How we make this list: we compare pricing pages, product documentation and public user reviews. Rankite is independent; if a vendor ever pays for a featured spot, that listing is clearly labeled Partner.

Best Feature Flag Software in 2026: 9 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • Pricing models are the real comparison: per-seat (GrowthBook $40, Unleash $75), per-MAU or usage (LaunchDarkly, Statsig), and flat or fetch-based (ConfigCat from $110/mo, Flagsmith $45/mo).
  • Free tiers are generous: LaunchDarkly Developer, Statsig, PostHog (1M events/mo), ConfigCat, Flagsmith, GrowthBook self-hosted and Unleash self-hosted all start at $0.
  • Split no longer exists as a standalone product; Harness acquired it in 2024 and folded it into Harness FME ($100/month per module).
  • Statsig is now owned by OpenAI, which matters if you are signing a multi-year commitment.

The best feature flag software

A feature flag is a useful fiction: the code ships, but the feature does not. The deploy goes out on Tuesday, the feature turns on for 5 percent of users on Thursday, and if something breaks at midnight, someone flips it off without a redeploy. Nine tools below sell versions of that fiction, and they differ less on the flag itself than on what surrounds it: experimentation, analytics, governance, and above all the pricing model. Prices were checked against vendor pricing pages and current third-party reporting in October 2026.

#1

LaunchDarkly

Best for: Enterprises needing governance and audit trails
Visit launchdarkly.com
Starting priceUsage-based from $10/service connection/month (Foundation)
Free planYes
LaunchDarkly homepage

LaunchDarkly is the enterprise standard for feature management: sophisticated targeting rules, 30-plus SDKs, scheduled rollouts, kill switches, audit logs and approval workflows that satisfy procurement and compliance teams. The 2026 pricing is usage-based rather than per-seat: a free Developer tier covers small projects, Foundation starts around $10 per service connection per month plus per-1,000 client-side MAU charges, and Enterprise is custom.

The pricing model is the main criticism: per-MAU billing means costs grow with your user base even if your flag usage stays flat, and the 2026 Guardian tier for experimentation sits higher still. LaunchDarkly suits large or regulated organizations where governance, audit trails and SDK breadth justify the bill. Smaller teams should start with the free tier and compare Statsig or ConfigCat before committing.

What we like
  • The category-defining targeting engine and SDK coverage
  • Audit logs and approval workflows built for compliance
  • Free Developer tier to start
Watch out for
  • Usage-based pricing is hard to forecast and punishes growth
  • Experimentation is an enterprise add-on
  • The most expensive option at every scale
#2

Statsig

Best for: Teams where experimentation is the center of gravity
Visit statsig.com
Starting price$150/month (Pro)
Free planYes
Statsig homepage

Statsig inverts the category's pricing: flag and config checks are free and unlimited on every plan, and you pay for analytics events. The free tier covers millions of events a month with unlimited seats, and Pro starts at $150 a month. Built by ex-Facebook experimentation engineers, the platform's real strength is the stats engine: every flag can become an experiment with automatic metric tracking, variance reduction and sequential testing.

The honest framing is that flags are the on-ramp to the experimentation platform, not the product. Teams that only need toggles will find simpler tools cheaper. Statsig suits product and engineering teams that run real A/B tests weekly and want statistical rigor without enterprise pricing. Note the OpenAI acquisition when evaluating roadmap independence.

What we like
  • Feature flags free and unlimited on every tier
  • Rigorous experimentation engine with CUPED and sequential testing
  • Generous free tier
Watch out for
  • Now owned by OpenAI, a real consideration for multi-year deals
  • Flags are the on-ramp to a bigger platform
  • OpenFeature support is thin
#3

ConfigCat

Best for: Teams wanting simple flags with predictable billing
Visit configcat.com
Starting price$110/month (Pro)
Free planYes
ConfigCat homepage

ConfigCat is the simplicity pick with rare pricing transparency: its own pricing page lists Free at $0, Pro at $110 a month, Smart at $325, Enterprise at $900 and Dedicated at $4,500, all with unlimited seats, unlimited MAUs and unlimited flag reads. You pay by config JSON download volume, which is predictable and does not punish team or user growth.

The free tier's 10-flag limit is the wall most teams hit first, and there is no built-in experimentation depth. But for teams that want straightforward flags with a bill they can forecast, ConfigCat is the cheapest serious option. It suits indie teams and small companies that find LaunchDarkly's usage model unpredictable and Statsig's platform more than they need.

What we like
  • Published pricing on its own pricing page with no sales call
  • Unlimited seats on every plan
  • Predictable fetch-based pricing
Watch out for
  • Free tier caps at 10 flags, which teams hit fast
  • No native experimentation suite
  • Smaller ecosystem than the leaders
#4

Unleash

Best for: Regulated teams wanting open-source self-hosting
Visit getunleash.io
Starting price$75/seat/month (Cloud, 5-seat minimum)
Free planYes
Unleash homepage

Unleash is the open-source original, running since 2014 with the largest OSS feature-flag community. The self-hosted edition is free with unlimited flags and environments, which makes it the default for fintech, health-data and EU teams where flag data cannot leave the company's infrastructure. The managed Cloud pay-as-you-go tier runs $75 per seat per month with a 5-seat minimum, and Enterprise adds governance workflows, FedRAMP-ready infrastructure and air-gapped deployments.

