing, YouTube, DuckDuckGo and Map Pack
- AI visibility tracking (ChatGPT, Claude, AI Overviews) alongside classic ranks
- Local tracking to ZIP level across 107,000-plus locations
Watch out for- Published prices conflict across sources, so verify the checkout total
- Euro billing means USD charges float with exchange rates
Starting price$99/month (Starter, 1,000 terms)
Free planNo
ProRankTracker sells reporting polish. The white-label reports, MyRanks client portal and Looker Studio integration are the most mature in the category, which matters when clients read the reports directly. Starter at $99 a month covers 1,000 terms; Pro at $149 covers 2,000; Agency from $199 scales to 20,000-plus.
You pay for that polish: per keyword, it runs 2 to 3 times some competitors. Terms accounting has quirks (one term per organic keyword, two per AI prompt), so model your list honestly. If budget is the priority, Wincher or SE Ranking track more keywords per dollar. If the client sees the dashboard, ProRankTracker's presentation earns its premium.
What we like- Granular local and mobile split tracking with YouTube and Map Pack
- Mature white-label reports and client portal
- On-demand update credits
Watch out for- Among the priciest dedicated trackers per keyword
- No keyword research or backlink data, so it pairs with a second tool
#7
Mangools
Best for: Solopreneurs wanting one simple, cheap SEO toolkit
Visit mangools.com
Starting price$29.90/month (Basic, billed annually)
Free planYes (limited daily usage across the suite)
Mangools is the toolkit for people who find Ahrefs intimidating. Signup to live ranking data takes under ten minutes, and Basic at $29.90 a month (annual) bundles KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler. Premium at $44.90 covers 700 keywords; Agency at $89.90 covers 1,500. Annual billing saves 35 to 40 percent.
The meters are the catch. Two hundred tracked keywords and 100 research lookups a day on Basic means growing users upgrade fast, and the 48-hour money-back window is short. For a blogger, affiliate site or freelancer learning SEO, the simplicity-to-price ratio is unbeatable. For agencies, it is a starter tool, not a destination.
What we like- Five SEO tools (keyword research, SERP analysis, rank tracking, link analysis, site profiler) on every plan
- Famously easy to learn
- The cheapest credible entry at about a dollar a day
Watch out for- Daily lookup limits (100 a day on Basic) restrict heavy users
- Desktop and mobile tracking consume separate keyword slots
#8
Wincher
Best for: Small teams wanting focused daily tracking without suite bloat
Visit wincher.com
Starting priceFrom $49/month (Basic, 500 keywords)
Free planNo (14-day free trial)
Wincher does one thing and stays out of the way. Basic from $49 a month covers 500 keywords across 10 sites for one user; Standard at $89 adds unlimited sites, multiple users and on-demand refreshes; Professional at $319 covers 5,000 keywords. White-labeled reports start at Standard. Setup takes under an hour.
The tier math pushes most teams to Standard, at which point the gap to SE Ranking's full suite narrows considerably. Count your list including device splits before buying, since desktop and mobile consume separate slots. For straightforward daily tracking with no learning curve, it is the calmest option on this list.
What we like- Clean daily rank tracking with share-of-voice and keyword gap analysis
- WordPress and Yoast integration
- On-demand updates and API from Standard
Watch out for- Basic is single-user with no on-demand updates
- Euro billing floats the USD charge
Starting priceFrom $139/month (Pro, 7,000 keywords)
Free planNo (free trial available)
AWR's economics embarrass the suites. Pro from $139 a month includes 7,000 keywords with unlimited users and unlimited projects; Agency at $279 covers 14,500. Where Ahrefs charges per seat plus per keyword, AWR hands a 20-person agency 7,000 keywords for one flat-ish fee. On-demand hourly updates arrive on higher tiers.
The scope is deliberately narrow: rank tracking done precisely, with local and mobile on all plans and a developer API on Agency-plus. Budget a second tool for audits and backlinks. For the agency tracking thousands of keywords across dozens of clients, the capacity math is the whole argument, and the 30-day money-back guarantee is the most generous trial terms here.
