Click depth is simply how many links a visitor, or a crawler, has to follow from your homepage to reach a given page. This calculator does two things at once: it estimates the shallowest depth your site's architecture could realistically achieve given its size, and it tells you whether a specific page's actual depth is holding it back.

What click depth is and why it's counted from the homepage

Click depth counts the shortest path of internal links from your homepage to a given page, not the URL's folder structure. A product page living at yoursite.com/shop/category/product can still be one click from the homepage if there is a direct link to it in your main navigation or on a featured section, regardless of how deep the URL looks.

How the optimal depth figure is calculated

If every page on your site links out to roughly the same number of other pages, the maximum number of pages reachable at a given depth grows exponentially with that link count, similar to how a tree with more branches per level reaches more leaves faster. The formula used here is the ceiling of the logarithm of your total page count divided by the logarithm of your average links per page. It answers the question: if this site were structured as efficiently as possible, what's the shallowest depth needed to reach every page at least once.

In practice no real site is perfectly evenly linked, so treat this number as a target to aim for rather than a guarantee. Pages that get extra internal links, like cornerstone content or top sellers, will sit shallower than the average; pages that get few will sit deeper.

What to do about a page that sits too deep

The most direct fix is adding internal links to the deep page from pages that already sit closer to the homepage: category pages, related-content sections, or a curated list elsewhere on the site. A second option is restructuring navigation so the page's own category or hub is reachable in fewer clicks. Screaming Frog and Google Search Console's crawl stats reports are both commonly used to find which pages sit deepest across a full site, since this calculator only checks one page at a time.

FAQ

Click Depth Calculator: questions, answered

What is click depth and why does it matter for SEO?
Click depth is the number of links a crawler or visitor has to follow from the homepage to reach a page. Pages that sit many clicks deep tend to get crawled less often and pass along less internal link authority, both of which can slow how quickly they get indexed and how well they rank.
What's a good click depth target?
There's no universal number, but keeping your most important pages within 3 clicks of the homepage is a common practical guideline. This calculator gives you a size-adjusted target based on your own page count and internal linking, rather than a fixed rule of thumb.
How is the optimal depth formula calculated?
It takes the logarithm of your total page count divided by the logarithm of your average internal links per page, then rounds up. This models the maximum number of pages reachable at each depth if links were spread evenly, which tells you the shallowest depth theoretically possible for a site of your size.
Does click depth affect ranking directly?
Google has not confirmed click depth as a direct ranking factor on its own. What it does affect is crawl frequency and how internal link authority flows through your site, both of which can influence indexing speed and, indirectly, ranking potential.
How do I reduce click depth for a specific deep page?
Add internal links to it from pages that already sit closer to the homepage, such as category pages, navigation menus, or related-content sections on higher-traffic pages. Restructuring your navigation so its category is reachable sooner also helps.
Does this calculator crawl my actual site?
No. It works entirely from the numbers you type in, page count, average links per page, and the depth you're checking. It doesn't fetch any URLs, so there's nothing to wait for and nothing leaves your browser.
