This tool compares two pieces of text and gives you two independent similarity scores instantly, entirely in your browser. It is built for the everyday case of checking whether a rewritten paragraph, a new product description, or a blog draft is too close to something already published, whether that is your own earlier content or a competitor's.

How the similarity score is calculated

Character similarity is based on Levenshtein distance, a well established algorithm that counts the minimum number of single-character edits, insertions, deletions or substitutions, needed to turn one string into the other. That edit count is converted into a percentage relative to the length of the longer text. Word overlap uses Jaccard similarity instead: each text is split into unique lowercase words, and the score is the size of the shared vocabulary divided by the size of the combined vocabulary. The two scores answer different questions, one cares about exact wording and order, the other only cares about which words appear at all.

What counts as duplicate content

Search engines do not publish a fixed similarity percentage that defines duplicate content, and their internal comparison methods are far more advanced than a straightforward character or word diff. What tends to matter in practice is whether two of your own pages are competing for the same search intent while saying largely the same thing, which risks splitting ranking signals between them instead of consolidating them onto one strong page. Use this tool as a fast first check, not as a substitute for a full content audit.

Where your text goes

Nowhere. Both comparisons run as JavaScript directly in your browser tab. Nothing you paste is sent to a server, logged, or stored anywhere, which means it is safe to paste unpublished drafts, client copy under NDA, or anything else you would not want leaving your machine.

FAQ

Text Similarity Checker: questions, answered

How is text similarity calculated here?
Two scores are shown. Character similarity uses Levenshtein edit distance, the minimum number of single-character insertions, deletions or substitutions needed to turn one text into the other, converted to a percentage. Word overlap uses Jaccard similarity on the set of unique lowercase words in each text, the size of the overlap divided by the size of the combined vocabulary.
What counts as duplicate content for SEO purposes?
Google has never published an exact percentage threshold, and none of the major search engines use simple string-diff similarity the way this tool does. What matters in practice is whether two of your own pages are trying to rank for the same intent with largely the same content, which tends to split rather than combine their ranking signals. A high score here is a useful early warning, not a verdict.
Is this the same method Google uses to detect duplicate content?
No. Google's systems use far more sophisticated, largely unpublished methods that look at meaning and structure, not just character or word overlap. This tool gives you a fast, transparent, purely mechanical comparison you can run instantly in your browser, treat it as a first-pass signal rather than a definitive match to how Google evaluates duplication.
What's a normal similarity score for near-duplicate pages?
Two genuinely different pages covering the same broad topic often land in the 20 to 40 percent range on word overlap just from shared common terms. Scores above roughly 70 to 80 percent, especially on the character-level score, usually mean the two texts are largely the same content with only minor edits, worth a closer look before you publish both.
Does this tool store or send my text anywhere?
No. Both text boxes are compared entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded to a server, logged, or stored, which also means closing or refreshing the page clears everything.
What's the difference between the two scores?
Character similarity is sensitive to exact wording, punctuation and order, so it drops fast even when two paragraphs say the same thing in different words. Word overlap ignores order and only checks vocabulary, so it stays higher for paraphrased content that reuses the same key terms. Looking at both together tells you whether text was lightly edited or genuinely rewritten.
