How we make this list: we compare pricing pages, product documentation and public user reviews. Rankite is independent; if a vendor ever pays for a featured spot, that listing is clearly labeled Partner.

Key takeaways
- Every AI help desk has two bills: per-seat pricing plus per-resolution AI fees ($0.60 to $2 per automated resolution). Model both against real ticket volume.
- The budget shortlist: Freshdesk ($19/agent/month), Help Scout (free to $25/user/month) and Tidio (free to $29/month): all include AI features on entry tiers.
- Intercom's Fin ($0.99 per resolved outcome) and Zendesk's AI agents lead on resolution quality; both get expensive fast at volume.
- Ada and Kustomer are quote-only enterprise platforms with annual contracts; only shortlist them for complex, high-volume operations.
The best AI help desk software
It is 9 a.m. on Monday and the queue holds 400 tickets from the weekend: password resets, "where is my order" messages, and a dozen genuinely hard problems buried in the noise. The AI help desk promise is that software answers the first two categories before a human sees them. The catch is the pricing: nearly every platform now charges twice, once per seat and once per AI resolution. These nine tools are the real market, compared on both bills and on what the AI actually automates.
#1
Zendesk
Best for: Teams of any size wanting a proven, scalable support platform
Visit zendesk.com
Starting price$55/agent/month (Suite Team, billed annually); $69/month billed monthly
Free planFree trial (14 days)
Zendesk is the safe enterprise pick: the most mature suite, the biggest ecosystem, and the most layered bill. Suite tiers run Team $55, Growth $89 ($115 monthly), Professional $115 ($149 monthly) per agent per month on annual billing, with Enterprise custom. AI agents with generative replies ship on every Suite tier, and the integration marketplace covers Slack, Salesforce, Shopify, Jira and a thousand more. Annual billing saves about 20 percent.
Stack the layers before comparing. Seats plus per-resolution AI fees (roughly $1 to $2 each) plus the Copilot add-on (~$50 per agent per month) add up well beyond the headline seat price. A queue resolving 2,000 tickets a month by AI can double the subscription cost. Model against real ticket volume, not the demo numbers. For teams that need proven scale and ecosystem depth, it remains the reference. For cost predictability, the flat-rate tools below are calmer.
What we like- The most mature omnichannel suite with 1,000-plus marketplace integrations
- AI agents included on every Suite tier with generative replies and search
- A 6-month free program for eligible startups
Watch out for- The real AI cost is outcome-based (roughly $1 to $2 per automated resolution) on top of seats, so busy queues get expensive
- The Copilot agent-assist is a separate ~$50/agent/month add-on
Starting price$29/seat/month (Essential, billed annually); $39/month billed monthly
Free planFree trial (14 days, no credit card, unlimited Fin outcomes during trial)
Intercom's Fin is the AI agent everyone else is measured against. Resolution quality leads the category, the messenger-first UX suits in-product support, and Fin can even run standalone on top of Zendesk, Salesforce or HubSpot for teams that like their help desk but want better AI. Seat tiers run Essential $29, Advanced $85 ($99 monthly) and Expert $132 ($139 monthly) per seat on annual billing.
The two-layer bill is the thing to model. Fin costs $0.99 per resolved outcome on all plans, so 1,000 AI resolutions add $990 a month on top of seats. At volume the outcome charges routinely exceed the seat bill (often around two-thirds of the total). Below roughly 1,000 monthly conversations, a flat-rate help desk is usually cheaper. Integrations span 450-plus apps. Buy it for Fin's resolution quality; budget it like a utility, not a subscription.
What we like- Fin is the most deployed support AI agent with strong resolution rates
- A modern messenger-first UX
- Fin also runs standalone on other help desks including Zendesk, Salesforce and HubSpot
Watch out for- Outcome charges routinely exceed the seat bill at volume
- The Copilot agent-assist is a separate $29/agent/month add-on
#3
Freshdesk
Best for: Small to mid-market teams valuing fast setup and low seat cost
Visit freshworks.com
Starting price$19/agent/month (Growth, billed annually); $23/month billed monthly
Free planFree (6-month free program for up to 2 agents); 14-day free trial
Freshdesk is the price disruptor: $19 a seat with AI included. Growth at $19 per agent per month ($23 monthly), Pro $55 ($66), Enterprise $89 ($107), with the Omni versions (adding chat, messaging and phone) at $29, $79 and $119. Freddy AI Agent ships on every paid plan, setup takes hours, and the 14-day trial plus a 6-month free program for tiny teams make evaluation cheap. Integrations cover Slack, Shopify, Salesforce, Jira and 1,000-plus apps.
