How we chose
We compared catalog breadth, breeder focus, guarantees, shipping, support and educational resources from vendor pages and independent comparisons checked in 2026, and we weighed beginner friendliness, US service, genetics quality and price transparency. We listed prices as See website because seed prices vary by strain, pack size and promotion, and quoting one price would mislead. No company was credited with hands-on testing, and no germination rates, yields or medical effects were invented for this guide.
What to check before you pick
First, check the law where you live before ordering: cannabis laws vary by state and local area, change often, and some sellers ship seeds as souvenirs where germination is restricted. Confirm whether home cultivation is allowed, whether plant count limits apply, and whether your state treats seeds differently from plants, since those rules decide whether an order is lawful for you. Do not rely on a seed bank website for legal advice.
Second, match seed type to experience: feminized seeds reduce the risk of male plants, autoflowering seeds flower on age rather than light schedule and suit beginners, while regular seeds suit breeders who want male and female plants. Check germination guarantees carefully, since ILGM reships failed seeds while other banks offer partial guarantees, and confirm shipping time, discretion and payment options before paying. Finally, make no medical assumptions: this guide describes seed sellers, not treatments, and cannabis effects and risks vary by person, so talk to a clinician about any health question.
Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to buy marijuana seeds in the US?
It depends on your state and local laws, which vary widely and change often. Some sellers ship seeds as souvenirs where germination is restricted, and some states limit or ban home cultivation, so check your state and local rules before ordering or germinating.
What is the best seed bank for beginners?
ILGM, with beginner focused guides, US based support, free US shipping and a germination guarantee that reships failed seeds. Seedsman and NASC suit buyers who already know what they want and value variety or curated breeders.
What is the difference between feminized, autoflower and regular seeds?
Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants, autoflower seeds flower based on age rather than light schedule, and regular seeds produce male and female plants and suit breeders. Beginners usually start with feminized or autoflower seeds.
Do seed banks guarantee germination?
Some do: ILGM offers a germination guarantee with reshipment, while other banks offer partial guarantees or none, so read the guarantee terms before ordering. Guarantees usually require following the seller germination instructions.
How long does shipping take?
US based banks like ILGM deliver in about 5 to 10 business days in published reviews, while international banks take longer, though MSNL US shipping has improved to about 5 days in one comparison. Discreet packaging is standard at most banks here.
Should I buy from a US or international seed bank?
US banks offer faster shipping and domestic support, while international banks offer broader breeder variety. For a first order, a US bank like ILGM or NASC reduces shipping risk; for rare breeder genetics, an international marketplace like Seedsman or Royal Queen Seeds may be needed.
