Shopify does not charge one flat rate. What you pay depends on your plan, whether the customer paid online or in person, and whether you use Shopify Payments or an outside gateway. This calculator applies the current published US rates for each combination and shows the exact fee and the amount you actually receive.

How Shopify calculates your transaction fees

Shopify Payments charges a percentage of the order plus a small fixed fee per transaction, and the percentage drops as you move up plans. On the Basic plan, online card payments cost 2.9% plus 30 cents. The Shopify plan drops that to 2.6% plus 30 cents, and Advanced drops it further to 2.4% plus 30 cents. In-person payments through a card reader carry a lower fixed fee, 10 cents instead of 30, because card-present transactions carry less fraud risk for the processor.

A $100 order on the Basic plan through Shopify Payments online costs 2.9% of $100, which is $2.90, plus the 30 cent fixed fee, for a total of $3.20. You would receive $96.80.

Shopify Payments versus an external gateway

If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, PayPal or a regional gateway for example, Shopify still charges a fee for processing the order through its platform, on top of whatever that gateway charges you directly. That extra fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on the Shopify plan, and 0.5% on Advanced. It exists because Shopify built and maintains the checkout, even when it is not the one moving the money.

This is the main reason most merchants stick with Shopify Payments once they are set up: skipping it does not remove a fee, it adds one on top of your gateway's own cost.

Which Shopify plan actually saves you money

The percentage savings from upgrading plans only pay for themselves once your monthly sales volume is high enough to offset the higher subscription price. A store doing $5,000 a month in online sales saves roughly $15 a month in card fees by moving from Basic to the Shopify plan, which is worth checking against the plan price difference before you upgrade.

FAQ

Shopify Fee Calculator: questions, answered

How much does Shopify charge in fees?
For online card payments through Shopify Payments, it is 2.9% plus 30 cents on the Basic plan, 2.6% plus 30 cents on the Shopify plan, and 2.4% plus 30 cents on Advanced. In-person payments through a card reader use the same percentages with a lower 10 cent fixed fee. These are the standard published US rates and can vary by country or a negotiated plan, so confirm your exact rate in your Shopify admin.
What is the extra Shopify transaction fee for external gateways?
If you accept payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of whatever that gateway charges you: 2% on Basic, 1% on the Shopify plan, and 0.5% on Advanced. It is charged because Shopify still processes the order through its checkout even when another company handles the money.
Does upgrading my Shopify plan lower my fees?
Yes. Each plan tier up lowers both the card processing percentage and the external gateway transaction fee. Whether it is worth it depends on your sales volume: the fee savings need to outweigh the difference in the monthly subscription price, which this calculator can help you check by comparing plans at your typical order size.
Are Shopify Payments rates different for in-person sales?
Yes. In-person transactions through a Shopify card reader use a lower fixed fee, 10 cents instead of 30 cents, because a physical card swipe or tap carries less fraud risk than an online transaction. The percentage rate by plan stays close to the online rate.
Do these rates include the Shopify subscription fee?
No. This calculator covers only the per-transaction processing fee. Your monthly Shopify plan subscription is a separate, fixed cost charged regardless of how many orders you process, and it is not included in the fee or payout figures shown here.