The session metering is the catch. The 500 included AI Agent sessions are a one-time allowance; after that it is $49 per 100 sessions, so a busy month turns the bill usage-driven fast. Pilot Freddy free, then model the session math against real volume before committing the team. Copilot agent-assist needs Pro or Enterprise. For small to mid-market teams that want low seat cost with real AI access, the entry price is unmatched.
What we like- The lowest entry price of any serious help desk
- Fast setup with multichannel ticketing live in hours
- The Freddy AI Agent available on every paid plan
Watch out for- The Copilot agent-assist is Pro and Enterprise-only at $29/agent/month
- The 500 included AI Agent sessions are a one-time allowance, then $49 per 100 sessions
Starting price$0 (Free plan, up to 2 users); Starter $20/seat/month
Free planYes (free plan); 14-day trial of the Customer Agent on Pro+
HubSpot Service Hub makes sense for exactly one buyer: the team already on HubSpot. Tickets arrive with the full contact record, deals and history attached, which no standalone help desk can match. The free tier (up to 2 users) is genuinely usable, Starter is $20 per seat per month, and Professional and Enterprise climb from there with onboarding fees attached. The rule-based chatbot is free; the AI Customer Agent needs Professional or above.
Watch the credit math. The Breeze Customer Agent runs on credits (Pro's 3,000 credits cover roughly 60 resolutions a month), and extra resolutions cost around $0.45 to $0.50 each with auto top-up on by default. Cap it deliberately. Integrations are native across the HubSpot ecosystem plus Slack, Jira, Aircall and 1,500-plus apps. If the CRM is HubSpot, this is the path of least resistance. If it is not, the context advantage disappears and cheaper standalone tools win.
What we like- Support lives inside the CRM, so tickets carry full customer context
- The free tier is genuinely usable for tiny teams
- Breeze AI is woven across the whole HubSpot platform
Watch out for- The Breeze Customer Agent runs on credits, so real volume means buying more
- Onboarding fees ($1,500 Pro, $3,500 Enterprise) and annual commitments on higher tiers
#5
Tidio
Best for: Small ecommerce stores and SMBs that live on chat
Visit tidio.com
Starting price$0 (Free, 50 conversations/month); Starter $29/month ($24.17 billed annually)
Free planYes (free plan); 7-day free trial, no credit card
Tidio prices by conversation, not by seat. Ten seats are included on the Free, Starter and Growth plans, which suits small teams where everyone answers chat. Starter is $29 a month ($24.17 billed annually) for 100 conversations, Growth from $59 ($49.17) for 250-plus, and Plus from $300 plus usage. The Lyro AI agent is billed separately from $39 a month for 50 AI conversations. Integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce, WordPress, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp are excellent.
The meter math needs a spreadsheet. A realistic Growth setup (base $59 plus Lyro $39 plus Flows $29) lands near $127 a month, and the 10-agent cap on lower tiers forces an upgrade as the team grows. Annual billing saves two months. Support is chat and email. For small ecommerce stores where chat is the support channel, the per-conversation model with generous seats is the right shape; for large teams, per-seat tools scale more predictably.
What we like- Priced per conversation rather than per seat, with 10 seats included on Free, Starter and Growth
- The Lyro AI agent handles a reported 60-70% of repetitive questions
- Superb Shopify and WooCommerce integrations
Watch out for- Three separate meters (conversations, Lyro AI, Flows) make the real bill hard to predict
- The 10-agent limit on lower tiers creates a scaling trap
#6
Ada
Best for: Global enterprises with complex, high-volume support operations
Visit ada.cx
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo (demo via sales)
Ada is the enterprise AI platform, not a help desk with a chatbot. It handles multi-step customer journeys autonomously in 30-plus languages, with resolution rates among the highest reported in the industry. Global enterprises with complex support operations are the entire addressable market. Integrations cover Salesforce, Zendesk, Shopify and the major CRMs.
