A permalink is the permanent URL of a page, and the slug is the readable part at the end, after the last slash. This tool turns any title into a slug the way search engines and people both prefer: all lowercase, accented letters folded down to plain ASCII, every space or symbol replaced with a single hyphen, and any leading or trailing hyphens removed. You can strip out common stop words, cap the length at a word boundary, and preview the full URL against your own domain before you publish.

What makes a URL SEO-friendly

Good slugs are short, descriptive and built around the keyword that matters. A reader should be able to guess what the page is about from the URL alone, and so should Google. Keep these rules in mind:

  • Stay short and specific. A handful of meaningful words beats a full sentence. Shorter URLs are easier to read, share and link to.
  • Use hyphens, never underscores. Google treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as joiners, so my_post reads as one word while my-post reads as two.
  • Lowercase only. Some servers treat /Page and /page as different URLs, which splits link signals and can create duplicate content.
  • Drop filler words. Stop words like a, the, of and to rarely add meaning to a slug and only make it longer.
  • Avoid dates and numbers you will regret. Putting 2024 in a slug dates the page and makes future updates awkward.

FAQ

Permalink & Slug Generator: questions, answered

What is a URL slug?
A slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a specific page, usually the text after the last slash. In https://example.com/best-running-shoes the slug is best-running-shoes. A good slug is short, lowercase, hyphenated and describes the page so both readers and search engines understand it at a glance.
Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google has stated it treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as word joiners, so best-running-shoes is read as three words while best_running_shoes can be read as one. Always use hyphens between words in a slug, which is exactly what this generator produces.
Do stop words hurt SEO in URLs?
Stop words like a, the, of and to will not hurt your rankings, but they add length without adding meaning. Removing them gives you a tighter, more keyword-focused slug that is easier to read and share. The remove stop words option here is on by default, and you can switch it off if a slug reads better with them.
Can I change a slug after publishing a page?
Yes, but do it carefully. If the page already has traffic or backlinks, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one so you keep its rankings and do not create broken links. For brand-new pages with no history, you can change the slug freely before anyone links to it.
How long should a URL slug be?
Shorter is generally better. There is no hard limit, but keeping slugs under about 60 characters and to three to five meaningful words keeps them readable and fully visible in search results and when shared. This tool defaults to a 60-character cap and trims at a word boundary so slugs never end mid-word.
