The CTR-by-position benchmark used here

This tool uses First Page Sage's 2026 organic click-through rate benchmark, which aggregates data from Backlinko, Sistrix, Wordstream, BrightLocal and LocalIQ alongside First Page Sage's own analysis. The benchmark applies to "clean" Google results pages with no other elements, meaning no maps, images, video or shopping results competing for attention: position 1 at 39.8%, position 2 at 18.7%, position 3 at 10.2%, tapering down to 1.6% by position 10.

No single CTR-by-position study is exactly right for every keyword, since actual click behavior depends heavily on search intent, brand recognition and what else is showing on the page. This benchmark is a reasonable industry-standard starting point for estimating traffic potential, not a precise prediction for any one keyword.

Why your actual CTR will vary

AI Overviews now appear on a meaningful share of Google results pages, and industry data suggests position 1 CTR can drop from around 39.8% on a clean SERP to roughly 19% when an AI Overview is present, since a portion of searchers get their answer without clicking through at all. A local pack, a featured snippet, or heavy ad presence above the organic results can compress organic CTR at every position in a similar way.

Branded queries also tend to run well above these benchmarks, since searchers already intend to click a specific, known result, while broad informational queries often run below them. Use this calculator to compare positions directionally, and pair it with your own Search Console CTR data whenever it is available for a more accurate picture.

FAQ

SERP CTR by Position Calculator: questions, answered

Where do these CTR-by-position numbers come from?
This calculator uses First Page Sage's 2026 organic CTR benchmark study, which aggregates and cross-references data from Backlinko, Sistrix, Wordstream, BrightLocal and LocalIQ. The figures apply to clean Google results pages without maps, images, video or shopping results competing for clicks.
Why does my actual CTR differ from the benchmark?
Actual CTR depends on factors this benchmark cannot capture for any specific keyword, including whether an AI Overview, featured snippet or local pack appears, how compelling your title and meta description are, and whether the query is branded or purely informational. Treat the benchmark as a directional starting point, not an exact prediction.
Does ranking position 1 always mean the most clicks?
Usually, but not always. If position 1 is occupied by a competitor with a much more compelling title and description, or if an AI Overview or featured snippet sits above it and satisfies the searcher's question directly, a lower position with a stronger snippet can sometimes out-click a weaker position 1 listing.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a directional estimate built on a published industry benchmark, not a guarantee for any specific keyword. For the most accurate picture of your own CTR by position, check the Performance report in Google Search Console, which reflects your site's actual click behavior rather than an industry-wide average.
