A Google Shopping product title follows different rules than a page's HTML title tag. It has its own character limit, its own restrictions on promotional language, and its own best practices for what to put first, because it is read by both Google's matching algorithm and a shopper scanning a grid of ad thumbnails. This checker runs a title against those Shopping-specific rules before it goes into a feed.

The Shopping title character limit

Google Merchant Center enforces a hard limit of 150 characters on the title attribute; anything beyond that is truncated. In practice, many Shopping placements, especially on mobile, only display roughly the first 60 to 70 characters before cutting the rest off with an ellipsis, so the details that matter for matching a search, like brand, product type, and the attribute that distinguishes this variant (size, color, material), should sit near the front rather than the end.

Promotional language is not allowed in the title field

Google's Shopping ads policy disallows promotional and time-sensitive text in the title field, things like "free shipping," "% off," "sale," or "best price." That kind of message belongs in the promotion feed, price fields, or the ad's own promotional extensions, not stuffed into the product title, and Merchant Center can disapprove listings that break this rule.

Other formatting rules this checker looks for

All-capital-letter titles, repeated punctuation like multiple exclamation points, and decorative symbols such as stars or checkmarks are also against policy or simply look unprofessional next to properly formatted competitor listings. A clean, attribute-rich title in normal sentence casing consistently performs better in Shopping results than one stuffed with promotional noise.

FAQ

Google Shopping Title Checker: questions, answered

What is the character limit for a Google Shopping product title?
Google Merchant Center enforces a hard limit of 150 characters for the title attribute in your product feed. Text beyond that is truncated, so it will not display or be indexed.
Why does the checker also flag titles over 70 characters?
Even though 150 characters is the hard limit, several Shopping placements, particularly on mobile, only display roughly the first 60 to 70 characters before truncating with an ellipsis. Titles longer than that are still valid, but the most important details should appear earlier in the title.
Why can't I use free shipping or % off in my title?
Google's Shopping ads policy does not allow promotional or time-sensitive language in the title field, since the title is meant to describe the product itself. Shipping offers and discounts belong in dedicated promotion and price fields instead, and including them in the title can get a listing disapproved.
What should a good Shopping title include?
A strong Shopping title generally leads with the brand, then the product type, followed by the attributes that distinguish this specific variant, such as color, size, material or model number, in roughly the order a shopper would search for them.
Is it okay to use all capital letters for emphasis?
No. Google's Shopping policy does not allow titles written entirely in capital letters, aside from standard abbreviations like a brand acronym. Use normal sentence or title casing instead.
Does this tool submit anything to Google Merchant Center?
No. It only checks the text you paste against Google's published Shopping title guidelines, entirely in your browser. It does not connect to Merchant Center, does not access your feed, and does not upload or store anything.
