Best Sales Tax Compliance Software in 2026: 10 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • Small e-commerce sellers get the fastest start with TaxJar ($39/month) or TaxCloud ($19/month); TaxCloud's SST certification makes filing free in 24 states.
  • Stripe-native businesses can switch on Stripe Tax (0.5% per transaction) with near-zero setup, but it is calculation-only unless you add the Complete tier.
  • Sellers with tiny filing footprints pay the least with Numeral ($75 per filing, no subscription) or Kintsugi (free monitoring, $75 per filing).
  • Avalara, Vertex and Sovos publish no prices: expect quote-based annual contracts and implementation projects, not self-serve sign-up.

The best sales tax compliance software

A Shopify seller crosses $100,000 in sales to California, and a nexus notice arrives a few months later. Then Texas. Then New York. Every state has its own thresholds, its own rates, its own filing calendar, and its own penalties for getting it wrong. These ten sales tax compliance tools cover the whole market, from free monitoring for startups to the enterprise platforms that run inside SAP.

#1

TaxJar

Best for: Small e-commerce sellers on Stripe or Shopify
Visit taxjar.com
Starting price$39/month (Starter, up to 200 orders/month)
Free planNo (free trial: 30 days)
TaxJar homepage

TaxJar, now part of Stripe, is the quickest path from signup to filing correctly for a small e-commerce seller. Connect your store and the reporting, nexus tracking and filings start working within the hour. The integrations with Stripe, Shopify, WooCommerce and Amazon are native, not connector projects.

Watch the 2026 pricing. Starter doubled from $19 to $39 a month, and the AutoFile fees of $50 per return on Starter ($55 on Professional) mean a 10-state quarterly filer pays well over $2,000 a year once filing fees are added. Model the total, not the subscription, and note there is no SST participation to offset filing costs. For sellers in a handful of states, it remains the simplest compliant option.

What we like
  • Fastest setup in the category for small sellers
  • Real-time sales tax API on Professional
  • Deep native integrations with Stripe, Shopify, WooCommerce and Amazon
Watch out for
  • Starter excludes API access and real-time checkout calculation
  • AutoFile fees ($50-$55 per return) compound fast for multi-state filers
#2

TaxCloud

Best for: Growing US sellers wanting predictable costs
Visit taxcloud.com
Starting price$19/month (Starter); Premium from $79/month
Free planNo (free trial: 30 days, no credit card)
TaxCloud homepage

TaxCloud's case rests on two words: SST certified. As a Streamlined Sales Tax Certified Service Provider, it files for free in all 24 SST member states, which no non-CSP competitor can match, and its own filing fees start at $39 per return and drop to $20 with volume. Pricing is published and transparent: $19 a month Starter, $79 Premium, with a 30-day trial.

The limits are at the top end. There is no checkout calculation on Shopify or Stripe (you use their built-in tax tools), and there are no deep ERP integrations for global enterprises. The biggest revenue states (California, New York, Texas, Florida) are not SST members, so sellers concentrated there see less of the free-filing benefit. For growing US e-commerce brands selling across many states, the cost predictability is the point.

What we like
  • SST Certified Service Provider, so filing is free in all 24 SST member states
  • Fully transparent published pricing
  • US-based human support with an audit defense add-on
Watch out for
  • No checkout tax calculation on Shopify or Stripe (it relies on their native tax tools)
  • No deep SAP or Dynamics ERP integrations
#3

Stripe Tax

Best for: Stripe-native SaaS and e-commerce businesses
Visit stripe.com
Starting price0.5% per transaction (Basic); Tax Complete from $90/month
Free planNo (Basic has no monthly fee; purely usage-based)
Stripe Tax homepage

If you process on Stripe, Stripe Tax is a switch flip. Basic adds correct tax calculation at checkout across US states and VAT countries for 0.5% per transaction, with no monthly fee and no new integration. For a SaaS company that just needs rates right at checkout, the setup effort is near zero.

The rest of compliance is not included. Basic does not file returns: you file yourself or step up to Tax Complete (from $90 a month on an annual contract), which adds registrations and a set number of filings per year. Stripe Tax is not a merchant of record, so the liability stays with you, and at high volumes 0.5% of GMV costs more than flat-fee tools. Use it for calculation; buy filings separately or upgrade deliberately.

