Best AI Document Processing Tools in 2026: 8 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • ABBYY Vantage and Hyperscience are the enterprise platforms: governed, accurate and quote priced, built for millions of pages and strict audit needs.
  • Rossum is the accounts payable specialist, with published reporting putting contracts from about 18,000 dollars per year.
  • Nanonets is the fastest start for mid size teams, with a free tier and pay as you go around 30 cents per page.
  • The cloud APIs from Amazon, Microsoft and Google charge roughly 10 dollars per 1,000 pages for form and invoice extraction, but you build the review workflow yourself.
  • Judge every tool on your own worst documents. Vendor accuracy figures come from their best samples, never yours.

The best AI document processing tools

#1

ABBYY Vantage

Best for: Enterprise document operations
4.3/5 on G2 (2 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit abbyy.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
ABBYY Vantage homepage

ABBYY is the incumbent. Vantage packages its capture technology as low code skills an operations team assembles: classify the document, extract the fields, validate against rules, route the exceptions. For regulated industries the governance and audit trail are the reason to pay platform money.

Expect a platform buying process. Pricing is by committed page volume, services are part of most deals, and the payoff arrives at scale across many document types rather than on the first invoice flow.

What we like
  • Decades of OCR and capture experience behind the platform, a skills model with prebuilt extraction for more than 200 document types in current comparisons, classification, splitting and validation in one governed workflow, quality analytics and integrations with the major automation platforms
Watch out for
  • Pricing is quote based on annual page volume, with buyer data suggesting a few cents per page at enterprise volumes before services, implementation usually needs professional services and takes months, more platform than a single use case needs
#2

Hyperscience

Best for: High compliance back office processing
4.6/5 on G2 (54 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit hyperscience.ai
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Hyperscience homepage

Hyperscience sells supervision as much as extraction. Its design assumes machines will misread things and builds the correction loop into the product, with reviewers teaching the system as they work. In claims and government processing, where an error has legal weight, that is the right shape.

The cost is enterprise in every sense: custom contracts, guided implementation, and a platform team on your side. Teams processing a few thousand pages a month should look down this list instead.

What we like
  • Built around human in the loop supervision, so low confidence fields go to reviewers with the context they need, strong record in government, insurance and banking back offices, handles handwriting and poor quality scans better than most, accuracy reporting is measured against human keying baselines
Watch out for
  • Custom enterprise pricing with no public figures, implementation is a programme, not a pilot you run alone, strongest on structured back office work, less aimed at developer led use cases, smaller ecosystem than ABBYY or UiPath
#3

Rossum

Best for: Invoice and accounts payable automation
4.5/5 on G2 (127 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit rossum.ai
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo
Rossum homepage

Rossum is the specialist pick for the most common document job in business: the supplier invoice. Its extraction, validation and approval flow assume an accounts payable team and an ERP, and it is better at that one job than general platforms usually manage.

Buy it for AP and judge it on straight through processing rates against your real invoice mix, including your worst suppliers. Ask what happens to the invoices it cannot read, because that queue is your team's new job.

What we like
  • Purpose built for invoices and purchase orders rather than documents in general, review screens designed for AP clerks, with validation against ERP data, current comparisons put contracts from about 18,000 dollars per year, learns from corrections without template building
Watch out for
  • The specialism is the limit: claims, contracts and forms belong on other tools, annual contracts start at a level small AP teams cannot justify, pricing is not published on its own site, so the figures here are reported, workflow depth beyond AP is thinner
#4

Nanonets

Best for: Mid market automation with fast setup
4.7/5 on G2 (97 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit nanonets.com
Starting priceFree tier, then usage based
Free planYes

Nanonets is where mid size teams start. Upload samples, train a model, connect the workflow, and you are processing in days. The free tier and transparent usage pricing remove the procurement project that enterprise platforms require.

Do the volume maths early. At tens of thousands of pages a month, 30 cents a page becomes a serious line item, and the cloud APIs below undercut it by an order of magnitude for teams willing to build.

What we like
  • Free tier and pay as you go around 30 cents per page let a team start without a contract, custom models train quickly on sample documents, workflows and approvals included, not just extraction, popular with finance and logistics teams automating invoices, receipts and orders
Watch out for
  • Per page pricing gets expensive at high volume compared with cloud APIs, accuracy depends on training samples you provide, enterprise governance is lighter than ABBYY or Hyperscience, costs need watching because usage billing rewards nobody for inefficiency
#5

UiPath Document Understanding

Best for: Teams already running UiPath automation
4.6/5 on G2 (22 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit uipath.com
Starting priceSee website
Free planNo

UiPath Document Understanding is the consolidation pick. If your organisation already runs UiPath robots, adding document reading inside the same platform beats bolting on a separate IDP vendor, and the validation workflow is already familiar to your automation team.

If you do not own UiPath, start elsewhere. The platform commitment is the price of admission, and standalone IDP tools or cloud APIs reach a first use case faster and cheaper.

What we like
  • Document processing inside the automation platform many enterprises already own, so extracted data flows straight into existing robots and processes, strong model options including generative extraction, human validation built into the same studio tooling, one vendor and one contract for RPA plus IDP
Watch out for
  • Makes little sense bought alone
  • The value depends on owning UiPath, licensing across the platform is complex and quote based, extraction quality varies by model choice and setup, your team needs UiPath skills to get the best from it
#6

Amazon Textract

Best for: AWS native extraction at page prices
4.3/5 on G2 (27 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit aws.amazon.com
Starting price$1.50 per 1,000 pages for text
Free planYes

Textract is the builder's option on AWS. The pricing is public and tiny per page, and for a team with engineers it is often the cheapest route to a working extraction pipeline.