Nothing about the commercial model suits small teams. Buyer-reported figures put resolutions at $1 to $3.50 each, with entry contracts around $30,000 a year and medians near $70,000. Implementation takes months with dedicated conversation designers. Expect a platform fee plus usage, negotiated annually. Shortlist it when support is a strategic operation at global scale; it is not SMB software and does not pretend to be.
What we like- Among the highest autonomous resolution rates reported (70-83%)
- Omnichannel AI across chat, voice and email with strong multilingual support
- Proven at massive enterprise scale
Watch out for- Enterprise-only economics with six-figure contracts common
- Implementation takes months and typically needs dedicated conversation designers
Starting price$0 (Free, up to 5 users, 100 contacts/month)
Free planYes (free plan); 15-day free trial; 3-month free trial of AI Answers
Help Scout is the human one: an email-first shared inbox with AI priced to match. The free tier (5 users, 100 contacts a month) is a real production option for tiny teams, and paid tiers run Standard $25, Plus $45 and Pro $75 per user per month on annual billing. AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution, among the cheapest rates on this list, with a 3-month free trial of the AI. The shared inbox plus Docs knowledge base is fast to adopt.
The Pro floor is the thing to know: a 10-user minimum puts Pro at $750 a month minimum, and SSO, SAML and HIPAA only exist there. Per-user pricing scales with headcount, and extra inboxes cost more. Integrations include Salesforce, HubSpot, Jira, Slack and 100-plus apps. For email-first teams that want AI without the enterprise bill, the value is excellent up to the Plus tier.
What we like- A real free production tier for tiny teams
- A human, email-first shared inbox that customers love
- AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution is among the cheapest per-resolution rates
Watch out for- Pro requires a 10-user minimum ($750/month floor)
- SSO, SAML and HIPAA only on Pro, and inboxes beyond plan limits cost extra
#8
Gorgias
Best for: Ecommerce brands on Shopify, BigCommerce and Magento
Visit gorgias.com
Starting price$10/month (Starter, monthly only, 50 tickets, 3 users)
Free planFree trial (7 days)
Gorgias is the ecommerce specialist, priced by ticket volume. Starter is $10 a month for 50 tickets and 3 users; Basic $60 ($50 annual) for 300 tickets; Pro $360 ($300) for 2,000; Advanced $900 ($750) for 5,000; Enterprise custom. Agents see orders inside every ticket and can refund or edit without leaving it, and the 150-plus app integrations cover Shopify, Klaviyo, Loop and Recharge. Seasonal teams cost nothing extra since pricing follows tickets, not seats.
The double billing is the catch. Each AI-resolved conversation incurs both the helpdesk ticket cost and the AI automation fee (~$0.85 to $1.00), and overage tickets at $0.36 to $0.40 each punish spiky months. Buy the tier that fits the normal month, not the quietest, and model the AI double-charge against real automation rates. Annual billing saves up to 16 percent. For Shopify brands, the revenue-aware support is unmatched.
What we like- Priced by ticket volume rather than per seat, so large seasonal teams cost nothing extra
- The deepest Shopify and ecommerce integrations in the category, with order data inside every ticket
- The AI Agent included as an add-on on every plan
Watch out for- Each AI-resolved conversation is billed twice (helpdesk ticket plus AI automation fee)
- Overage tickets at $0.36 to $0.40 each punish spiky months
#9
Kustomer
Best for: Mid-market to enterprise teams wanting CRM depth at the center of support
Visit kustomer.com
Starting priceSee website (custom quote)
Free planNo (demo via sales)
Kustomer puts the CRM at the center of support. Instead of siloed tickets, every interaction, order and event lands on a unified customer timeline, with intelligent routing built into the platform. Omnichannel coverage spans email, chat, SMS, social and voice. For mid-market to enterprise teams that think in customer relationships rather than ticket queues, the data model is the differentiator.
The buying process is enterprise throughout. No public pricing (third-party reports cite Enterprise $89 and Ultimate $139 per user per month, billed annually, with an 8-seat minimum), annual-only contracts, and metered AI add-ons on top (AI Agents around $0.60 per engaged conversation, AI for Reps around $40 per user per month). Implementation takes weeks. Integrations include Shopify, Salesforce, Stripe, Slack and 100-plus apps. Buy it for the CRM depth; skip it when the team is small enough for a flat-rate tool.
