The best Proofpoint alternatives in 2026
#1Mimecast

Mimecast is the default Proofpoint replacement because the evaluation is symmetrical: same gateway class, same enterprise claims, plus the continuity story Proofpoint does not lead with. When the mail platform itself fails, Mimecast's continuity keeps a business emailing, and regulated organisations treat that as insurance worth a line item.
Compare quotes on identical scope. Both vendors price by mailbox, modules and term, and both discounts move. The honest difference is emphasis: Proofpoint's detection reputation rests on targeted attacks against people; Mimecast's rests on the platform around the mail, archive, continuity, compliance. Decide which risk your last incident actually was.
What we like- The established head to head rival, protecting more organisations than any other independent here by its own account, continuity is its signature: email keeps flowing during a Microsoft 365 or mail server outage, under a 99.99 percent SLA in comparisons, archiving and compliance bundled with security in the full tiers, gateway or API deployment, so it can replace or layer
Watch out for- No published prices: third party guides estimate security only at $3 to $4 per user per month and full bundles at $7 to $10, BEC detection rated a step behind Proofpoint in 2026 gateway comparisons, the bundle breadth means small teams fund archive and continuity they may never invoke
#2Abnormal AI
Best for: Behavioural BEC and takeover defence4.7/5 on

Abnormal is the specialist's answer to the exact attack Proofpoint markets against. Business email compromise carries no malware and no bad link, just a plausible message from a familiar pattern; behavioural baselining is built to notice the one wrong note. Security teams layer it over Defender or Google and measure it purely on catches the first line missed.
Price the layer as a layer. Abnormal rarely replaces a line item; it adds one, and its contract values reflect enterprise risk rather than per mailbox arithmetic. It earns renewal in organisations where a single vendor payment fraud exceeds the annual contract, which, given average BEC losses, is a larger set of organisations than most boards enjoy admitting.
What we like- Behavioural AI that baselines normal communication and flags the anomalies BEC and vendor fraud consist of, API deployment in minutes with no MX record change, layering over Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, account takeover detection and automated remediation included in its model, named a Leader in Gartner's email security reports alongside the gateway incumbents
Watch out for- Quoted, modular pricing with no public per user rate
- One analyst directory lists a starting contract near $87,000 a year, it is an added layer, so its cost stacks on top of the platform protection you still keep, email centred: the wider collaboration and data surface belongs to broader platforms
#3Microsoft Defender for Office 365

Defender is the question every Proofpoint quote must now answer: what do you catch that the bundled platform does not. For many Microsoft 365 organisations the honest answer, after Plan 2 is properly configured, is less than the invoice suggests, which is why the standard advice in 2026 buyer guides is to configure Defender fully first and add layers only against named gaps.
Its economics are unbeatable in suite. A company on E5 already owns Plan 2; a company on E3 adds it for dollars per user. Reserve Proofpoint class spending for the risks Defender demonstrably misses in your environment, and make any challenger prove the miss with your own mail flow during the trial.
What we like- Published prices in a category that hides them: Plan 1 at $2 per user per month, Plan 2 at $5, with Plan 2 included in Microsoft 365 E5, native Safe Links, Safe Attachments, anti phishing and impersonation policies with no gateway to manage, Plan 2 adds Threat Explorer, automated investigation and response, and attack simulation training, moved to Leader status in Gartner's 2025 email security Magic Quadrant
Watch out for- The protection is only as good as its configuration, and default settings leave gaps third parties exploit in their demos, Microsoft 365 only: a Google shop gets nothing here, advanced tuning needs security staff who know the console, which smaller teams lack

Harmony Email is the API model with an enterprise pedigree. Avanan pioneered connecting to cloud email by API and scanning after the platform's own filters, including internal mail, which gateways never see. Check Point's ownership adds intelligence scale and a security brand procurement already knows.
Choose it when the API architecture wins the argument but Abnormal's narrower focus feels thin, or when collaboration coverage beyond the inbox, Teams messages, shared drives, is part of the requirement. Quote it against Abnormal on the same mailboxes and let catch rates on your own historical incidents referee.
What we like- Built on Avanan, the API email security pioneer Check Point acquired, now sold as Harmony Email and Collaboration, named a Leader in the 2025 Gartner email security report by the company's announcement, covers collaboration apps beyond email, including Teams, Slack and file sharing, backed by Check Point's threat intelligence across its whole estate
Watch out for- Quoted pricing, in line with the category's habits, API architecture inherits the platform beneath it, so it complements rather than replaces native controls, the Check Point portfolio is vast, and Harmony is one product among many in its sales conversations
#5Barracuda Email Protection
Best for: Mid market integrated protection4.5/5 on