What we like
  • Zero extra setup if you already process on Stripe
  • Calculation, collection and reporting in one place
  • Transparent published pricing with no contracts on Basic
Watch out for
  • Basic is calculation-only and does not file returns
  • You remain the seller of record with full liability
  • 0.5% of GMV gets expensive at scale
#4

Kintsugi

Best for: Startups wanting free exposure monitoring
Visit trykintsugi.com
Starting price$0 (Free plan); Starter from $75 per filing or registration
Free planYes (free nexus monitoring, AI product categorization, no credit card)
Kintsugi homepage

Kintsugi lets you watch your nexus exposure for free and pay only when something actually needs filing: $75 per filing or registration on Starter, with no subscription and no long-term contract. The AI product categorization handles the tedious taxability mapping, and 60-plus integrations cover the common stacks. Premium adds the Kintsugi Guarantee, where they cover penalties and interest for their errors.

The automation has sharp edges. Customers have reported registrations made in states where they were not clearly needed, so review what it files rather than letting it run unattended. Per-filing pricing also punishes monthly filers at scale. For startups that want to know their exposure without committing to a subscription, the free tier is the right starting point.

What we like
  • Free exposure monitoring across the US and 100-plus countries with no transaction fees
  • AI-powered product classification
  • 60-plus integrations
Watch out for
  • Automation-first with less human oversight
  • Customer reports of auto-registration in states where it was not needed
  • Not an SST Certified Service Provider
#5

Numeral

Best for: SMBs and sellers with small filing footprints
Visit numeral.com
Starting price$75 per filing and $150 per registration (pay as you go, no subscription)
Free planYes (free nexus monitoring and tax analysis, no long-term contract)
Numeral homepage

Numeral is the cheapest way to stay compliant if you file in a few states on a quarterly or annual schedule. There is no subscription: $75 per filing, $150 per registration, free nexus monitoring to watch your exposure. The Numeral Guarantee covers penalties and interest if they file late, and support runs 24/7 live chat.

Do the state-count math before committing. A 10-state monthly filer pays roughly $9,000 a year before registrations, which is more than a TaxCloud subscription. Numeral suits sellers with small footprints or infrequent filing calendars, not growing multi-state operations. Setup is quick, connecting directly to sales channels, and there is no contract to escape if you outgrow it.

What we like
  • No monthly fees: you pay only when work is done
  • The Numeral Guarantee covers penalties and interest on late filings
  • 24/7 live chat support
Watch out for
  • Costs scale linearly with state count ($75 per filing punishes monthly filers)
  • Not an SST Certified Service Provider
  • API access needs a custom-quoted Pro plan
#6

Anrok

Best for: Growth-stage SaaS companies selling subscriptions
Visit anrok.com
Starting priceSee website (per-market monthly pricing; third-party figures unverified)
Free planNo (trial availability unverified on vendor page)
Anrok homepage

Anrok is the sales tax tool built for software companies rather than adapted to them. Digital-product taxability classification is its core strength: it knows how SaaS is taxed across jurisdictions in a way generic tools approximate. Native integrations with Stripe Billing and Chargebee mean no manual product mapping, and the exposure modeling shows your liability before a notice does.

The focus is also the limit. Physical-goods sellers and manufacturers should look elsewhere, and Anrok does not file returns for you. Pricing is consumption-based per market per month and scales with revenue and jurisdictions, so the percentage-of-revenue model can erode margins as you scale. For SaaS companies selling subscriptions across many states and countries, the specialization is worth the premium.

What we like
  • Purpose-built for SaaS with best-in-class digital-product taxability classification
  • Native Stripe Billing and Chargebee integrations
  • Modern interface with exposure modeling
Watch out for
  • Poor fit for physical-goods e-commerce or manufacturing
  • No managed filing (customers file their own returns)
  • Pricing scales with your revenue
#7

Avalara AvaTax

Best for: Mid-market to enterprise companies with complex ERPs
Visit avalara.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based annual contracts)
Free planNo (demo and sales consultation only)
Avalara AvaTax homepage

Avalara is the default enterprise answer for a reason: if you run SAP or Oracle, no other vendor matches its prebuilt integration depth. AvaTax handles the gnarliest product taxability scenarios, and as an SST Certified Service Provider it offers free filing in 24 states for qualifying sellers. The connector library (700-plus) means your ERP, e-commerce and POS systems can all feed one tax engine.

