How to calculate speech length

Divide your word count by your speaking pace in words per minute. A 1,300 word speech delivered at 130 words per minute takes 1,300 divided by 130, which is 10 minutes. Most people speak more slowly in front of an audience than they do in casual conversation, so a pace of around 110 to 150 words per minute is a common range for prepared speeches and presentations, though nerves, pauses for emphasis and audience reactions can all stretch it further.

Why speaking time and reading time are different

This calculator also shows how long the same script would take to read silently, using a faster pace of 225 words per minute, because silent reading and spoken delivery are not the same task. When you read silently you process words faster than you can physically say them out loud, so a script that reads quickly on the page can still run long once you are actually speaking it, especially with pauses, transitions and any audience interaction built in. If your only timing check has been reading the script to yourself, expect the real delivery to run noticeably longer.

Getting your timing right before you present

The only reliable way to confirm timing is to rehearse out loud at the pace you actually plan to speak, ideally more than once, since pace tends to change with practice and nerves on the day.
