AI visibility is whether ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity mention or cite your brand when people ask for recommendations in your category. It matters because a growing share of buying decisions now starts inside an AI answer instead of a list of blue links: OpenAI has publicly reported roughly 800 million weekly ChatGPT users, and many of them ask exactly the kind of "who should I hire" and "what is the best" questions your customers used to type into Google. The checker above scores you on the 10 signals that most reliably predict whether AI engines know, trust and recommend your brand. A score of 80 or higher means you are an AI-visible brand; below 50 means AI engines effectively do not know you exist.

How the 10 checks map to how LLMs pick brands

AI engines surface brands through three mechanisms, and each check above feeds at least one of them. First, training data mentions: models like ChatGPT learn which brands belong to which categories from directories, listicles, reviews and press, which is what the directory, review and branded-search checks measure. Second, retrieval citations: AI Overviews and Perplexity fetch live pages and cite the ones that answer the question fastest, which is why answer-first copy, schema markup and unique first-hand content score points. Notably, Brandlight research found the overlap between top Google results and the sources AI engines cite fell from around 70% to under 20%, so ranking well on Google no longer guarantees citation. Third, entity clarity: a complete Google Business Profile and Organization schema tell models exactly who you are, where you operate and what you sell, so they can match you to the right prompts. This is the discipline of answer engine optimization, and it overlaps with classic SEO without being the same thing.

What to do about a low score

  1. Test the engines yourself. Ask ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity the 5 questions your best customer would ask. Record who gets named instead of you; those are your real competitors now.
  2. Make your money pages answer-first. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences of every service page, then support it. LLMs quote pages that resolve the query immediately.
  3. Add schema markup. Organization, FAQ and Service schema are low-effort and give engines machine-readable facts about your business.
  4. Win third-party mentions. Get into the directories and "best of" listicles AI already cites for your category; they carry your brand into both training data and retrieval.
  5. Stack reviews and reply to all of them. Volume, recency and owner replies all feed local AI answers.
  6. Recheck monthly. AI answers change far faster than rankings, so put the test from step one on a recurring calendar slot.

Working the list in that order moves the score fastest because the early steps create the evidence the later ones amplify. If you would rather see exactly which prompts your brand is missing from and what it will take to fix it, request a free AI visibility audit and we will run the tests for you.

FAQ

AI Brand Visibility Checker: questions, answered

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Ask it directly: open ChatGPT and type the question your customer would, such as 'best [your service] in [your city]' or 'which [your category] company should I use'. Run 5 to 10 variations, because answers vary by phrasing. If your brand never appears, you have an AI visibility problem; the 10-point checker above shows which signal to fix first.
What is a good AI visibility score?
80 or higher out of 100 on this checker means you are an AI-visible brand covering the signals LLMs use to recommend businesses. 50 to 79 means you are partly visible and likely appear for some prompts but lose others to competitors. Below 50 means AI engines have too little signal to name you at all.
How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Retrieval-based surfaces move fast: Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT search can cite a well-structured page within weeks of it being published and indexed. Baked-in training data moves slower, often 6 to 12 months, because it depends on accumulating third-party mentions before the next model update. Most businesses see the first wins from answer-first content and schema within 1 to 3 months.
Do Google rankings affect AI visibility?
Less than they used to. Brandlight research found the overlap between top Google results and AI-cited sources fell from about 70% to under 20%, so a page one ranking no longer guarantees AI engines cite you. Rankings still help, since retrieval often starts from search indexes, but answer-first structure, schema and third-party mentions now matter as much as position.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
No. There is currently no ad placement that buys you a spot inside ChatGPT recommendations or AI Overview citations. AI visibility is earned: clear answer-first content, schema that defines your entity, reviews, and mentions in the directories and listicles LLMs learn from. That is good news for small brands, because the playing field is content quality rather than ad budget.