It is flags-first: no native experimentation suite, so pair it with GrowthBook or Statsig if you need stats depth. Unleash suits regulated or cost-conscious teams that want open-source control and are willing to operate the infrastructure. Note the 2026 licensing change: newer source moved to AGPLv3, though official Docker images remain Apache 2.0.

What we like
  • The longest-running open-source flag platform (Apache 2.0 lineage)
  • Full self-hosting for data sovereignty
  • Granular project and environment isolation
Watch out for
  • Cloud pricing at $75/seat is steep
  • No native experimentation suite
  • The open-source tier is limited to 1 project and 2 environments
#5

Flagsmith

Best for: Flexible deployment: SaaS, private cloud or on-prem
Visit flagsmith.com
Starting price$45/month (Start-Up)
Free planYes
Flagsmith homepage

Flagsmith's pitch is deployment flexibility: the same open-source core runs as SaaS, in your private cloud, or on-prem, which suits security-conscious teams that want options. The Start-Up plan at $45 a month covers three team members with unlimited projects and environments, and the free tier handles 50K requests a month. Real-time flag synchronization and native product-analytics integrations round out a clean, modern product.

As a bootstrapped, profitable company, Flagsmith markets itself as free from board-mandated price hikes, a pointed contrast with venture-backed rivals. It suits teams that want self-hosting without giving up SaaS quality, and companies that value vendor independence. Experimentation-heavy teams should look at GrowthBook or Statsig instead.

What we like
  • Open-source core with SaaS, private cloud and on-prem options
  • Real-time flag updates across platforms
  • Bootstrapped and profitable, not VC-funded
Watch out for
  • Free tier caps at 50K requests a month
  • Smaller company than the leaders
  • Experimentation is lighter than Statsig or GrowthBook
#6

GrowthBook

Best for: Open-source teams wanting flags plus experimentation
Visit growthbook.io
Starting price$40/seat/month (Cloud Pro)
Free planYes
GrowthBook homepage

GrowthBook combines feature flags with serious experimentation in an open-source package. The warehouse-native approach runs experiments inside your own data warehouse, which data teams love, and the stats engine includes sequential testing and CUPED variance reduction. Cloud Starter is free for 3 users, Cloud Pro runs $40 per seat per month, and the self-hosted edition is free with unlimited users.

Per-seat pricing creates the category's familiar perverse incentive: teams limit who can manage flags, which slows releases. But for open-source-leaning teams that want experimentation built in rather than bolted on, GrowthBook is the strongest option. It suits data-mature startups and mid-size companies that run experiments as part of every release.

What we like
  • Open-source core (MIT) with warehouse-native experimentation
  • Free Cloud Starter for small teams
  • Full self-hosting available
Watch out for
  • Per-seat pricing discourages broad team access
  • Governance features arrived later than LaunchDarkly's
  • Smaller vendor with less enterprise proof
#7

PostHog

Best for: Product teams wanting flags inside an analytics platform
Visit posthog.com
Starting price$0 (free tier, then usage-based)
Free planYes
PostHog homepage

PostHog's argument is consolidation: instead of paying for analytics, flags, session replay and experiments separately, you get one platform with one usage-based bill. Feature flags are genuinely strong, with local evaluation, multivariate flags, percentage rollouts and cohort targeting, and the free tier covers up to 1 million events a month. The open-source edition allows self-hosting.

The trade-off is focus: PostHog will never be as flag-obsessed as LaunchDarkly. But if flags are a small slice of your stack and you want to evaluate whether a feature actually changes user behavior without stitching tools together, the bundle wins on total cost. PostHog suits product-led teams already using or considering the platform for analytics.

What we like
  • Flags bundled with product analytics, session replay and experiments
  • Generous free tier up to 1M events a month
  • Open-source with transparent pricing
Watch out for
  • Flags are one product among many, not the company's sole focus
  • Advanced experimentation sits on paid tiers
  • Thinner OpenFeature ecosystem coverage
#8

DevCycle

Best for: Developer-first teams wanting lightweight Git-style flags
Visit devcycle.com
Starting price$10/user/month (Startup)
Free planYes
DevCycle homepage

DevCycle is the developer's flag tool: lightweight, fast SDKs, Git-style workflows for managing flags as code, and pricing that starts at $10 a user a month on the Startup tier with a free tier covering 1,000 MAU. It does the core job, toggles, targeting, percentage rollouts, without the platform weight of LaunchDarkly or Statsig.