What we like- A CRM-first data model with a unified customer timeline instead of siloed tickets
- Strong omnichannel coverage across email, chat, SMS, social and voice
- Intelligent routing built into the platform
Watch out for- No public pricing and an 8-seat annual minimum prices out small teams
- Implementation is a weeks-long project with a complex data model
How we chose
We started with the searches buyers actually run: AI help desk software, best AI help desk software and AI customer support platform. For each candidate we opened the vendor's own pricing page, checked plan names and prices against public reviews on G2 and Capterra and practitioner discussion on Reddit, and compared AI automation depth, pricing models and team-size fit. Where the vendor publishes no prices we wrote "See website" rather than repeating estimates as facts. The shortlist mixes per-seat, per-conversation and per-ticket tools with the quote-only enterprise platforms, because a five-person shop and a global support org are not buying the same product.
Frequently asked questions
How much does AI help desk software cost per month?
Entry seats run $10 to $55 a month: Gorgias Starter ($10), Freshdesk Growth ($19), Help Scout Standard ($25), Tidio Starter ($29), Intercom Essential ($29), Zendesk Suite Team ($55). AI resolutions add $0.60 to $2 each on top. A team resolving 1,000 tickets a month by AI should budget $600 to $2,000 in AI fees above the seat bill. Enterprise platforms (Ada, Kustomer) are quote-only.
What is per-resolution pricing?
Instead of (or in addition to) per-seat pricing, the vendor charges per ticket the AI resolves without a human: Intercom Fin $0.99, Help Scout AI Answers $0.75, Zendesk roughly $1 to $2, Gorgias $0.85 to $1.00. It aligns cost with automation value but makes bills volatile. Cap it, monitor it monthly, and compare the per-resolution rate before committing.
Zendesk or Intercom for a growing SaaS team?
Choose Intercom if in-product chat is the primary channel and Fin's resolution quality justifies $0.99 per outcome. Choose Zendesk if the operation spans email, voice and social with an enterprise integration ecosystem. Both get expensive at volume through outcome fees. Freshdesk or Help Scout cost far less for teams that do not need best-in-class AI.
Do I need a separate AI agent, or is built-in AI enough?
Built-in AI (Zendesk AI agents, Freddy, Breeze, Lyro) covers deflection, summaries and agent assist for most teams. Separate platforms (Ada) or standalone agents (Fin on Zendesk) make sense at high volume or complexity, where resolution rates directly move staffing costs. Start built-in, measure the deflection rate, and buy dedicated AI when the math justifies it.
What is the cheapest AI help desk for a small team?
Help Scout's free tier (5 users), Tidio's free plan (50 conversations) and HubSpot's free tier (2 users) cost nothing to start. On paid plans, Freshdesk Growth ($19/agent/month) with Freddy AI included is the cheapest serious option, and Gorgias Starter ($10/month) suits tiny ecommerce shops. All include real AI features, not demos.
Per-seat vs. per-resolution: the two bills inside every AI help desk
Nearly every platform on this list charges twice. The seat bill covers humans: $19 to $132 per agent or seat per month depending on the vendor and tier. The AI bill covers automation: $0.60 to $2 per resolved conversation, metered monthly. Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk, Help Scout, Gorgias and Kustomer all run this dual model in some form; only the rates and the metering differ.
Do the combined math before buying. A 5-agent team on Zendesk Suite Team pays $275 a month in seats; resolving 1,500 tickets by AI adds roughly $1,500 to $3,000. The same team on Freshdesk Growth pays $95 in seats with Freddy sessions metered separately. The vendor whose seat price looked higher can easily be cheaper all-in, and vice versa. Ask for the per-resolution rate, the included allowance, and what happens at 2x volume, in writing.
The credit trap: how AI agent pricing really works
AI pricing hides behind three different meters. Per-resolution (Intercom $0.99, Help Scout $0.75) is the most honest: one price per automated outcome. Credits (HubSpot's Breeze credits, Workable-style AI credits) obscure the unit economics until you convert them. Session allowances (Freshdesk's one-time 500 sessions, then $49 per 100) look generous until the allowance runs out mid-quarter.
Three defenses. First, convert everything to cost per 1,000 resolutions before comparing. Second, check the defaults: auto top-up and overage billing are usually on, and spiky months get punished (Gorgias overages at $0.36 to $0.40 a ticket). Third, trial the AI on real tickets, not the demo set: resolution rates in production decide whether the per-resolution math works. The cheapest AI is the one that actually resolves the ticket.