The price of that depth is opacity and compounding cost. Calculation, returns, exemption certificate management and managed filing are separate modules, each billed, on quote-based annual contracts with commonly reported renewal increases. Third-party analyses put mid-market deployments in the low five figures a year and enterprise stacks far higher (unverified estimates). Simple e-commerce connectors can be self-serve, but ERP implementations are real projects. Get every module quoted before you sign.

What we like
  • 700-plus prebuilt connectors, the deepest ERP integration library (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics)
  • Handles the most complex product taxability scenarios
  • SST Certified Service Provider with free filing in 24 states for qualifying sellers
Watch out for
  • Opaque quote-based pricing with modules sold separately, so costs compound
  • Implementation often needs a partner and real onboarding investment
#8

Vertex

Best for: Large enterprises running SAP, Oracle or complex ERPs
Visit vertexinc.com
Starting priceSee website (quote-based enterprise; no published pricing)
Free planNo (demo only)
Vertex homepage

Vertex is the tax engine inside the world's largest ERPs. Its SAP integration is the industry benchmark, the modular platform covers US sales tax and VAT across 59 countries, and the built-in tax research content keeps determinations defensible. For a global enterprise on S/4HANA, there is no deeper option.

There is also no smaller option. Pricing is quote-based with third-party estimates starting around $30,000 a year and climbing fast (unverified), implementation runs 3 to 9 months with certified partners, and you need internal tax staff or a partner to operate it. This is not a tool you evaluate on a trial; it is a program you budget as a capital project. Everyone else on this list is cheaper and faster.

What we like
  • Gold-standard SAP integration and the industry benchmark for enterprise tax calculation
  • Modular platform covering US sales tax and VAT in 59 countries
  • Deep tax research content built in
Watch out for
  • Enterprise-only pricing and implementation (typically 3-9 months with certified partners)
  • No meaningful SMB entry point
#9

Sovos

Best for: Large enterprises needing US sales tax plus global VAT and e-invoicing
Visit sovos.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote; no published pricing)
Free planNo (demo only)
Sovos homepage

Sovos is the one-vendor answer for companies that need US sales tax, global VAT returns and e-invoicing mandates handled together. Few vendors cover all three, and Sovos does it across 70-plus countries with a regulatory update engine that tracks mandate changes. The managed-filing services take returns off your team's plate entirely.

Like Vertex, it is enterprise-only in practice: custom annual quotes, no self-serve entry, and implementations that lean on professional services. SMBs will find no door in. For a multinational finance team consolidating indirect tax under one contract, the breadth justifies the sales cycle. For everyone else, the mid-market tools above do the job at a fraction of the cost and effort.

What we like
  • SST Certified Service Provider plus global VAT and e-invoicing coverage in 70-plus countries under one contract
  • Strong managed-filing services
  • Deep regulatory update engine
Watch out for
  • Enterprise pricing and sales cycle with no self-serve option
  • Breadth can mean a long, services-heavy implementation
#10

Zamp

Best for: Finance teams that want sales tax fully off their plate
Visit zamp.com
Starting priceSee website (custom-scoped managed-service pricing)
Free planNo (free nexus assessment and expert consultation tier)
Zamp homepage

Zamp is not software you operate; it is a service that operates for you. Registrations, filings, notice management and audit support are executed by their team, with shared liability in writing: they cover penalties and interest on their errors. The vendor reports handling 75,000-plus notices, and onboarding averages under two hours with native Stripe integration including historical backfill.

The price of the white glove is opacity. Pricing is scoped to your footprint with no published rates, so the sales conversation is the price discovery, and the all-in number reflects a service, not a subscription. For startups through $300M-plus companies with multi-channel sales across Stripe, Amazon, Shopify and Chargebee, getting sales tax entirely off the finance team's plate is worth pricing. For a two-state seller, it is overkill.

What we like
  • True managed service: registrations, filings, notice management and audit support executed for you
  • Shared liability in writing, covering penalties and interest on their errors
  • Native Stripe integration with historical backfill
Watch out for
  • Quote-only pricing means no budget visibility without a sales process
  • Overkill and overpriced for simple one- or two-state footprints

SST: the free filing program most sellers ignore

The Streamlined Sales Tax program is the closest thing US sales tax has to a cheat code, and most sellers have never heard of it. In the 24 SST member states, a Certified Service Provider files your returns for free. TaxCloud and Avalara are both CSPs, which means a seller with nexus in, say, 15 SST states pays $0 in filing fees there instead of $50-plus per return per state.