It will not satisfy enterprise governance checklists or experimentation-heavy product teams. DevCycle suits small engineering teams that want flags in their existing Git workflow, minimal dashboard ceremony, and a bill that scales with the team rather than with MAUs. If you outgrow it, the migration path to Unleash or LaunchDarkly is well trodden.

What we like
  • Lightweight, Git-based developer workflows
  • Ultra-low-latency SDKs
  • Simple pricing that developers understand
Watch out for
  • Smaller feature surface than the leaders
  • Less enterprise governance
  • Thinner analytics than the experimentation-first tools
#9

Harness FME

Best for: DevOps teams already on Harness wanting flags in the pipeline
Visit harness.io
Starting price$100/month per module (Team)
Free planYes
Harness FME homepage

Harness FME (Feature Management and Experimentation) is what Split became after Harness acquired it in June 2024: Split's data-driven flag management and metric impact analysis folded into the Harness DevOps platform. Team tier runs $100 a month per module, with a free tier covering limited service instances and developers.

Nobody should adopt Harness for flags alone; the value is flags inside the deployment pipeline, with canary verification and progressive delivery in one system. It suits DevOps teams already running Harness for CI/CD who want feature management without a second vendor. Everyone else should pick a dedicated flag tool.

What we like
  • Flags integrated with the full CI/CD pipeline
  • Split's experimentation DNA folded in
  • Sensible for teams already committed to Harness
Watch out for
  • An enterprise module, not a standalone flag product
  • Pricing is per-module on top of the platform
  • Low indie appeal

The pricing models, decoded

Feature flag pricing comes in four shapes, and the shape matters more than the sticker price. Per-seat (GrowthBook $40, Unleash Cloud $75, DevCycle $10) is simple but punishes broad access: teams gatekeep flag permissions to save money, which defeats the purpose. Per-MAU or usage-based (LaunchDarkly, Statsig's event model, PostHog) scales with success: your bill grows when your user base grows, even if your flag count stays flat.

Fetch or request-based pricing (ConfigCat's config downloads, Flagsmith's request tiers) is the most predictable for stable architectures but can surprise if you increase polling frequency. Flat tiers (Harness per-module) are simplest of all. Before shortlisting, model your bill at 10x your current scale: the tool that is cheapest at 10,000 users is rarely the cheapest at 1 million.

Also watch the free tier walls: ConfigCat's 10-flag limit, Flagsmith's 50K requests, Unleash's 1-project self-host limit. Free tiers are genuine on-ramps, but know which wall you will hit first and what the other side costs.

How we chose

We built the longlist from developer-focused reviews, G2 and SaaS comparison data, open-source community signals and engineering blog consensus, then verified prices on each vendor's own pricing page where available and against current third-party reporting in October 2026 for the rest. We required real feature flag products with maintained SDKs, mixing enterprise platforms, open-source options and experimentation-led tools, and we excluded pure A/B testing tools without flagging and remote-config-only services. No vendor paid for placement and we did not run hands-on trials; the write-ups reflect published facts and reviewer consensus.

Frequently asked questions

What is feature flag software?

It is a system for toggling features on or off in production without redeploying code. Teams use flags for gradual rollouts, kill switches, A/B testing, trunk-based development and targeting features to specific user segments. The software provides the flag dashboard, targeting rules, SDKs and audit history.

How much does feature flag software cost?

Verified entry points in October 2026: DevCycle $10/user/mo, LaunchDarkly Foundation from about $10/service connection/mo (usage-based), GrowthBook Cloud Pro $40/seat/mo, Flagsmith Start-Up $45/mo, Unleash Cloud $75/seat/mo, ConfigCat Pro $110/mo, Harness FME $100/mo per module, Statsig Pro $150/mo. Most offer free tiers; enterprise plans are custom.

Is there free feature flag software?

Yes, and the free tiers here are unusually generous. LaunchDarkly, Statsig, PostHog (1M events/mo), ConfigCat, Flagsmith, GrowthBook and Unleash all offer free plans, and Unleash, Flagsmith and GrowthBook can be self-hosted free. Open-source options mean you can run flags at zero software cost indefinitely if you operate the infrastructure.

What happened to Split?

Harness acquired Split in June 2024 and folded it into Harness FME (Feature Management and Experimentation). Split no longer exists as a standalone product; the old split.io pricing page redirects to Harness. Teams evaluating Split-era comparisons should evaluate Harness FME instead.

Should we self-host our feature flags?

Self-hosting (Unleash, Flagsmith, GrowthBook) gives you data sovereignty and zero software cost, which matters for regulated industries and EU data-residency requirements. The trade-off is operational burden: you run the database, backups and upgrades. Most teams under 50 engineers are better off on a managed tier until compliance demands otherwise.

How do feature flags differ from A/B testing tools?

Feature flags control which code path users see; A/B testing measures which path performs better. Many tools here do both: Statsig, GrowthBook and PostHog bundle rigorous experimentation with flags, while Unleash, ConfigCat and Flagsmith are flags-first. If experiments are your center of gravity, pick an experimentation-led tool.
