The URL slug is the part of an address that describes the specific page, and it is one of the few pieces of on-page SEO a visitor sees before they even click. This checker pulls the last path segment out of a URL, or reads a slug typed in directly, and scores it against the practices Google and most SEO practitioners recommend: short, lowercase, hyphenated, descriptive and free of filler words.

What this checker looks at

It flags a slug that runs long, uses uppercase letters or underscores instead of hyphens, contains raw spaces or unencoded special characters, starts or ends with a stray hyphen, is only a number with no descriptive text, or is either too short to be meaningful or long enough to look keyword-stuffed. It also counts common filler stop words like "the," "of," and "and," since trimming most of these usually makes a slug both shorter and easier to read.

Why slug quality is worth fixing

A clean, descriptive slug helps in three separate ways: it is a small on-page relevance signal search engines can read directly, it gives a searcher scanning a results page a preview of what the page covers before they click, and it makes the URL easier to remember, share and paste without breaking. None of these effects is large on its own, but together they make a URL worth getting right the first time, since changing a live slug later means setting up a redirect.

Fixing a slug this tool flags

Rewrite the slug in lowercase, join words with single hyphens, drop most filler stop words, and keep the core keyword phrase near the front. If the page is already live and indexed, do not just change the slug: set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one so links and rankings carry over instead of resetting.

FAQ

URL Slug SEO Checker: questions, answered

What makes a URL slug good for SEO?
A good slug is short, lowercase, uses hyphens to separate words, contains the page's main topic in plain language, and avoids filler stop words, underscores, special characters and unnecessary numbers or IDs.
How long should a slug be?
There is no hard limit, but keeping the full URL under roughly 60 characters for the path is a common practical target. Longer slugs are not automatically penalized, but they get truncated in search results and are harder for people to read and remember.
Why does the checker flag stop words like the and of?
Stop words like the, a and of add length without adding meaning to a URL. Most SEO guidance recommends trimming most of them out of a slug, for example using best-running-shoes-beginners instead of the-best-running-shoes-for-beginners, while keeping the slug still readable.
Should I change the slug on a page that is already ranking?
Be cautious. Changing a live, indexed URL means the old address stops working unless you add a 301 redirect to the new one. If a small slug improvement is not worth the temporary risk and redirect setup, it is often safer to leave a decent, already-ranking slug alone.
Are underscores really worse than hyphens in a URL?
Yes, according to Google's own documentation. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, so best-running-shoes is read as three words, but an underscore is not treated the same way, so best_running_shoes can be read as one run-together token instead of three separate words.
Does this tool check the whole URL or just the last segment?
It analyzes the final path segment, which is the specific page slug, since that is the part you typically control when naming a new page. Paste either a full URL or just the slug text directly; the tool extracts the right piece either way.
