An llms.txt file is a plain-markdown file you place at yoursite.com/llms.txt that tells AI crawlers and assistants which pages on your site matter most and what each one covers. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in September 2024 as a clean, machine-readable map of your best content, the same idea as an XML sitemap but written for large language models instead of search engine bots. The generator above builds a valid one in seconds.

What goes in an llms.txt file

The format is deliberately simple. A valid file has an H1 with your brand name, an optional one-line summary in a blockquote, then H2 sections containing bullet lists of links. Each link uses the pattern - [Title](URL): note.

  • H1 title. Your brand or project name, on the first line, after a single hash.
  • Blockquote summary. One sentence describing what you do, after a > symbol.
  • Section headings. Group links under H2 headings like Docs, Products or Optional.
  • Link lines. A markdown link plus an optional note explaining the page.
  • Optional section. A common convention for links a model can skip if short on context.

Why llms.txt matters in 2026

AI assistants are now a real discovery channel. OpenAI reported ChatGPT reaching around 800 million weekly active users in late 2025, and Google said its AI Overviews reach more than 1.5 billion users a month across over 100 countries. At the same time, Brandlight research found the overlap between Google's top organic results and the sources AI engines cite fell from about 70% to under 20% in a year, so being easy for a model to read and quote is its own job now.

One honest caveat: llms.txt is a proposed convention, not a guaranteed-honored standard, and the major AI crawlers do not all formally support it yet. Treat it as low-effort insurance that pairs with the work that actually drives AI citations: answer-first content, schema and brand authority. FAQ

llms.txt Generator: questions, answered

What is an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is a plain-markdown file at the root of your site, yoursite.com/llms.txt, that lists your most important pages and a short description of each, written for AI assistants and crawlers. Proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in September 2024, it works like a sitemap aimed at large language models rather than search engines, helping them find and understand your best content.
Where do I put the llms.txt file?
Place it in the root directory of your domain so it is reachable at yoursite.com/llms.txt, exactly like robots.txt. Save the output from the generator above as a file named llms.txt, then upload it to your web root via your hosting file manager, FTP, or your CMS. Some teams also add a more detailed llms-full.txt alongside it.
Is llms.txt an official standard?
Not yet. It is a proposed convention introduced in September 2024 and adopted by a growing number of sites, but the major AI crawlers do not all formally honor it. It is low-effort to add and does no harm, so treat it as sensible insurance rather than a guaranteed ranking or citation factor.
What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?
Robots.txt tells crawlers which URLs they may or may not access, controlling crawling. llms.txt does the opposite job: it highlights the content you most want AI assistants to read and understand, in clean markdown. One restricts access, the other curates and explains your best pages. Most sites benefit from having both.
Will llms.txt get my site cited by ChatGPT?
On its own, no. An llms.txt file makes your key pages easier for a model to find and parse, but citations are driven by answer-first content, clear structure, schema and brand authority across trusted sources. Add llms.txt as one small signal, then do the content and authority work that actually earns AI citations.