The catch is geography. The biggest revenue states, California, New York, Texas and Florida, are not SST members, so sellers concentrated in those states get less of the benefit. And CSP free filing comes with conditions: you must use the CSP's system for calculation in those states. Before comparing per-return filing fees across vendors, list your nexus states and mark the SST members. If most of your footprint is SST, a CSP like TaxCloud can cut your compliance bill in half. If your sales cluster in the big non-member states, optimize for low per-return fees instead.

The real cost is the filing fees, not the subscription

Every sales tax vendor advertises the subscription and buries the filing fees, which is where the real money goes. TaxJar's $39-a-month Starter looks cheap until you add $50 per return: a 10-state quarterly filer pays about $2,000 a year in filing fees on top of $468 in subscription. TaxCloud's filing fees start at $39 per return and drop to $20 with volume. Numeral and Kintsugi skip subscriptions entirely at $75 per filing, which wins for small footprints and loses for large ones.

Model your total before you commit. Count your nexus states, note your filing frequency in each (monthly, quarterly, annual), and multiply by the vendor's per-return fee. Then check the SST question above: every SST-state return filed free through a CSP is $40 to $55 you do not pay. A $19-a-month plan with expensive filing fees routinely costs more than a $79-a-month plan with cheap ones. The subscription is the headline; the filing fees are the bill.

How we chose

We started with the searches finance teams and sellers actually run: sales tax software, sales tax compliance software, sales tax automation and nexus tracking. For each candidate we opened the vendor's own pricing page, checked plan names and prices against public reviews on G2 and Capterra and practitioner discussion on Reddit, and compared feature lists, filing coverage, SST certification and company-size fit. Where a price could not be verified on the vendor's page we wrote "See website" instead of guessing. The shortlist mixes self-serve tools a small seller can buy today with managed services and enterprise platforms, because a Shopify store and a multinational are not solving the same problem.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need sales tax software, or can my accountant handle it?

An accountant can file returns, but they cannot calculate tax at checkout in real time or track nexus across 45 states automatically. Once you sell into more than two or three states, software pays for itself: it monitors thresholds, calculates rates per transaction, and prepares or files the returns. Most sellers keep the accountant for strategy and let the software handle the monthly mechanics.

What is sales tax nexus, and how do I know if I have it?

Nexus is the connection to a state that obligates you to collect and remit its sales tax. Every state sets its own economic thresholds (commonly $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions), plus physical presence rules for offices, warehouses and employees. The tools on this list monitor your sales against each state's thresholds and alert you before you cross them, which is the difference between registering calmly and getting a notice.

What does SST certification mean?

A Streamlined Sales Tax Certified Service Provider is audited and approved to calculate tax and file returns in the 24 SST member states, and the filing service is free to sellers who use the CSP's system. TaxCloud and Avalara are both CSPs. If most of your nexus states are SST members, a CSP can eliminate most of your filing fees.

How much should sales tax compliance cost per year?

For a seller in 5 states filing quarterly: roughly $500 to $1,500 a year on TaxCloud or TaxJar including filing fees, or under $1,500 on Numeral's pay-per-filing model. At 15-plus states with monthly filing, expect $5,000 to $15,000 a year on mid-market tools, and $20,000-plus on Avalara or Vertex with implementation on top. The filing fees, not the subscription, drive the total.

Can sales tax software handle international VAT too?

Some can. Sovos and Vertex cover VAT and e-invoicing across dozens of countries alongside US sales tax. Stripe Tax calculates VAT at checkout but leaves the filings to you or the Complete tier. Anrok handles international digital-product taxability for SaaS. Pure US e-commerce tools like TaxJar and TaxCloud are US-only; do not buy them for a VAT problem.

What happens if I ignore sales tax compliance?

States find you through marketplace facilitator reports, payment processor data and nexus questionnaires. Penalties and interest compound from the date tax was due, and several states hold owners personally liable. Voluntary disclosure programs in most states limit the lookback period if you come forward before you are contacted, which is why the monitoring tools on this list exist: they tell you before the state does.
