Venmo is free for most everyday use, but it charges real fees the moment you want your money faster, pay with a credit card or run a business through it. Standard transfers funded by your bank, debit card or Venmo balance cost nothing, and moving your balance to your bank on the normal 1 to 3 business day schedule is free too. The calculator above covers the situations where Venmo actually takes a cut, using the rates published in Venmo's own Help Center.
Instant transfer moves money from your Venmo balance to your linked bank account or debit card within minutes instead of a few business days, and Venmo charges 1.75% of the amount for that speed, with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum fee of $25. That floor matters on small transfers: a $10 instant transfer is charged the $0.25 minimum rather than the 17.5 cents that 1.75% would otherwise work out to, so tiny instant transfers carry a much higher effective rate than larger ones.
The $25 cap works the other way for large amounts. Once a transfer passes roughly $1,430, the 1.75% fee would exceed $25, so Venmo caps it there instead. Between those two limits, the fee scales directly with the amount you move.
A Venmo Business Profile, the option merchants use to accept payments from customers, pays a seller transaction fee of 1.9% plus $0.10 on every payment received through the standard Venmo flow. Accept the same payment through Tap to Pay on a phone instead, and the rate rises slightly to 2.29% plus $0.10. Both fees are deducted automatically before the money reaches the business balance, so the amount a customer sends is not the amount you end up with.
Unlike personal transfers, there is no way to avoid this fee on a Business Profile. It applies to every payment received, regardless of volume or how long the account has been active, so it is worth building the 1.9% into your pricing rather than treating it as a surprise at reconciliation time.
For personal use, the fix is simple: choose the standard bank transfer instead of instant transfer whenever you are not in a hurry, and fund payments with your bank account, debit card or Venmo balance instead of a credit card, since credit card funding adds a 3% fee on top of whatever you are sending. For a Business Profile, the transaction fee is a fixed cost of doing business through Venmo, so the more useful move is to focus on winning more paying customers rather than trying to negotiate the rate down, since Venmo does not offer volume discounts on this fee.