Be honest about the build. The API returns data. Everything an AP clerk touches, the exception queue, the matching, the audit trail, is your project. At low volume that trade wins easily; at enterprise volume, compare it against a platform's total cost, not its page price.

What we like
  • Published per page pricing with a limited free tier: text detection starts around 1.50 dollars per 1,000 pages and form and expense features around 10 dollars per 1,000 pages in October 2026 reporting, scales without contracts or minimums, expense and invoice analysis is purpose built, deep AWS integration with S3, Lambda and Step Functions
Watch out for
  • It is an API, not a workflow: review screens, validation rules and ERP write back are yours to build, accuracy on messy real world documents needs your own testing, costs are low per page but the engineering around it is not, handwriting and complex tables are add on features at higher page rates
#7

Microsoft Azure Document Intelligence

Best for: Microsoft centric organisations
Visit azure.microsoft.com
Starting price$10 per 1,000 pages for prebuilt forms
Free planYes

Azure Document Intelligence is Textract's mirror for Microsoft shops, with one practical edge: the Power Platform connection. A finance team can go from scanned invoice to an approval flow with little code, which no raw API matches.

Pricing needs care at the feature level. Simple reads are cheap; the richer extraction features cost several times more per page. Test your exact document types and read the meter on the test, not the brochure.

What we like
  • Prebuilt models for invoices, receipts, ID cards and more at around 10 dollars per 1,000 pages in current pricing reports, a free tier lets you test on real documents before paying, custom models train on your own forms, sits naturally inside Azure and Power Platform, so extracted data can drive Power Automate flows without code
Watch out for
  • Still an API and studio, not a finished business workflow, per page prices for some features run higher, up to about 50 dollars per 1,000 pages for complex extraction in 2026 comparisons, best value depends on already living in the Microsoft cloud, accuracy varies by document quality like every tool here
#8

Google Document AI

Best for: Google Cloud teams using managed parsers
4.2/5 on G2 (37 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit cloud.google.com
Starting price$10 per 1,000 pages for invoice parsing
Free planYes

Google Document AI closes the cloud trio. Its parser library is broad, and for teams already on Google Cloud it is the natural default, with custom extractors improving on the generic models over time.

Choose between the three cloud APIs on your existing cloud and your team's skills, not on small per page differences. Their prices cluster together; your integration costs will not.

What we like
  • A library of specialised parsers, including invoice and expense, at around 10 dollars per 1,000 pages in current reporting, custom extractors can be trained and tuned in the console, BigQuery and Vertex AI integration suits teams building wider AI pipelines, pay as you go with a limited free tier for evaluation
Watch out for
  • Same build it yourself reality as the other cloud APIs, parser quality varies by document type and language, pricing differs per processor, so costs need modelling per document type, human review tooling exists but the full business workflow remains your project

How we chose

We compared document processing tools a buyer can adopt in October 2026 across the two shapes of this market: full platforms with review workflows, and cloud APIs priced per page. Pricing comes from vendor pages and current comparison reporting; where a vendor publishes nothing, the field says See website, and reported contract figures are labelled as reported. Accuracy percentages from vendor marketing were deliberately not used as ranking evidence, because they are measured on vendor chosen documents. We did not process documents through any tool for this guide.

How to buy document processing without buying a demo result

Test on your worst documents. Every vendor demo uses clean samples. Bring the faded scan, the photographed receipt, the supplier whose invoices break every template, and the handwriting. The tool that handles your worst 10 percent is the tool you are actually buying.

Price the whole workflow, not the page. An API at 10 dollars per 1,000 pages looks free next to a platform contract, until you add the review screens, validation logic, ERP integration and maintenance your team must build. At high volume the platform often wins on total cost. At low volume the API usually does.

Measure straight through processing, not accuracy. The business number is what share of documents post with no human touch, and what the exceptions cost to clear. A tool at 98 percent field accuracy can still touch every document if its errors land on your critical fields.

Keep a human in the loop for money documents. Payments, claims and contracts carry error costs no accuracy figure erases. Every serious platform here supports review queues; budget the reviewers as part of the system, not as a failure of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between OCR and AI document processing?

OCR reads the text on a page. Document processing goes further: it classifies the document, extracts named fields such as totals and dates, validates them against rules or your ERP, and routes exceptions to a person. OCR is one component inside every tool in this list.

How much does document processing cost?

Cloud APIs charge roughly 1.50 dollars per 1,000 pages to read text and about 10 to 50 dollars per 1,000 pages for field and form extraction. Mid market platforms charge per page at higher rates with workflow included, around 30 cents per page pay as you go at Nanonets. Enterprise platforms such as ABBYY and Rossum are annual contracts, with Rossum reported from about 18,000 dollars per year.

How accurate are these tools?

On clean, common documents, very accurate. On poor scans, handwriting and unusual layouts, much less so, and vendor percentages are measured on their own samples. The only figure that matters is performance on your documents, which is why every serious evaluation uses your files.

Can these tools handle handwriting?

To a degree. ABBYY and Azure include handwriting recognition, and Hyperscience built its name partly on hard documents, but neat print will always beat cursive scrawl. Test handwriting specifically if it matters to your workflow, and plan human review for it.

Should we build on a cloud API or buy a platform?

Build on an API if you have engineers, moderate volume and a narrow document set. Buy a platform if you need review workflows, audit trails, many document types or business users running the system. Most enterprises end up with a platform; most small teams should start with an API or Nanonets.
