The math behind your link budget

The calculator applies any agency or vendor markup to your average cost per link first, since a quoted per-link price does not always include that fee, then divides your monthly budget by that effective cost to see how many links you can realistically fund. Running the same effective cost against a full year's budget gives a more realistic annual total than simply multiplying the monthly whole-link count by 12, since unspent partial-link budget rolls forward month to month.

A link's price depends heavily on the referring domain's authority, its relevance to your niche, and how the placement is sourced, whether through outreach, guest posting, digital PR or a paid marketplace. Blending very cheap and very expensive placements into a single average cost can hide the fact that a handful of strong, well-targeted links usually outperform a larger number of weak ones.

Turning a link budget into a link building plan

Knowing how many links your budget affords is only the starting point. The bigger question is which pages need links most, what anchor text and referring sites will look natural, and how quickly new links should land to avoid an unnatural spike. A fixed monthly budget works best when it is paired with a prioritized list of target pages rather than spent on whatever placement becomes available first.

FAQ

Link Building Budget Calculator: questions, answered

Why does the calculator apply markup to the cost per link, not the total budget?
Markup is usually charged per placement by an agency or marketplace, so applying it to the cost per link first, then dividing your budget by that higher effective cost, gives a more accurate count of links than applying the markup to the total budget afterward.
What counts as a reasonable average cost per link?
This varies enormously by niche and target domain authority, from under $100 for smaller or newer sites to well over $1,000 for placements on well-established, high-authority publications. Use your own recent quotes or invoices for the most accurate estimate.
Why is the annual estimate not just the monthly count times 12?
Multiplying whole links per month by 12 discards any leftover partial-link budget each month. Calculating the annual link count from the full year's budget divided by the effective cost per link captures that leftover budget instead, giving a slightly higher and more realistic yearly total.
Does a bigger link budget always mean faster rankings?
Not necessarily. Link relevance, referring domain quality and a natural-looking acquisition pace generally matter more than raw volume, so a smaller budget spent on well-targeted placements can outperform a larger budget spent on generic ones.
Does this tool store the budget figures I enter?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser using the numbers currently in the fields. Nothing is saved, uploaded or sent anywhere.
