The formula behind the opportunity score

Four inputs are each converted to a 0 to 100 sub-score, search volume scaled against a 5,000-search ceiling, ease of ranking as 100 minus keyword difficulty, commercial value scaled against a $10 CPC ceiling, and business relevance scaled from a 1 to 5 self-rating, then combined using fixed weights of 30 percent volume, 35 percent ease, 15 percent commercial value and 20 percent relevance.

Why ease of ranking carries the most weight

Ease of ranking gets the largest single weight because a keyword with excellent volume and commercial value is worth little if it takes years of authority-building to rank for it. Relevance is weighted above raw commercial value because a keyword that closely matches what you actually sell will convert the traffic it does bring far better than a tangentially related one with a higher CPC.

What this score cannot account for

The formula treats every keyword independently and has no way to know your current site authority, existing content, or how a keyword fits into a broader topic cluster. Two keywords with an identical score can still have very different real-world priority once you factor in whether you already rank nearby, or whether ranking for one would cannibalize another page you own.

FAQ

Keyword Opportunity Score Calculator: questions, answered

Where do I find keyword difficulty, volume and CPC figures?
Ahrefs, Semrush, Google Keyword Planner or a similar keyword research tool all report these metrics. If you cannot access one, a reasonable estimate based on similar known keywords is better than skipping the input entirely.
Why is there a $10 ceiling on the CPC score?
The commercial value sub-score caps out once CPC reaches $10 so that a small number of unusually expensive keywords do not dominate the entire calculation. Keywords above that threshold all score the maximum 100 on this sub-score.
Can I change how the four factors are weighted?
Not within this tool, the weights (30 percent volume, 35 percent ease, 15 percent commercial value, 20 percent relevance) are fixed so every keyword you check is scored on the same basis and results stay comparable across your list.
Is a low opportunity score a reason to never target that keyword?
Not necessarily. A low score usually means the keyword is either very competitive, low volume, low commercial value or not very relevant to your business, which is useful context for prioritization, not an absolute rule against ever pursuing it.
Does this tool save the keywords or numbers I enter?
No. Every calculation happens in your browser using the numbers currently in the fields. Nothing is saved, uploaded or sent anywhere.