Barracuda is where the mid market lands. A 300 person company does not need Proofpoint's threat research empire; it needs strong filtering, impersonation defence, a backup of the mailbox estate and an admin console one IT generalist can run. Barracuda's 2026 integrated layer aims exactly at that buyer on both major mail platforms.
Its honest ceiling is the sophisticated end. A finance team moving eight figure payments should evaluate Abnormal or Proofpoint class BEC depth as well, and decide with incident scenarios, not brochures. For the broad middle of business risk, Barracuda's completeness per administrator hour is the argument.
What we like- The mid market name in email security, sized and priced for companies without a security department of fifty, launched an AI driven Integrated Email Protection layer for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace in June 2026, bundles the surrounding needs smaller teams actually have: backup, archiving, and incident response options, deployment and management designed for a generalist IT team
Watch out for- Quoted and tiered pricing still requires the sales conversation, detection depth at the targeted attack end trails the Proofpoint and Abnormal specialisation, the portfolio breadth can confuse a first quote, with backup and security lines intertwined

Google Workspace plays Defender's role for Gmail organisations: a powerful included defence that should be fully configured before any third party invoice is signed. Gmail's spam and phishing filtering benefits from a signal scale no independent vendor matches, and its admin security centre has grown into real tooling on the higher tiers.
Its presence on this list is a discipline. A Google shop evaluating Proofpoint should first extract everything its Workspace tier already includes, then ask the challenger to demonstrate catches on the remainder. Layers like Abnormal and Harmony connect to Google as readily as to Microsoft, so the layering decision survives whichever platform hosts the mail.
What we like- Gmail's native filtering is among the strongest commodity defences in existence, included in Workspace plans from $7 per user per month, no gateway, no MX change, no second console for the baseline layer, higher Workspace tiers add security investigation tools, data controls and context aware access, the same configure first logic as Defender applies: the platform is already paid for
Watch out for- A baseline, not a specialist: targeted BEC depth is where third party layers earn their place, the full security tooling sits in Enterprise tiers, above the $7 entry, Google shops are a minority of the enterprise email market, so peer experience is thinner
#7Cofense
Best for: Phishing defence and the human layer4.4/5 on
G2 (5 reviews, checked Oct 2026)
Visit cofense.com

Free planNo
Cofense covers the layer technology arguments skip: the person reading the message. Its model collects employee reports through a one click button, triages them against live campaigns, and feeds confirmed phish back into response. Organisations with strong reporting cultures catch in minutes what filters missed entirely.
Buy it as the second half of a programme. Proofpoint and its rivals here stop most attacks at the boundary; Cofense organises the response to the few that arrive, and trains the population the attackers target. It replaces nothing on this list, which is precisely why it completes it.
What we like- Built around the human sensor network: employee reported phishing, triaged by its intelligence operation, turns your workforce into a detection source rather than only a target, phishing specific intelligence gathered from real reported campaigns across its customer base, managed services options for teams without a security operations bench
Watch out for- A complement, not a gateway or platform replacement: mail still needs its primary defence beneath, quoted enterprise pricing, value depends on employee reporting culture, which the programme itself must build
How we chose
We structured alternatives by deployment architecture, gateway, API layer, native platform and human layer, because that choice now matters more than feature lists in email security. Proofpoint itself is never an entry, by the rules of an alternatives list. Almost nobody publishes pricing: Defender's $2 and $5 tiers are the exception, and every other figure is labelled as a third party estimate or left as See website. We did not claim hands-on testing, and detection comparisons are credited to the 2026 buyer guides that published them.
Architecture first, then detection, then price
The gateway versus API argument decides more than any catch rate. A gateway sees mail before delivery and can block at the door, at the cost of MX changes and mail flow dependency. An API layer sees everything including internal mail, deploys in minutes and remediates after delivery, at the cost of a short exposure window. Neither is universally right; your regulator, your mail platform and your incident history each hold a vote.
Test detection on your own evidence. Hand every finalist the last year of phishing and BEC incidents your current stack caught late or missed, sanitised as needed, and score what their trial finds in your live flow. Vendor benchmarks use vendor chosen corpora. Your archive is the only test set that predicts your next incident.
And fund the process beside the platform. A verified callback procedure for payment changes stops more BEC loss than any filter upgrade, because it works when the message is perfect. The strongest email security programme in 2026 is a good platform, a configured native baseline, and a finance team that telephones before it pays.
Frequently asked questions
Why do companies evaluate Proofpoint alternatives?
Usually price opacity, architecture and bundling. Proofpoint quotes everything, Microsoft and Google now bundle credible native protection into suites already owned, and API native rivals promise BEC depth without a gateway migration.
How much does Proofpoint cost?
Proofpoint does not publish list prices. Third party guides cite its Essentials Business tier around $3.03 per user per month, with enterprise contracts quoted per mailbox, modules and term. Treat every public figure as a negotiation starting point.
Is Microsoft Defender enough on its own?
For many Microsoft 365 organisations, properly configured Plan 2 is a strong baseline: it reached Leader status in Gartner's 2025 email security report. High risk teams add a behavioural layer such as Abnormal for BEC and account takeover depth and prove the need against their own incidents.
What is the difference between a gateway and an API layer?
A gateway sits in the mail flow and can block before delivery, requiring MX record changes. An API layer connects to the mail platform, scans inbound, outbound and internal mail, and removes threats after delivery. Many enterprises now run a native platform plus an API layer.
Which alternative suits a 200 person company?
Barracuda for an integrated, generalist friendly stack, or Defender Plan 2 configured properly if you are on Microsoft 365, with Abnormal evaluated only if payment fraud risk justifies a dedicated layer.
