A sitemap file count calculator tells you how many XML sitemap files a large site needs, based on the 50,000 URL and 50MB per-file limits set by the sitemaps.org protocol that Google and Bing both follow.
Every individual sitemap file is capped at 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed, whichever comes first. Once your site has more URLs than that, or your average URL entry is large enough to push the file past 50MB, you need to split your URLs across multiple sitemap files and list all of them inside one sitemap index file.
Enter your total URL count and this calculator checks both limits: it divides your URL count by 50,000 to see how many files the count alone requires, and multiplies your URL count by an average bytes-per-entry estimate to see how many files the size limit requires. Whichever number is higher is the number of sitemap files you actually need.
Splitting sitemaps by content type, such as separate files for products, categories and blog posts, rather than an arbitrary alphabetical or numeric split, lets you check each type's indexing status separately in Google Search Console. That makes it much easier to spot, for example, that your product pages are indexing well while your blog posts are not, instead of one large blended number that hides the problem.