What we like- Best keyword-volume-per-dollar in the category
- Unlimited users and projects on every plan
- AI visibility tracking on all paid plans
- 30-day money-back guarantee
Watch out for- A precision rank tracker, not a suite, so audits and links need a second tool
- Overkill for tracking under 1,000 keywords
How we chose
We started with the categories buyers search: keyword rank tracking software, rank tracker, SERP tracking tool and SEO ranking software. For each candidate we opened the vendor's own pricing page, checked plan names and prices against public reviews on G2 and Capterra and practitioner discussion on Reddit, and compared update frequency, keyword allowances, local and mobile coverage, reporting features and company-size fit. Where a price could not be verified on the vendor's page we wrote "See website" rather than guessing.
What to look for before you buy
Count keywords the way the tool counts them. Desktop and mobile versions of the same keyword consume two slots on most trackers. Local variants (one keyword times ten ZIP codes) multiply fast. AI prompt tracking consumes two terms per prompt on some tools. List your real keywords, multiply by devices and locations, and buy the tier that fits with headroom, because mid-cycle upgrades cost more than starting one tier up.
Then check update frequency and freshness. Daily updates are standard on paid tiers; weekly on entry suite tiers (Ahrefs Starter) is a real limitation for active campaigns. On-demand refreshes (AccuRanker, Wincher Standard, ProRankTracker credits) matter when launches and client calls do not wait for tomorrow's crawl. And confirm reporting: white-label reports, scheduled email delivery and Looker Studio connectors decide whether the tool serves clients directly or just your team.
The suite-or-specialist decision
This category has two valid architectures. Suites (Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, Mangools) bundle tracking with research, audits and backlinks: one login, one invoice, shallower tracking. Specialists (AccuRanker, ProRankTracker, Wincher, Nightwatch, AWR) do tracking precisely: daily updates, local granularity, on-demand refreshes, client-ready reports.
Most buyers should pick one of each only if the budget allows; otherwise pick by the primary job. If research and audits drive your SEO, buy the suite and accept its tracker. If rankings are the deliverable (agencies, local SEO, affiliate portfolios), buy the specialist and pair it with a cheap research tool. The most expensive setup is the $139-a-month suite whose tracker you never open because you also bought the $224-a-month specialist.
Frequently asked questions
How many keywords should I track?
Fewer than you think. Track money keywords (pages that drive revenue), competitor gap keywords you are actively targeting, and a sample of long-tail for trend direction. Most small businesses need 100 to 500. Agencies track thousands because clients pay per keyword. Remember that device splits and local variants multiply the count on every tool here.
How often should rankings update?
Daily for active campaigns, product launches and client reporting. Weekly is fine for stable content sites where nothing changes fast. On-demand refreshes matter most right after site changes, migrations and launches. Do not pay for hourly updates unless someone acts on hourly data.
What is AI search visibility tracking?
Tracking whether and how your brand appears in AI-generated answers (ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews) rather than classic blue-link rankings. Nightwatch, AccuRanker and AWR now include it. It matters because a growing share of informational queries never produce a click on a classic result. If your content strategy targets informational keywords, add it to the requirements list.
Can I track local rankings by ZIP code?
Yes. SE Ranking, Nightwatch, ProRankTracker and AWR all offer ZIP or postcode-level local tracking, and Nightwatch covers 107,000-plus locations. Local packs behave differently from organic results, so confirm the tool tracks the Map Pack separately rather than blending it into organic positions.
Is a free rank tracker enough?
For a hobby site, yes: Ahrefs' free tracker for owned sites and Mangools' limited free tier cover the basics. For business use, no: free tiers cap keywords, lack daily updates and exclude white-label reporting. The cheapest credible paid options are Mangools ($29.90/month annual) and SE Ranking ($52/month annual).
