An email deliverability rate calculator turns your sent and bounced counts into one clear number: what share of your emails actually reached a mail server rather than bouncing back. It is the first health check for any email list, before you even get to opens or clicks.

The deliverability formula

Deliverability rate is delivered emails divided by emails sent, multiplied by 100. Delivered emails are simply sent emails minus bounced emails. Send 10,000 emails with 250 bounces and 9,750 are delivered, a 97.5% deliverability rate. It is a simple ratio, but tracking it consistently over time is what turns it into a useful signal rather than a one-off number.

Hard bounces versus soft bounces

A hard bounce means the address is permanently undeliverable, usually because it does not exist or the domain is invalid, and it should be removed from your list immediately since repeated attempts damage your sending reputation. A soft bounce is temporary, caused by a full inbox or a brief server outage, and a later retry can succeed. Both count against deliverability in the moment, but they call for different follow-up: remove hard bounces, retry or monitor soft bounces.

Why deliverability is not the whole story

A high deliverability rate only confirms the email was accepted by the receiving server, not that it landed in the inbox rather than spam. Inbox placement depends on separate signals: sender reputation, recipient engagement, authentication records like SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and complaint rates. Google's bulk sender guidelines ask senders to keep spam complaint rates below 0.3% in Google Postmaster Tools, a useful second metric to watch alongside deliverability. Getting both right, technical list hygiene and content that earns engagement, is exactly where SEO content optimization and lifecycle marketing overlap.

FAQ

Email Deliverability Rate Calculator: questions, answered

How is email deliverability rate calculated?
Deliverability rate equals the number of emails delivered divided by the number of emails sent, multiplied by 100. Delivered emails are simply emails sent minus emails that bounced. If you send 10,000 emails and 250 bounce, 9,750 are delivered, which is a 97.5% deliverability rate.
What counts as a bounce?
A hard bounce means the email address does not exist or the domain is invalid, and it will never accept mail. A soft bounce is temporary, caused by things like a full inbox or a server that is briefly down. Both should be counted in this calculator's bounced field, since both mean the message was not delivered on that attempt.
What is a healthy deliverability rate?
Most senders with a clean, permission-based list see deliverability rates above 95%. A rate that drops noticeably below that usually points to a stale list with outdated addresses, or a sending reputation problem worth investigating before it gets worse.
Is deliverability the same as inbox placement?
No. Deliverability, as calculated here, only measures whether the email was accepted by the recipient's mail server rather than bouncing. Inbox placement is a separate question of whether an accepted email lands in the inbox or gets filtered to spam, which depends on sender reputation and recipient engagement rather than the bounce rate alone.
How do I improve a low deliverability rate?
Remove addresses that have hard bounced, since sending to them repeatedly damages your sender reputation with every attempt. Use double opt-in for new signups, warm up new sending domains gradually, and clean your list of long-inactive addresses on a regular schedule rather than waiting for bounces to pile up.
Does spam complaint rate affect deliverability?
Yes, indirectly. Complaints do not show up as bounces, so they will not move this calculator's number directly, but a high complaint rate damages sender reputation and can cause mailbox providers to start bouncing or filtering future sends. Google's bulk sender guidelines ask senders to keep spam complaint rates below 0.3% as measured in Google Postmaster Tools, which is a useful benchmark to track alongside bounce rate.
