Cost per pickup spreads your full release cost, writing and distribution, across the media coverage it actually generates, not just the release count.

A press release distribution cost calculator turns your annual PR spend into a cost-per-placement number you can actually evaluate. Enter how many releases you send per year, what a distribution service charges per release, any writing cost, and how many media pickups you typically get from a single release, and the tool works out your true cost per piece of coverage.

Release count is not the full cost picture

Press release budgets often get evaluated by release count and distribution fee alone, ignoring both the writing cost and, more importantly, whether the releases actually generate coverage. Two campaigns with the same release count and distribution spend can have very different value if one consistently gets picked up by relevant outlets and the other does not.

How the calculation works

The tool adds your distribution and writing cost together to get a cost per release, multiplies that by your release count for total annual spend, and separately multiplies release count by expected pickups per release to estimate total media coverage for the year. Dividing total cost by total pickups gives your real cost per placement.

Using this to set expectations

If cost per pickup looks high, look first at pickup rate rather than assuming the distribution service is overpriced. A release with a genuinely newsworthy angle, timed well and pitched directly to relevant journalists alongside wire distribution, usually earns more pickups than a routine announcement sent through distribution alone, which directly improves this number.

FAQ

Press Release Distribution Cost Calculator: questions, answered

What counts as a media pickup?
A pickup is any outlet, publication, journalist or blog that covers, links to, or republishes your press release content, whether through the wire service's own network or independent journalist interest generated by your pitch.
Should I count syndication on the distribution service's own network as a pickup?
Most distribution services automatically syndicate your release to a network of partner sites, but these placements typically carry far less value than earned coverage from an independent, relevant outlet. Consider tracking the two separately if pickup quality matters more than raw count.
How can I improve my pickups per release?
Direct outreach to specific, relevant journalists with a personalized pitch generally outperforms distribution alone. A newsworthy angle, exclusive data, or timely relevance to current events also meaningfully increases pickup likelihood beyond what paid distribution provides on its own.
Does a lower distribution cost always mean a better deal?
Not necessarily. A cheaper distribution service with a smaller or less relevant network of media contacts can produce fewer pickups, raising your cost per pickup even though the sticker price looks lower. Always compare based on cost per pickup, not just cost per release.
Should this include the value of the resulting backlinks?
This calculator only measures cost per media pickup, not the SEO or backlink value of that coverage. Pair it with a backlink value estimate if you want to weigh press release spend against the ranking benefit of any links earned.
