Home / SEO Foundations: Learn SEO Free in 7 Lessons

SEO Foundations is a free course that teaches you SEO from zero in seven lessons, about 2 hours total. You will learn how search engines rank pages, how to target keywords, how internal links and backlinks work, and how to run a full 40-point audit on your own site. No signup, no paywall.

This is the same foundation we train new Rankite team members on. It is built for founders, marketers who just inherited SEO, and anyone tired of paying for advice they cannot evaluate. Read the lessons in order; each one assumes the last.

Curriculum

  1. What is SEO? You will learn how Google crawls, indexes, and ranks pages, and why rankings come down to relevance and trust.
  2. How many keywords should one page target? You will learn keyword targeting: one primary keyword per page, close variants, and why stuffing backfires.
  3. How many internal links per page? You will learn how internal links pass authority between your pages and how to structure them deliberately.
  4. The 40-point SEO audit checklist You will learn to diagnose any site end to end, the same checklist we run on every new client.
  5. Do nofollow links help SEO? You will learn how backlinks actually work, what dofollow and nofollow mean, and which links move rankings.
  6. Should you outsource link building? You will learn how to scale link acquisition safely and spot the vendors who will get you penalized.
  7. What should SEO cost? You will learn what fair SEO pricing looks like, so you can budget for it or buy it without getting burned.

After the course

After these seven lessons you can audit a website, fix the issues in priority order, target keywords correctly, and evaluate any SEO proposal that lands in your inbox. That last skill alone pays for the 2 hours. These fundamentals are exactly what produced real client outcomes for us: when we applied them for Zluri, organic traffic grew 45%, and Swordfish AI grew revenue 400% from organic search. Nothing in this course is filler; if a lesson did not change client results, it did not make the curriculum.

How long does it take to learn SEO?

You can read the foundations in an afternoon, but seeing them move rankings takes longer. Google's own Maile Ohye put the timeline plainly in an official Search Central video: in most cases, SEO takes four months to a year to show real results. The reading is fast. The patience is the hard part.

That gap is why so many beginners quit early. Ahrefs studied billions of pages and found that only 5.7% of newly published pages reach Google's top 10 within a year, and most that do already sit on authoritative sites. The takeaway is not that SEO is hopeless. It is that the work compounds, so the sites that keep publishing and fixing issues are the ones still standing when the rankings finally arrive.

Treat this course as the map, not the finish line. Read a lesson, apply it to one page, measure what changes, then move on. A single page audited and fixed properly will teach you more than ten lessons skimmed.

What each lesson unlocks

Every lesson ends with something you can do, not just something you know. Here is the skill each one leaves you with and a free tool that makes it practical.

Why learn SEO yourself

Even if you plan to hire help, the foundations pay off. BrightEdge reports that organic search still drives about 53% of all website traffic, so for most businesses SEO is the single largest channel they have, and you cannot manage what you cannot evaluate. Knowing the basics is exactly what lets you tell a real strategy from a dashboard with a sales team attached.

The reward is concentrated at the top. Backlinko's analysis of Google click-through data found the number-one organic result earns roughly 27.6% of all clicks, while pages further down get a fraction of that. Ahrefs put numbers on the other end of the curve: about 96% of pages get zero organic search traffic at all. The foundations in this course are what move a page from the second group toward the first.

Common beginner mistakes this course prevents

Most early SEO effort goes to the wrong things. These are the mistakes the seven lessons are built to stop before they cost you months.

  • Chasing keywords nobody searches. Lesson two teaches you to confirm real demand before you write.
  • Cramming every keyword onto one page. One page, one primary keyword, plus close variants. Stuffing reads badly and ranks worse.
  • Leaving pages orphaned. Internal links pass authority, and a page nothing links to is a page Google undervalues.
  • Buying cheap backlinks. The wrong links are a liability, not a shortcut, and lesson six shows you how to spot the vendors who sell them.
  • Skipping the audit. Guessing at fixes wastes time. The 40-point checklist tells you what to fix first.
  • Expecting results in a week. Set the four-month-to-a-year expectation up front and you will stick with it long enough to win.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any tools or experience to start? No. Every lesson works with free tools and a website you can edit. If you can publish a page and change a title, you can apply the whole course. Total beginners should simply start at lesson one and not skip ahead.

How long does the course take? About 2 hours of reading, spread however you like. Applying each lesson to your own site takes longer, and that is the point: a lesson per week with real implementation beats reading everything in one sitting.

Is this course really free? Yes. All seven lessons are free to read with no signup and no paywall, and every tool we recommend has a usable free tier. We publish it because an informed client is easier to work with, not as a lead magnet that hides the useful part behind a form.

Can I learn SEO without a technical background? Yes. SEO rewards clear thinking and consistent habits more than code. If you can publish a page, edit a title, and read a chart in Search Console, you can apply every lesson here. The few technical topics that come up, like sitemaps and redirects, are explained in plain language.

Will SEO still matter with AI search? Yes, and arguably more. The same foundations that rank a page, clear structure, authority, and trust, are what AI answer engines use to decide which sources to cite. Learning SEO well is now the entry point to answer engine optimization as well.
